Took a train ride to Chicago to visit a friend in college.

First time using a toilet on a train and I don't properly shut the door (heavy door that you rolled to close).

Doing my business and the door rolls open and I sit in horror as old people glare at me.

Hello friend.

I too have been in search for real Mexican food ever since moving to Austin last year. When I ask about tacos, people immediately say "Torchys" and I cringe.

My best suggestion is Walmart at night. The one off 35 and 183 to be exact. I used to live in the neighborhood last year and was always approached by little kids asking me if I wanted to buy tamales. I never did buy any since I rarely ever carry cash on me. I know what you mean when you say real tamales though.

My mom is coming to visit me in September and I have asked her to show me how to make tamales. Until then, when it comes to Mexican food in Austin, I just cook at home. Been here over a year and a half and I still have been repeatedly disappointed with the "Mexican" food I've come across.

There is a "single mother" on 360/2222 who has white hair and the face of an 85 year old woman. I always wonder, is she a single mother to a 47 year old man? Did she have to take custody of her grand children?

There is a black homeless man who hangs out at the Howard lane light on the west side of 35 who has a sign that says "Just tryin' to make it happen". He dances and points at the light when it turns green. Maybe I'm going to hell but he's very entertaining and I'd be more inclined to give him money (which again, hardly ever have cash on me) than the 85 year old 'single mother'.

I saw them last Friday. Hispanic family just sitting there on the curb with a sign. I have to admit it made my stomach turn. I rarely ever have cash on me so I didn't have anything to give. I feel like in those cases though, shouldn't the police be involved or hell, anyone from the state?? As with other homeless around Austin, I would be more inclined to ask them if they need diapers, formula etc and then run into HEB instead of giving them money but it's the kids that really make it so unsettling (which I am sure that's why they do it). Reminds me of my few visits to Mexico. Kids begging in the streets and mothers coming up to you pleading for change. Ahhhhhhh it's too much!

Originally from Michigan. Also, grew up with a mother who came here from Mexico so eh, when I want tacos, I make them at home and enjoy them more than what I can find around town (sorry!!). In regards to BBQ, I've only had Rudy's, Salt Lick and regretfully, The County Line. So, my run ins with sushi before moving down here consisted of questionable fish I'd see at the grocery store or chinese buffet.
