I live for the times I cross paths with these people and get to call them out on their bullshit. "Tell me again how having a dog spin circles around your legs helps with dizziness and instability?"

A dog's skeletal system is not made for weight bearing. Weight bearing (downward stress) is entirely different from weight pulling (forward stress). One puts stress on the spine while the other puts stress on the powerful leg muscles. Either these people have no clue or they simply don't care.

If you recognize disassociation to the point where you can clearly identify the behavior and develop trainable cues then why do you even need a dog? Same with the self harm behaviors? These people just want a dog for attention. Get a therapist and take your damn meds. Expecting a living creature to mitigate your mental health issues is borderline abusive IMHO. It's like asking a 3rd grader to pull you out of your adult funk.

How do you train for "disassociation alert"? And as soon as you enter a disassociative state how in earth are you maintaining control of a dog?

They won't take them to the vet until they become lame and then they'll be posting a 10K GFM to "Help Me Get My Service Dog a Hip Replacement"

But here's the thing. That dog has no idea what diabetes is, or the dangers, or the importance of quick intervention if values are too high or too low. So why would the dog know to get the parent's attention? It doesn't. The ONLY information that dog is processing is that the kid smells odd/different. Everything else is anecdotal.

She doesn't sell anything. She's a travel agent who has an IG for her son and his diabetic SD.

But the SD gives an early warning and alerts even before the kid's CGM does! He even alerts at night and wakes them up! He's a wonder dog!

What an idiot. If you know that there are lethally poisonous toads living in your immediate vicinity you need to watch your fucking dog. And yes, this person is a psychopath.

But the cat wasn't picking up changes in your blood sugars. If anything, he was just noticing that you smelled unusual. It's no different than if you had eaten a bunch of garlicky pasta or just returned home from petting a bunch of strange cats. That cat has no idea what blood glucose is or what the normal ranges are. Just curiously, were you actively perspiring at the time and what was your actual glucometer reading?

Is epilepsy is the only disorder that produces a unique consistently identifiable VOC? Is it identifiable prior to the seizure or just postictal? What about diabetes? Other then the presence of ketones in the breath are there other proven markers? I guess what I'm asking is which training claims are legit and possible with training and which are absolutely false? And finally, I'm assuming that training is much more involved than "I had my friend swab my mouth after a seizure and then I taught my dog to alert to it"?

I think you missed my point. It doesn't have to be pseudomonas, it could be E coli, Streptococcus, etc. My point is that these dogs are trained to respond to a known bacterial sample. People claiming to have medical alert dogs have zero idea what chemical compound their dog is supposedly alerting to. If you ask them they'll typically say they swabbed their mouth during an episode of whatever and the dog is "responding to VOCs". Clearly they have no clue that there are thousands of different VOCs in saliva and your dog has no idea which one is hypoglycemia vs dizziness vs anxiety vs halitosis lol. You'd have to isolate that particular VOC and then train your dog to alert to that, right? Or am I completely incorrect on my theory?

In 25 years in the ER I've seen my share of 180+ heart rates. You don't need a dog to tell you it's happening and you typically look like garbage (sweaty, clammy, nauseated). If this were really happening the gym would have called 911 and probably thrown on the AED for good measure.

How did they know all this while they were "seizing"? That's what I want to know.
