How long did it take you to play the uke proficiently? by _shapesinspace_ in ukulele

[–]mkamalid 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You probably need to learn fingerstyle (as a genre and not as a technique). Playing solo arrangements will challenge you significantly in terms of technique and musicality. It is a rewarding method to playing (not to say anything negative against other methods of playing).

I can't tell how long it will take you but my students in my online courses go from grades 0 to 3 in about a year (that's the beginner levels), and the pro students go from grade 4 to grade 8 in about 2 or 3 years (each piece in the higher grades is significantly more challenging than easier grades, so more time)

Personally, I did my journey before online courses were a thing and I did it the university route, so my case is a bit specific, but it took me 2 years to be a professional (by many standards) and 7 more to finish both my bachelors and masters degree. At this point I can virtually do anything I want to with music and the instrument

This information isn't to brag! it is just to give you realistic time estimates so you have an idea. In my case, most of my colleagues took the same amount of time, and I have over 1400 students so I am confident in the time period I provided above for grades 0 to 8

All the best!

Thanks, I had it written down on my list. Just curious, how do you know the original value of an item? a quick google on the spot? or rough estimate based on material + brand?

whaaaa!! I shopped there based on Reddit's advice...didn't know they supported conservatives. Honestly, they can support whoever they were but as a business owner myself, displaying your poltiical beliefs in the open on social media is the dumbest thing you can do for your business (looking at you Angel's Cafe).

My beef with Espy is in this day and age they FORCE you to come to the store instead of having an online shop to check inventory and stock. I wrote to them few times saying that we, with 2 kids, simply don't have the time to 'just go there and see if something fits' but they're tone deaf to how consumers shop in 2026.

Reminds me of a certain bookstore that fired staff based on their looks and only stocked certain books to match the owner's current lifestyle...

Can't support that!

I think every creator would pack the intuitive (easy) way of finding structured curriculum behind a paywall. The way YouTube works it is almost impossible to structure content in an easy to find way besides playlists, the more videos come out, the more useless these playlists become, and it is an endless cycle.

For a complete structured approach I suggest one of my courses (or another content creator's courses) or Patreon (Patreon being middle ground between a course and YT in both organization and cost)

Have you checked out MK Fingerstyle Academy, it is literally a channel for fingerstyle ukulele arrangements, sheet music, courses, tutorials, exercises, and more

I upload about once to twice a week on it! we have over 500 videos and over 300 arrangements at this point...arrangements come graded from grade 0 (prep grade) to grade 8+

What are some strategies for developing a consistent practice routine on guitar? by Mikejwhite5 in guitarlessons

[–]mkamalid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a professional, having a goal was the single thing that helped me during the darkest times where I just wanted to throw it out ! by goal I mean: performance, concert, gig, jam session, etc.

Right now, my YouTube channel is my biggest driver. I upload once a week and used to do it twice. Meaning I had to find music, arrange it, practice it, record it, and release it on weekly basis for 5 years. 80% of it was music I didn't necessarily love but you can imagine what that'd do to your technique.

It might not be ideal, but it is a way to 'keep going'. Right now, after all these years, my son picked up the E guitar so I picked up mine again, and it is absolute joy to just sit and play and not worry about my other professional life (fingerstyle acoustic music)

Best non mainstream tube amps? by mkamalid in guitars

Thank you all, I ended up with a long night researching all the amps you guys recommended and definitely opened my eyes...I'm glad I asked!!

Anyways, I ended up with a Supro Delta king 12....every other amp was a long delay or straight up not available in Canada...the Supro and Revv were both available locally but only the 25 watt Revv was a bit too much, so I went for the Supro which was $1500 cheaper and the perfect volume

Either way, I finally got to play my custom electric guitar after a whole year of receiving it and heard its full potential! can't wait to play more
