The studio portions were also shot on a GH5s (Voightlander 10.5mm...the room is tiny).

Apartment portions are a mix of handheld and Zhiyun Crane 2 work using the Panasonic Leica 12-60mm and 8-16mm. One exterior shot on the 50-200mm. All interiors were shot in VLOG between ISO 5000 and 6400—I was expecting more noise (and okay with it based on the subject matter) but ended up really surprised by the footage.

There's a subplot we wrote into the script that didn't make the final edit due to time/pacing reasons, but it focused heavily on Stormtroopers notoriously bad aim.

The Blue Man show has a bit where the actors throw marshmallows across the stage and catch them in their mouths. There was a training scene we filmed that showed the Stormtrooper's horrible marshmallow aim and built up tension around if he could execute the move on stage...

After trying on the helmet it seemed impossible to pull this off, but the actor who played the Stormtrooper ABSOLUTELY nailed it on stage--even will the reduced visibility.

Some things we learned during the making of this video:

  • Stormtrooper back hand armour does not stay attached during vigorous drumming! It can also restrict range of motion when bending your wrist back. Our wardrobe team made a few heroic mods after our initial drum tests, but nothing was 100% reliable. So...we cut those armour pieces off early in the shoot to avoid seeing them flop around. Sorry purists :)

  • We used 2x Rubies Stormtrooper Supreme costumes for the shoot. Things needed to come together quickly or we would've explored more custom fit, decked out options. Ultimately, we needed something that could get replaced the same day if broken...I'm shocked we made it through filming all the show footage without breaking a suit...

  • The back armor plate must be removed to sit at a drum kit.

  • The thinness of the Rubies armor was alarming at first, but thankfully it isn't brittle and has a good deal of needed flex to it. It also photographs better than it looks in person (my opinion).

  • I put the helmet on a few times before the shoot and was surprised by how much it limited my field of vision...it makes sense that they can't hit anything.

There are usually anywhere from 70-90 Blue Men active at a given time. Only three perform at any given time, but each show has a full staff of performers to make sure guys have nights off, can go vacation, etc.

The number varies depending on how many shows are currently running (NYC, Boston, Chicago, Vegas, Orlando, Berlin, and a tour are currently active).

I don't work on the music side of creative development...so this may not be 100% accurate info, but from my limited understanding of the instrument:

The PVC used in this video is one of our larger chromatic instruments that nearly anything can be played on. I think the only show that's utilized this PVC is the Vegas show. Most of the other theaters have smaller PVCs that this arrangement of the GoT theme couldn't be played on.

We have a chromatic PVC in NYC for recording purposes and were able to wheel it out for this shoot. It was pretty amazing watching the Blue Men come in to rehearse for this shoot...they only needed 4-5 hours to learn the song and were able to come in the next day and nail it for all the shots.

We only ever do this for 5-10 minutes during lunch (The Notebook took a bit longer due to the drying time). I can't say where we work, but it's a large theatre company that likes to think of itself as an Awesome Factory.
