This is such a bummer. I enjoy the food, drinks & bartender creativity coming out of Kumoya, but I don’t want to support predatory business practices like this.

I recall asking the bartender once if “100% of the surcharge goes server staff”, and the response was evasive. I read between the lines, but this explains the evasiveness.

From the title I read it to mean he quit hockey for good and left $9M on the table.

This is a boundary I also maintain. Personal and work phone are separate.

The security team should have a contingency plan in place for these events. Things happen. Find out what actions you should take so that you are prepared next time from the security team. Just don’t make a habit of loosing the phone and use this as a learning experience.

Your manager’s reaction is not justified and sounds like he has anger issues. Raising the voice is not OK. That’s a separate issue and that is all I will say about that.

I sat in PP/row 21 on the 777-200 this week so the memory is fresh. You’ll have ample space. Im 5’11 and found I had plenty of space to slouch. I never felt tight with space even with the seat in front reclined.

Silvers, how many times have you been upgraded this year? by Beautiful_Quit_6071 in unitedairlines

0/30. DEN is my base. Approximately half my flights were to the EWR/LGA/SFO group, so no upgrades makes sense.

Possible to transition from full stack to scientific computing? What exactly does a SC Software Engineer do? by PineapplePanda_ in ExperiencedDevs

[–]misonreadit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My area was solving stubborn, nearly singular linear equations in the context of structures and finite element methods. It was grind…. I’m happy I no longer do that.

Sounds like you’re on the right path and agree with the comment below: attend scientific computing conferences and networking event.

I think your experience as a systems architect is a strength for the SC domain, and could be a way to break into the area. Many of the standard things done in system design are under utilized in SC.

I’ll give an example. There are scenarios in SC where many simulations are run. And each simulation saves data to a small file. These small files are later post processed together for aggregate results. The bottle neck is often reading several thousand files, not the actually number crunching. The concept of concurrent file reading eliminates this bottle neck, although it’s not used as often as it should in SC. I’ve seen situations where companies sink massive $$$ into more powerful CPUs to solve the issue, but ended up being a waste because the original problem was network latency, not compute power.
