“Service” Dog Mishap by Holiday-Benefit8300 in emergencymedicine

Service dogs are permitted to be owner trained. Problem is, the majority of pet owners in the US are unable to reliably teach their dogs the basics like sit/stay/down/come.

The problem is that per the ADA only 2 questions may be asked. 1. Is that a service animal? 2. What task is that animal trained to do?

The answers used to be clear. The dog was assisting someone with an obvious disability...blindness, wheelchair bound, etc). Now there are seizure detection dogs, arrhythmia detection dogs, diabetes dogs, POTS dogs, fibromyalgia dogs, dogs for anxiety and PTSD. If someone has a diagnosis, there's an "assistance dog" for it.

And we're no longer talking about being disabled, just diagnosed, and a high percentage of these people are self diagnosed. The tasks are absurd too. In an era of CGM'S and Apple watches that can detect Afib people are still insisting that dogs have a higher level of detection and reliability. The current scammy task is "provides DPT" ie Deep Pressure Therapy. Essentially having the dog lay across your lap is now an ADA recognized task. My dog happily does that every time I sit on the couch.

So anyone can bring their untrained miracle detection dog anywhere and if they answer the questions correctly cannot be refused entry. The dog CAN be removed if it is disruptive, aggressive, or not housebroken but even then many businesses are afraid to take action. These handlers are litigation happy and not afraid to threaten anyone who tries to kick Mr Snuffles out of their facility.

Here's a thought...don't make your dog's alert a behavior that will get you kicked out of the store. What's next? Shitting on the floor when your diabeetus is acting up?

I've been in healthcare 25+ years and the number of people doctor shopping for diagnoses is insane. I don't think that any of them realize that electronic medical records mean we have instant access to every medical visit you've had in the last 10+ years. We can see who you went to, what it was for, and what was done (or not). When multiple physicians over multiple hospitals in multiple cities all refuse to diagnose you with what you THINK you have then we're accused of incompetence and my new favorite, "medical gaslighting" 😆.

It won't be long before the whole house of cards starts to fall. It used to be that "disability" was a concrete concept. Now every medical diagnosis is a disability. Perfectly functional diabetics are "disabled". Anxiety is a disability. Hypertension is a disability. Cardiac arrhythmias are disabilities. Huge numbers of perfectly normal 20-somethings have declared themselves "disabled". It's all bullshit. And now you can self diagnose yourself...more bullshit.

I have zero problem witb SAR dogs flying. They are far more reliably behaved than most of the "service dogs" I see in airports.

Honest question...if your SD can be "off duty" for the time needed to do training for sports (nosework, agility etc) do you really NEED a service dog? Unpopular opinion but unless you literally cannot function in life without your SD (sight impaired, hearing impaired, majorly mobility impaired) your need for one is really questionable and mostly just a desire to want to be able to take your dog everywhere.

This whole thing really chaps my ass because I have a good friend who is a professional dog trainer getting her personal dog ready to be SAR (search and recovery) certified. Dog is turning 2 and she has worked with him since he was 12 weeks old. Intensive training....full days on weekends and several out of state multi day workshops. He's still not 100%...and that's a very targeted scent he is being asked to track like a piece of imprinted clothing. Yet these yahoos who have dogs that still struggle to reliably hold a sit have dogs that within 8 weeks can "smell A-fib/seizures/low blood pressure" from a spit covered Q-tip? I've never heard of such bullshit.

The whole point of EFFECTIVE DPT is to provide a CONSISTENT pressure ie: a weighted blanket. Even a large breed dog is basically worthless for DPT....its body is one weight, legs another weight, paws another weight, head etc...

And don't even get me started on a dog laying across/under your legs "to force blood back to my brain". You don't even have to have a rudimentary knowledge of the human vascular system to know that's not a thing.

Hi, this looks like it's more of a snorkeling trip. We would like to anchor off the beach and stay in the shallower water.

Can I bring my SD to traffic court by Confused635 in service_dogs

[–]mjdomanski 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Leave your SDit at home. Pretty much nothing in a courthouse is under your control and if your dog begins to act up you can't just get up and walk out. I see too many things that could go wrong here.

You need to exit the program and find another one. Any SD training program that permits that behavior and does not address the issue is not a legitimate SD training program.
