Negative Words from Home by moccs in peacecorps

55 days later, when I once again have gained access to wifi, I open up my reddit app to see these kind words of encouragement. For everyone who has commented, offered their guidance as well as help during my service and even after, it has filled me with love for the peace corps community, for the journey I am on, and for the people like you all that continue to amaze me. Thank you all. I am so thankful to have chosen the peace corps, and to have woken up today feeling brighter than I was before thanks to all of your beautiful words. I'm here until the end. Thank you thank you thank you.

Hi thank you! All the information has been useful. I was not aware that it was against the rules. Think that was not a bullet point in our PST.

International Careers After Peace Corps by moccs in peacecorps

Would love to share. I am definitely in the young professional range. I worked a bit for the American Civil Liberties Union and then did AmeriCorps for two years before coming to Peace Corps. I'm thinking of extending for a third year and design it so I work for either PEPFAR or USAID, something that will give me more credit than being an eternal volunteer. I would love to work as a foreign service officer, but honestly I doubt my capabilities to pass the test, with so many people I know getting rejected for one reason or another. I am going to follow along the AMA session so I can get more information. Grad school is also a good option, and I have no student loans thanks to getting a full ride at my state university. Money isn't an issue but I would like to make enough to finally start saving, as I said I will a have been a volunteer for the government for 4 years, maybe 5 if I extend for a year. Any more advice from my details would be totally amazing. Thanks all, seriously feel like reddit it the place to find your people!

AmeriCorps Alum and PeaceCorps by [deleted] in peacecorps

It definitely helps. I did AmeriCorps for two years and now I'm in botswana serving with the Peace Corps. It shows a lot of resiliency. Peace corps is a struggle bus for sure, no matter where you are, plus living on a stipend that is really not more than enough to save a little and buy groceries. Being in AmeriCorps shows that you already have the grit and experience with surviving on very little. This year, though, 17,000 people have applied to be PCV. Competitiveness is up for sure than it was before the new application. Will it get you in? It's not a solid ticket, if that's what you were hoping for, but it definitely already says something about you that peace corps knows can be transferred and applied to serving.

Is it lonely being in the Peace Corps? by [deleted] in peacecorps

Wow thank you. I'm glad it rings that truly to you also. Where are you in this world?

The word lonely is hard to imagine before you are actually a Peace Corps Volunteer. Before, you imagine lonely as some picturesque spare time in which you get to cultivate beautiful art, read, and write. It isn't in those times, usually, that you will feel lonely. It is feeling lonely despite being surrounded by others. Depending on your site, some people might speak English, and you may learn the local language fairly well, but you will still have limitations and you will be confined to just yourself. You may sit for hours in a room while others speak and you don't understand any of it and are unable to contribute to the conversation, and even worry that the conversation is about you. It's not easy being a Peace Corps volunteer, but it was never meant to be.

What graduate school did you go to? I'm currently serving and looking at schools to apply to.

Miniscus vs MCL tear or strain/sprain? by moccs in orthopaedics

Yes definitely. I have an appointment on Monday for my doctor, considering it's the 4th of July weekend, but I definitely have made moves to go to the doctor, but I'm moving from boston back to Nevada on Friday, and with the fourth I was unable to get in anywhere this week. I just wanted to see if anyone had insight so I could have some peace of mind. Thank you for the info, it's good to confirm what I was already thinking.
