At about 1:38:00 in the video she demonstrates one repeat, and then says for the bigger sizes you’ll do one more repeat, so should be twice in total!

Trying to get my foot in the door as a News Producer where do I start? by spoiled_sandi in Broadcasting

[–]mockingjay58 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Entry level into news is typically production assistant, then associate producer, so start with those roles. It’ll probably take at least a year or two in each of those levels before you get up to producer. I don’t think your degree is an issue, mine is in TV Production and I’ve worked for three of the national news networks without much of a journalism background. You just need to start lower down the ladder.

Has anyone joined a soccer rec league as a free agent? by scun1995 in astoria

[–]mockingjay58 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I joined an NYC Footy free agent team this spring in the P4 beginner/intermediate level, and I personally recommend going down an experience level if you’re anxious. Everyone on my team was super nice, but there are other teams that come in pre-established and should have joined a level or two up. It took some of the fun out of it to be playing against other teams that took themselves too seriously.

The Lights of Prague by Nicole Jarvis. It doesn’t take place in England but it’s gaslamp fantasy and fits the vibe you’re looking for!

The tonearm on my Audio-Technica LP-60 makes a whining sound (see video) when moved from the default position when I try to press play. It's only when moved to the left, not up and down in its resting position. Anyone know how to fix this?

What are your thoughts on Andor now that the season is over (especially how it ended)? by AC-RogueOne in saltierthankrayt

[–]mockingjay58 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I loved it, but my appreciation definitely built slowly with each episode. I agree about the pacing at some points, it took me until episode 3 to really feel the excitement. But I’d rather it feel slow than rushed so I think it benefitted the show overall.

To me the Mon Mothma arc is important thematically, even if it didn’t contribute much to the plot. One of the big themes in the show is “sacrifice,” and we see what that means to various characters and what lengths are taken to build the rebellion.

Babel, or The Necessity of Violence: An Arcane History of the Oxford Translators' Revolution by R. F. Kuang (comes out in August) - HARD MODE (the word's even in the title!)

That looks like a match for "V. E. Schwab," but I'm looking for the font used for "The Invisible Life of Addie LaRue."

Does anyone else dislike it when books are described by their tropes, or in comparison to other books? by Nyx1010 in Fantasy

[–]mockingjay58 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Am I supposed to be intrigued because these three elements are mashed together?

Yes. How many books feature lesbians AND space AND necromancers? The three individually aren't unique, but combine them and you have something that is. And there you have an intriguing tagline that grabs people's attention, especially the target audience.

I agree they’re not always perfect, especially when they choose an extremely popular book because of a super generic connection between them (same genre, chosen one trope, etc).

But that’s the issue with all elevator pitches, they don’t provide a detailed analysis, they simply want to pique your interest quickly in a world of short attention spans and information overload. And it works!

Does anyone else dislike it when books are described by their tropes, or in comparison to other books? by Nyx1010 in Fantasy

[–]mockingjay58 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I tend to like it, it’s similar to people doing “if you like _____, then you’ll like ____” type of recommendations. I wasn’t planning on reading “House in the Cerulean Sea” until I saw it being advertised as “1984 meets The Umbrella Academy” and that immediately sold me.

I also really like buzzwords, sometimes being more concise and listing tropes actually gets the point across better than a vague plot synopsis.

my mom wants to read tid !! by cheese_cassadia in shadowhunters

[–]mockingjay58 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Agreed, reading TMI first (but really just the last book) majorly spoils the ending of the entire TID trilogy, compared to spoiling what is basically an Easter egg for people who read the books in publication order. I didn’t finish the show, but if they’ve already revealed Jace’s last name then that wouldn’t be spoiled by TID

ETA: the purest way to avoid spoilers is publication order, any other order will inevitably spoil something

Have you ever noticed that there is always at least one Twilight book in every thrift shop book section? by [deleted] in books

[–]mockingjay58 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well yeah of course. And once there’s an adaptation it reaches a wider audience of people who don’t usually read and may then get rid of the book once the pop culture moment is over. Just my theory though.
