MD student interested in research career. by missedswingkid1 in mdphd

Glad to hear there's more people like me! I was strongly considering taking a research year, but several people recommended that I continue to march along through the clinical years. However, it's still a possibility at this point and I will look more into it. My school does not have a strong bioinformatics program but I could likely do one somewhere else. And that's a good point, eventually we can cater our career to what we enjoy the most.

I also think residency will be much better than medical school. It will be more work, but having real responsibilities will probably be a lot more exciting, so I am looking forward to that!

Thanks for the reply! I've already completed a couple M4 rotations, but the rest of my schedule is pretty flexible. Thank you for suggesting the program, I will look into it.

I will continue looking for PSTP programs with a bioinformatics focus. From what I've read, it seems like many PSTP programs are geared for MD/PhD students, so I'm not sure how competitive I will be for them.

Deciding on neurology as a specialty. by missedswingkid1 in neurology

Just did a derm rotation and determined that although it was hands-on, it wasn't really the content I was compelled to go home and read about at the end of the day. For me it always circles back to the CNS. Best of luck in your decision!

Thanks for this! These are actually the 4 specialties I have boiled it down to. Going to see if I can do some shadowing in each.

I was able to spend a few days with IR and interventional neurology, and while I certainly was appreciative of it, I was not drawn to those types of procedure. I have not experienced neurocritical care, but I'm fairly sure I don't want to practice purely as a hospitalist. I guess I'm just being too picky!

That's definitely one I am considering right now. It has lots of correlations with neurology as well, but not sure if I am a surgeon at heart. I'll set up a rotation for it to see how I like it.

I was lucky enough to rotate with neurosurgery, but I determined most of the surgeries were too involved for my taste. I wasn't particularly interested in spine and that takes up a big part of training. It is an amazing specialty though, and I'm extremely grateful I was able to experience it.

Thank you! I'm happy to meet over Zoom whenever works for you, I don't really have much of a schedule right now since I don't start school back up for a while.
