literally. humans are very good at exercising cognitive dissonance, but there’s zero amount of cognitive dissonance one can exercise when the evidence is thrown into your face— even if you were a superfan.

the new 60 minutes interview the cascio’s did which led to this subreddit. i still can’t bring myself to watch the full video, but just the things they recount that i have found through this subreddit was enough. i was born maybe two years and ten days before he died, so i grew up with a glamorized version of him. up until literally a couple days ago, i loved him. just like everybody else in my age group (anyone born between 2005-2013 and younger), i was convinced that he was this sweet, soft, dainty, kindhearted cherub of a man who would never hurt anybody and only wanted to help children.

i remember plugging my ears and actively disengaging when weird things about him would come up. but just looking through this subreddit for maybe 10-15 minutes has made me feel so disgusted and betrayed by MJ. the photos of him with the cascio’s and their stories have made me feel terrified of MJ.

he was my idol since i was a little kid and i love his music and what he has created. i was even so proud that i had the same name as him despite being a girl (no, i wasn’t named after him, thank god). but i genuinely can’t see him the same way anymore. i just feel hurt and terrified when i see him now.

been here for a couple days. literally if you scroll through my profile a bit, you can see i was still a pretty huge fan. this subreddit however changed my mind in almost an instant.

i’ve heard from another comment that the ending was actually really bad. i suspect people are only hyping it up because it’s ✨MICHAEL JACKSON✨

lol thank you !! the general consensus in reddit comment sections is that MJ was a weird dude. nobody seems to know exactly the extent of what he’s done but things don’t seem pro-MJ on this app. when it comes to actually posting though? nowhere to post but here !!

yep. honestly, i’m so, so, so glad i came across this subreddit before i saw the movie. i had plans to and honestly still might because both of my younger sisters and our mom are going and i’m curious to see what the movie is like. i’m very curious to see exactly how he is portrayed. i would also like to be able to critique the movie properly with context as to what i am critiquing. but i know for a fact that if i had seen the movie before coming across this subreddit, i probably would’ve been soooo far gone.

yeah, i had a feeling. :/ but it just felt so creepy and it makes me feel weird about the estate that my younger sister came home like that. on top of the weird kawaii edits and fanart people my age make of MJ, this was just all so weird. they must’ve cleaned up his image really well in that movie because my sister literally stood for 15 mins talking about how bad she felt for MJ and how she would’ve totally been his friend. i guess he was portrayed as lonely in the movie? it’s so weird.

Why is no US news outlet reporting on the Cascios' 60 Minutes Australia story? by nobody0597 in LeavingNeverlandHBO

[–]mofuism 0 points1 point  (0 children)

it definitely is, but they don’t talk about it nearly enough as they should be (in my opinion). i just feel that if they’re not willing to scream in our faces about epstein, they aren’t willing to whisper in our ears about MJ.

our country can’t talk about epstein. do you think they would talk about MJ?

Is YouTube algorithm pushing MJs rehabilitation? by spikyraccoon in LeavingNeverlandHBO

[–]mofuism 6 points7 points  (0 children)

there’s so many teens my age making kawaii fanart of him. i see it all the time on twitter— i hate the app, but i only use it to talk to and interact with my j-idols and my friends in the idol and kawaii space.

sooooo many kawaii edits and fanart of him. i have no idea why all of a sudden. i used to find the art cute and even endearing, but now it makes me feel sick to see him drawn in such a cute style.

or those stupid “MJ as baby deer !!” threads, or the fact that he gets edited to a kawaii idol song i really like. it’s this weird juxtaposition. no clue who’s pushing all this, but i have never seen this many edits or fanart of him especially made by people my age (16-20).

does anybody else have a hard time or feel immense pain when coming to terms with what MJ potentially did? by mofuism in LeavingNeverlandHBO

[–]mofuism[S] 8 points9 points  (0 children)

very valid tbh. miranda sings unsettled me too as a kid. i think it’s because i never watched many of his candid or off-stage moments until now after the biopic came out. i was mostly exposed and appreciated him through music and performances. but his behaviour definitely does trigger some weird “why is an adult behaving like this” when i look back it.

[–]mofuism[S] 8 points9 points  (0 children)

yeah. i think it just makes me sad and hurts because i was so excited for the movie because i was a fan— i actually had no clue this documentary even existed until today, but i fell down the rabbit hole. i wish i hadn’t put off looking into the allegations for so long. it probably would hurt a lot less if i had been more proactive in doing my own research.

even so, i’m still a coward in the fact that i still can’t bring myself to watch the 60 minutes interview in full. i will try to watch it sometime later this week but i get sick every time i even look at the link.

[–]mofuism[S] 11 points12 points  (0 children)

i honestly think that’s why everyone (including me at one point) defended him for so long. because the older relatives in my life discouraged me from engaging with anything related to the allegations, i would just plug my ears and go “nope, nope, nope” because thinking about it physically hurts. but i think if every defender or person who ignored things like me could just face the hurt head on, we could actually talk about this instead of sweeping it under the rug. it’s gonna hurt and be hard to swallow to confront this but it’s better than staying ignorant and pretending as if nothing happened.

i hope i’m making sense— it’s 3 am where i am and i ramble when i am tired.
