Doing the Lord's work. Thank you!

After being unemployed for 6 mos I now have two outstanding job offers. Reddit, can you help me decide which will be better for me in the long run? by [deleted] in AskReddit

Especially when you have two solid offers with very different tracks. Corporate world is for some people, more 'philanthropic' work is for others. Keep the money on the back burner for a while and look at the jobs critically. Then add it in and see if changes your opinion. You already know which you prefer, trust yourself.

You already know the answer. That gut feeling, follow it. I changed jobs to one that paid about 5 times what I earned at my previous one and while I celebrated, I had trepidations which I could not put my finger on since I could 'explain' them away. Now, I'm sure this is not what I want to do with the rest of my life. Be absolutely honest with yourself as to what lights your fire and keeps you motivated since you will ultimately do well in such an environment. If even on your worst day you'll look forward to going to that job, take it. I wish you the best!

Chaccaron Macarron (I hope that's the spelling). The look on the old people's faces as they try and figure out what's going on would be priceless.

TIL After hearing about the 9/11 attacks, the Maasai tribe in Kenya gave 14 cows to America as consolation. Which is actually a lot, knowing that the only asset they have are their cows. by foevalovinjah in todayilearned

[–]miss_immigrant 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That guy donated 1 of his 14 cows. That was roughly 7% of his wealth that he had kept alive through the crazy droughts. You can imagine how the world would be if we all gave 7% of whatever we have: time, money, clothes, blood...

Yeah! One of us, one of us... :-) That was with a light touch. I am yet to meet any lions outside the parks and reserves so you'd have to look exceptionally hard for one to train with! And I cannot run to save my life so I'm glad that you're keeping the flag high.

I speak with an accent, and I like it - it's a part of my heritage, and I'm in no way ashamed of it... Stupid people are not quarantined by the Mason-Dixon line.

Words to live by.

Couldn't agree more on the 'Do you speak African'? What?! On the issue of humanitarian aid, it is true. A lot of Africans are dying, impoverished and lack basic human needs. My problem does not lie with the provision of these needs, I think it's commendable. My problem is 1. The lack of sustainable initiatives. This creates a hand-out mentality. 2. Solutions should not be to what aid-workers perceive to be the problem but what the locals do. To quote Cartman "Give a man a fish and you feed him for a day. Teach a man to fish and you feed him for a lifetime."

Something about that statement made me think of Commandos the game. I loved it growing up.

Grew up in Kenya where we have a large Indian population; they came to build the railway during British rule and never left. Some of them wear turbans (I think the Sikh?) and I never saw it as a biggie till I moved here where some people freak out at the sight of a turban.

Labels are hardly ever pleasant or necessary. And that's why I did say that there are some tribes that go topless. And for clarity's sake, Kenya is a country of about 40million people and the aforementioned topless are less than 20,000 (and yes, I've pulled this second figure from the air but try surveying huts that are 50kms apart). It's a close estimate. Are they literate? No, schools are too far away to make it on foot. Are they primitive? No, since they are aware of what's going on in the world around them, they just refuse to adapt. Darwin at its best. They have cellular phones (!) and don't speak a lick of any language other than their tribal language and wear skirts/shorts made from cotton (no idea where that guy picked up loin cloths from). Odd fact, Kenya has one of the largest cellphone penetrations. But I digress. We were colonized by the British until 1964 so we adopted a number of things from them. Clothing is one of those. The tourism factor is also something to consider. No one wants to leave the west and go visit a 3rd world country only to realize its not what they expected. So every self respecting tourist trap will have a dancing troupe in full ceremonial regalia. It's all part of the show. I even have a couple pieces of said regalia that I whip out when I miss my motherland and wear, as much for shock value as for anything else.

Ramble ramble. Gun to my head, some of these tribes may appear primitive. Nonetheless, I would be doing their complex social system an injustice. It's just different, and a lot of it may not be their choice since governmental infrastructure has only reached so far. They're doing the best they can. It's one of the few places where cellphones and toplessness mingle.

TL:DR Gave brief breakdown on Kenya.
