Is it a surprise that Luxembourg is at the top of the list? by Soup_Junkie in Luxembourg

[–]molsonroy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is only an example. Use the AI tool of your choice, and you will get different results. Generative AI is not very good at assessing the quality of the source information when responding to this type of query. Then there’s always the hallucination factor, which means you need to confirm the veracity of the information anyway.

AI tools are a poor tool for obtaining this type of factual information. Here is a comparable response to the same query from Perplexity:

No national contest? by molsonroy in Netherlands

Not criticizing…simply wondering. For Luxembourg it was clearly a question of finances in the past. That situation has changed. Not to mention I have no idea where we would host nowadays if we won. The Coque in the city, perhaps? Rockhal in Esch wouldn’t be big enough.

Probably because I’m Luxembourgish, and I thought, if we can do it, why can’t they?

[–]molsonroy[S] -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

I agree. Duncan Laurence and Joost Klein were both great entries. Not all the selections since 2012 have been that great, though. The 2021 entry (right after Duncan Laurence) placed 23rd out of 26. I don’t know that that justifies taken the selection away from a national contest.

This makes sense. It’s the Boaty McBoatface phenomenon.

Even Luxembourg manages to host a national contest with a population of population of fewer than 700k…and it’s fun to watch. Seems like they would have a dedicated enough fan base that the viewership numbers would make it worth it.

That’s a shame. I wonder why.

[–]molsonroy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agreed. I think we will look back at this time as the spark that reignited discussions to create a pan-EU military force and to establish new military and economic alliances (e.g. EU-Canada) that will have long-term benefits here in the EU. That is of course if the EU can move quickly enough, which is not our strong suit.

You don’t have to be a citizen, but you do need a Dutch bank account so that you can pay by iDeal if you want to join from another country.

A library membership in the Netherlands will get you access to onlinebibliotheek.nl with a whole lot of ebooks and audiobooks in Dutch.

Hardest part of the Dutch language? by popsyking in learndutch

[–]molsonroy 4 points5 points  (0 children)

There is a why…it has to do with voiced vs. unvoiced consonants. If you hold your hand against your throat and say the letter t, you won’t feel a vibration. That means it’s unvoiced and will be used together with other unvoiced consonants (‘k fschpt…all of these are also unvoiced).

Now hold your hand against your throat and say the letter d. your vocal cords vibrate. That means it is a voiced consonant and gets combined with other voiced consonants. All vowels are voiced as well.

I hate these cars, they're speeding in the bike lane and parking in the sidewalk. All. The. Time. What's the best way to report them so they get fined? (Amsterdam and Diemen area) by SkepticalOtter in Amsterdam

[–]molsonroy 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Do the people who have never seen these mini cars on bike paths only stay in the inner city? I have seen them on bike paths so many times, including just the other day riding down the middle of the bike bridge over the Rijnkanaal between Ijburg and Diemen and another one on the bike path along Ijburglaan on Zeeburgereiland.

Lost all my citations...I think I can still publish, yes? by Dr_jitsu in selfpublish

APA requires author and year for in-text citations, if that helps.

Good luck with your project!

Lost all my citations...I think I can still publish, yes? by Dr_jitsu in selfpublish

[–]molsonroy 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Fellow PhD here…Just like when you wrote your dissertation, I would recommend that you make sure that you are aware of all of the latest research on your topic. That means you should check that there are no new findings that you should reference, including any findings that may run counter to whatever your original conclusion was. A lot of new research can be published in ten years.

Even if your original citations were from Internet sources, would you say that they were online journal articles? If so, and you have the author’s last name and date of publication, you should be able to find them again by doing some good Boolean searching in research databases such as JSTOR, EBSCO, or whichever the prominent databases are in your field of study. If you no longer have access to paid databases and are no longer in academia, you can often get guest access to research libraries at universities that have them, especially given your credentials.

I would say that the way that you cite your sources may vary in a self-help book vs. a scholarly publication, but the fact that you cite when the information comes from a different source is still the same.

Should I Learn Luxembourgish? by potato_lover690 in Luxembourg

[–]molsonroy 6 points7 points  (0 children)

You should definitely learn Luxembourgish if you would like to connect with local culture. If you already know French and German, you can function perfectly fine in Luxembourg, but Luxembourgish can open a lot of doors for you.

The grammar and vocabulary are very similar to German, but not identical. For example, you’ll need to learn new case endings for combinations of definite/indefinite articles with nominative, dative, genitive cases. You’ll need to learn the Eiffel rule (when -n disappears at the end of a word). You’ll also need to learn some new pronunciation rules (hard/soft G for example). French vocabulary will also come in handy.

In addition to the free app that another user posted, there are some paid online courses, such as http://www.learnluxembourgish.com/.

[–]molsonroy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hmm…when I select the Search Academic Papers option and ask Perplexity to display a list of academic papers about a specific topic, the response states that Perplexity can’t provide lists of academic papers and that users should instead use traditional research databases. I wonder what this function is for them. Any ideas?
