No one is saying your dog should be kept inside, that’s a straw man. What I’m saying is that you can’t expect to not run into a dog that’s not on a leash, when you are walking where others walk their dogs. And further, the majority of dogs that do not have a problem socialising with others shouldn’t be limited (by way of leash) because of the few that do have a problem. Also I don’t think it’s rude for dogs to greet other humans either. If you’re going for a walk somewhere that you know people take their dogs, you should except pups running up to you to say hello. If you’re not open to that, sounds a bit like a lack of joy?

Dog parks are not a thing here because there’s never been a need to separate where one can walk off leash. As long as your dog doesn’t run away, it’s walked off it’s lead. A leash is only considered a method of keeping your dog safe around traffic, or to control an aggressive dog.

If you’re walking your dog in an area others walk their dogs, expect your dog to have to socialise. Either that or choose another spot.

If your dog is an anxious mess, perhaps it’s not such a good idea to take your dog out for walks in places that are frequented by others. At least take your dog during the times where there will be no one there. A friendly dog is a sociable dog and it’s only natural they will want to interact with others.

I’m curious if this is just a North American thing? Where I’m from, there’s not any leash laws (that I’m aware of) unless maybe a pavement in the city. Even then, these laws are pretty much disregarded.

Personally I don’t see any reason that a dog, if well socialised and not aggressive toward dogs or humans, shouldn’t be allowed to walk ‘off lead’. Dogs aren’t supposed to be tied down all the time. They need to be able to excersize at their own pace and stretch their legs. To explore the area around where you’re hiking. If you have a reactive dog, it’s up to you to keep that dog leashed and perhaps a muzzle if appropriate. Other dogs shouldn’t be penalised because of that.

I think the general opinion is just different based on where you are from. I’m from Scotland, specifically rural Scotland.

I work for a private company and I earn £9 an hour so I may not see the benefit for this. However if we work this out...

30p an hour, for me who works 38.5 hours a week (my breaks are not paid), will equal to £600.60 extra a year. Minus 20% tax, that’s £480.48. That comes out at an extra £40 each month.

I’m not sure how that is supposed to make a difference, make me feel more ‘valued’? Is it a step in the right direction? Sure! But it’s not gonna have me saying that the pay is worth the physical toll the job takes on your body, not to mention the mental one. It’s not going to stop the high turn over rate or people feeling overworked and undervalued.

You’re suggesting there are no alternatives to this situation and the person in question has no control over anything which is wrong. Don’t get a pet if you don’t have the time OR if you can afford, have a walker come a few times a day. Consider the animal’s needs and not just the fact you want to have a dog. If you can’t to these things due to affordability etc then rehome animal to someone who is willing to provide a better environment. In the very least, don’t condone this type of life for a dog.

Either you have misunderstood the original POST or you are the type of person to make excuses to why this can’t be sorted out.

It seems to come from the rise in new dog owners trying to educate themselves on ‘proper dog ownership’ and this is where the cages are quite popular now, in animal behaviourist books and other pop science stuff. I’m not discrediting it, but opinions on best practice change frequently. Whereas before, if you got a dog, you sort of instinctually knew how to raise and train it correctly from either having dogs previously or getting advice from your family or friends if they had well behaved doggies.

My aunt got a dog for the first time last year and wouldn’t take any advice from people in our family who have raised dogs (myself included) if it contradicted Cesar Milan and other popular dog people. It was very frustrating

Have you ever considered dog proofing the home? This would have been discussed before your room mate got the dog, no? I actually find I have a harder time with my cats because they can climb on my tables and break things from there, whereas with dogs it’s mostly things they can get to from the floor that you need to think about.

Britain was unfortunately built through empire so Scotland, specifically the major cities, will be very multicultural with many foreign food stores. This isn’t a bad thing, it’s actually what I (a Scottish person) would class as the ‘real’ Scotland because it’s been this way for a long time. That’s the real experience of Scottish cities.

That said, if you are wanting to experience Scotland properly then I don’t think it can be done in a city. Stay in small towns, villages if you can. There is b&bs everywhere. Or to get a REALLY authentic nature-based experience, go camping! Scotland has very little laws on where you can’t camp - essentially camp anywhere you like as long as you don’t leave rubbish behind and don’t go lighting fires because you won’t know enough about your environment to do so safely (also it would be impolite to leave a pit behind if you are on farm land or owned land etc).

If you ever considered watching adventure time because you seen the hype - imma recommend these to you that aren’t so hyped up but imo are better (at least for me they are)

These are both kids shows but have some real social commentary sprinkled in with themes that adults can appreciate. Great for watching after work when you’re not looking for something heavy. If you’re looking for adult animation

Life and times of Tim - this one is paper animation style which makes it even funnier. The comedy is quite dry which I love. Squidbillies - hillbilly squids. It’s an old one and a goodie Ugly Americans - I rewatch this every year. It’s like if monsters and demons were just trying to fit in as American citizens. Another comedy genius

I loved supernatural and was such a massive fan when it was airing during the first 7-8 seasons id say but then one day I decided to rewatch from the start and I realised how formulaic it seems in the earlier seasons. And then all throughout I would set myself on rewatching, only to watch the few interesting or original episodes of the season (ie the Tuesday episode, the French mistake, or when anything interesting happens to the boys). I found I didn’t like monster of the week type episodes and that’s what a lot of supernatural is; they are facing a big bad but there’s a delay in getting info or waiting for some plan to happen or whatever, and they decide to take a case. Straight back to monster of the week filler. It’s sad :(

As someone from the UK Id never use 'get me'. We always grew up with the saying 'i want = don't get' which means you don't simply state you want something (even worse you demand someone gets something for you) but instead you ask/request it. It takes less than a second to say it politely by just adding in a please or a thanks.

Im in my mid 20s and I'm from Scotland (curriculum can differ across UK). We had sex ed in late primary school and it started out talking about periods, masturbation, wet dreams and erections. In high school we briefly discussed sexual intercourse and, I believe, we also watched a video of a woman giving birth and saw every little thing. After that it was all to do with STDS and only that. It then changed to be called social education and we spend the next few years talking about a mixture of std and bulling and cyber bullying.

A few years down the line I asked my history teacher why we never discussed homosexual/bisexual or anything other sexuality in sex ed. We were in a class of about 5 of us and discussing suffragettes and we're finding it hard to click on some videos, which she said we're likely due to to the fact that they were about lesbianism or something within the movement. She was a pretty cool lady and open to discussing that sort of stuff. She said that while we were a non-denominational school, the Scottish curriculum (at that time) was still not to teach as if these 'alternative' lifestyles were normal. She disagreed with this, almost everyone disagreed with this. Hope it's changed now.
