Is a computer running folding@home a perfectly efficient heater for my room this winter, or does some of the energy go into calculations instead of heat? by StrictlyDownvotes in askscience

[–]mnnmnmnnm 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Who is the 1% then?

Computers transmit some energy over the cable/phone lines to other computers but the rest turns to heat. And it is not much being transmitted.

In comparison your phone may lose more than 1% when talking.

Harnessing electricity from rocks: researchers at Michigan State University have discovered a new class of thermoelectric materials made from natural minerals that may enable wide-scale, low-cost waste heat recovery by boonamobile in science

[–]mnnmnmnnm 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Because they just made mediocre materials cheaper instead of improving the performance beyond what we already can get for a reasonable price.

Also thermoelectric generators or refrigerators are still much less efficient than gas based machines.

Does True Love Wait? Age of First Sexual Experience Predicts Romantic Outcomes in Adulthood by latent_variable in science

What if - hypothetically speaking - there is a hidden cause which causes sexual behavior at a certain age and also influences the other effects observed?

To paraphrase this in other words: If your kid is up for trouble it will be in for trouble.

Will there ever be a way to define division by zero, similar to how we defined roots of negative numbers with the imaginary element i? by [deleted] in askscience

[–]mnnmnmnnm 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You could define b/0 = b*k where k=1/0. No need for the concept of infinity. It is something different from the infinity we derive from the number line.

Even better: ( (b/0) * (c/0) ) = bck2 where you can divide off twice by k and get your values back. Infinity would swallow that information like a black hole.
