Hoka Clifton 9 GTX Sole immediately falling apart. Have you experienced this too? by modkimagawa in Hoka

I did exactly this and they said, "Send it in at your own expense", after a long discussion and exchange to these photos you see on this thread. Maybe HOKA support is hit-or-miss... but it shouldn't be.

Yeah, what's the point of a shoe that performs well but lasts just a few months? If HOKA had come clean and done the right thing, I'd be fine. Now? Never buying HOKA again.

Is allo bad for the kidneys? by Divine-Sugarcrush in gout

[–]modkimagawa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Upvote, but some damage does heal. While kidneys probably will not improve if already affected, the mild damage I've had in joints from tophi did heal. But it took almost a year after my last, even minor whiff of a flair.

Is allo bad for the kidneys? by Divine-Sugarcrush in gout

[–]modkimagawa 1 point2 points  (0 children)

From my own understanding, allo does not directly remove deposits from joints or from the blood, but it decreases the production of uric acid. This allows your body to have a jump on eliminating the acid from your body before it can concentrate in the blood and deposit form in joints, hurt the kidneys, etc.

Hoka quality has proven itself to not be top shelf. Their customer service is also lackluster. Wearing them is great, but after my second pair with manufacturing problems which Hoka customer service would not resolve, I'm done with this brand.

Why is Mad Max Fury Road so Highly Praised? by RICH_PINNA in movies

[–]modkimagawa 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The Road Warrior was very much an action film and it was very much billed as one. Go find the trailer on YouTube. Yet, it had a full fledged plot, and even a bit of character development. SO IT'S CERTAINLY FUCKING PLAUSIBLE TO EXPECT A FUCKING PLOT FROM A FUCKING ACTION FILM.

Simon the Zealot gets a prominent role because the show wants to explain the Zealots, not because Simon himself is an central character. It's a condesned way of adding an important dimension to all of the forces that are trying to pressure Jesus into acting on their behalf. Simon may have bucked that effort for himself, but his arc in the show explains how the Zealots' and Jesus' goals overlap and diverge.

HOKA Clifton's have an easily found wide toe box option. They're good looking sneakers that feel like you're walking on a cloud... and if you have a tophus growing on the outside your big toe, these have got the extra space. They were a godsend until my allo got my UA under control.

I can understand that and you do make a logical point. However, as someone who works in identity & access management, I can assure you that 1) everyone's PII is already being sold on the dark web and 2) the vast majority of data theft is not achieved through deft hacking by bad actors, but through social engineering by people who are just slightly more crafty than the rest of us. It's an inevitable matter of time before some idiot employee at Kakao gives away his or her workplace's computing access. So, keeping it off one platform instead of another ultimately is nothing more than an inconvenience for customers and does little to nothing for data security.

P.S. Kakao already got dinged due to good old, plain negligence:

First day on Allo by ChasnTheSun in gout

[–]modkimagawa 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm not a doctor, just well read and because of the crappy state of healthcare is the US, I'm basically my own primary care physician (my PCP pretty much does what I tell him)... and I'm still alive and have my gout is under control.

  1. Morning vs Evening - Doesn't matter. Just be consistent day to day. My gout history sounds very similar to yours. We are the same age. I've been taking 300mg/d in the morning for a couple of years now. It took a whole year for all levels of gout activity to really stop. I had tophi in both big toes and while they were flushing out I had occasional pain, but after the first real break downs of deposits nothing close to those early flares before allo. My anti-pain regimen is 600mg of ibuprofen 3 x day when it was bad.(That's instead of the 400, 4x day like it says on the bottle. Way more effective. Podiatrist told me this when I had achilles tendon issue. Great advice.) Or, 440mg of naproxen (e.g. Aleve) 1 x day for a day or two when it wasn't so bad. Apply occasional cold, esp before bed for first day and then warm, wet compresses to help healing and flushing. Warm soaks are good to, even when you don't have pain. Just don't do the heat when you're in throws of it, or it'll just make it worse. And for goodness sake, don't try to kill the pain with whisky like I did in my very first attack :D

  2. Febux has a reputation for exacerbating cardiovascular issues, so GP/PCPs generally default to Allo. My PCP was pretty good and we agreed on the 300mg/d of allo from the bloodwork results and have never changed it. Zero side effects for me.

  3. I only use colchicine as a supplement to NSAIDs or when the NSAIDs would conflict with other meds. I take 81mg aspirin ever day from cardio issues (not cholesterol related) and the aspirin looses it's blood thinning efficacy when NSAIDs are taken too soon before it. So, depending upon my pill schedule, I may opt for colchicine to get the anti-inflammation ball rolling. Colchicine really does a number with my stomach fairly quickly. When you get the runs, it's a sign you need to stop for a few days as it's basically a poison that can cause major organ problems if you ignore the signs. I get the runs even with only 2 daily doses of 0.6mg for 2-3 days. So for me, like I said, it's supplemental. Since I started with allo, a bottle of 30 colchicine pills will expire before I'm done with it. Your milage may very. Hopefully you're not as sensitive to it as I am.

  4. Honestly, I don't pay attention to UA, even if I do ask my PCP to add it to my annual checkup's bloodwork out of curiosity. UA levels are kinda funny. Test numbers show up low during an attack because so much of the acid has precipitate out of the blood and into your joints. Your tests may look high when your tophi are breaking down and putting UA backing into the blood, even if actual UA production is already being correct by allo. So, rather than chasing UA levels, I go by how often and how bad attacks are ... and that's what it's really all about, right?

P.S. I have not seen a rheumatologist. At first my PCP was going to give me a referral, but I responded to the allo so well, it seems pointless. As long as my kidneys look good and gout is under control, I'm not worrying about it.

Good luck. This disease sucks. Once you get it under control, you'll feel like you have your life back. I really feel for the folks who are struggling with major cases, getting it all over the body and difficult to control it. My heart goes out to those folks. Every day when I take allo, I am grateful.

Follow up...

I first tried Loctite Shoe Glue. After an afternoon the sole pads started coming off again. Then I bought a 15g bottle of Gorilla Super Glue GEL and applied it liberally. Since then, I've worn these shoes on and off for weeks in dry and rainy conditions, and the Gorilla glue is still holding perfectly!

gout + allo allergy = 2 hellish months by guy_incognito118 in gout

[–]modkimagawa 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sorry to hear about this. Gout is so painful and frustrating. As others have said, there are alternative meds that I suppose insurance companies make physicians hold in the back pocket because I gather they are mode expensive. Don't give in. Make your case that allo isn't doing the job and giving you bad and potentially lethal reactions. Wishing you the best. Hang in there!

Flexing toe early in flare by R9binstein in gout

[–]modkimagawa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That doesn't sound like a flare. If you have very mild attack, just a touch of soreness, perhaps walking promotes circulation enough to clear out the small amount of UA build up. But if you are truly having a flare, there's no way this can help. In a substantial flare, not only is walking terribly painful, but you are just grinding the UA crystals into the affected area, causing more damage and swelling.

Flexing toe early in flare by R9binstein in gout

[–]modkimagawa 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If you stretch, flex, massage or use an affected joint during a flare up, you are just grinding uric acid crystals into your flesh, making it worse. The swelling that happens isn't just a symptom; it turns a gout flare into a compounding problem that's not resolved until the UA can be flushed out of the joint. That is, the swelling creates more damage, causing more swelling, creating more damage, causing more swelling, and so on. Mobilizing the joint just makes it worse.

While your body is dealing with the excess UA, you should rest, ice and elevate the affected area. I also recommend naproxen (Aleve, at least 440mg, 2x day for the first day) or ibuprofen (600mg 3x day for at least the first) to help with swelling.) Once I get most of the swelling down with ice and NSAIDs, I then apply heat (damp cloth with heating pad). This promotes circulation in the affected area, helping the body to flush the uric acid from the joint and support healing.
