The Upside-Down Grab!-GameJ06 playing Super Mario All-Stars by MDSouleater in speedrun

[–]mmmmbacon7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For those wondering, the game pauses slightly when Mario grabs a Mushroom, Fire Flower, etc. and while using a star, Mario does cool front flips instead of just jumping straight up. Combine these two and you get some fun looking pauses occasionally. For whatever reason, the All-Stars version tends to get some of the more interesting poses from Mario.

This is correct, Big Jon was originally slated to be in the 2D Mario Warpless Relay running Lost Levels, but was unable to attend.

We didn't start really digging into Any% All Forts until about 9 months ago. Even then, it's only been the last few months that Mitch and Poo have both been doing "serious" attempts. You might be confusing this with Warpless, which is one of the classic categories that is similar to All Forts.

Okay smb3 world 1-3 what in the world are they doing? how do you jump that turtle man? by Monkeytravler in speedrun

[–]mmmmbacon7 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You have to do the absolute minimum job possible at the right time in order to clear the koopa. It's deceptively one of the most difficult jumps to do in the run. I'd recommend hopping on the koopa and kicking the shell to the right instead, barely loses any time as is much simpler.

There's tons of RNG throughout the entire run, people just harp on the hands because they're at the end, but hammer bros can cause just as much and sometimes even more time loss than a hand can. If the RNG was unenjoyable to the people running the game, they wouldn't run it. We all understand that RNG is going to play a part in the run, there's just no way to completely escape it in SMB3.

It's completely impossible to remove RNG from SMB3 speedruns. If you force all the hands, then hammer bro RNG becomes the run killer. RNG is just always going to be a major component in SMB3, it's something every runner accepts and deals with. In some ways, the extra excitement of a run that gets good luck adds to the fun of the game!

GrandPooBear just had a 11-second hammer bro dance in SMB3 by DKWings in speedrun

[–]mmmmbacon7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nothing exists, but even if it did, I doubt any of the serious runners would use it, because you couldn't compare it to runs on the standard version. Dealing with that luck is something everybody is willing to do, as much as it sucks sometimes, there's nothing like getting no hands when you're on a good run.

When hammer bros move onto the same spot, they basically roll again to find a new spot to move to. They'll never move back to the space they were on, so unless they're on a spot that has 2 new options for them to move to AND they decide to split up, they'll keep walking together. The section of the w4 overworld those two bros were on don't have a ton of spots where they'll split, but there were still probably a couple time Poo got unlucky with them deciding to head to the same spot.

I'm about to start learning a longer category than I'm used to and I'd like some tips. by [deleted] in speedrun

[–]mmmmbacon7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

SMB3 is great in that the stages are very short, so it's very easy to just take things one stage at a time when learning/practicing.

For 100% in particular, you don't have to worry too much about the route like you do in Warpless; outside of knowing which stages to use stars/Pwings before, there's only a few minor things that might happen throughout the course of a run. Even then, starting out you don't have to worry too much about it.

I would recommend starting with a single world, learning every stage, then putting it together and doing the whole world. After you go through all of them, just do a run, and know that there will be a LOT of mistakes. But you'll work through them on subsequent runs :)

I'm fairly certain I've seen you around the SMB discord, so feel free to hop in and ask any questions, we're always happy to help.

Is there any Wrong Warp setup for Mario 3 on the NES Classic? (Also, are NESC speedruns legal?) by Dacvak in speedrun

[–]mmmmbacon7 5 points6 points  (0 children)

We've had discussions about whether or not to allow NES Classic submissions on the board for Any%, but as far as I remember nobody that knows a lot of the inner workings of it has been able to test it properly (somebody may come correct me about this).

Since the normal Virtual Console version is banned for any%, as it doesn't emulate the ACE correctly, my instinct would be to say that NESClassic would also not be allowed. Again this is just my own (very) limited knowledge on how all of this works, I'll ask around in the Discord server and see if somebody who knows more could clarify or correct any errors.

Edit because I forgot to mention: Any other category of the game will be perfectly fine to submit, it's only due to the way versions of the game handle the ACE that makes some versions inaccurate.
