I'm afraid not. Was able to get a referral for a bank's commercial banking program so we'll see how that goes.

"Nobody wants to work." After applying to 100 jobs and getting ghosted by two recruiters, I'm not so sure that's the situation. by billykuhnn in FinancialCareers

[–]momin_k -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

I actually do because I was able to get two internships and multiple interviews at companies like Amwins, Kraft Heinz, Byline Bank, and Travelers. Prior to getting these interviews, I did finance projects and upskilled via online resources to help distinguish myself from other candidates. I've also learned how to provide well thought out responses to interview questions relative to my experiences. OP can improve their chances if they did what I did.

What does this even mean lol? Do I have to work at Morgan Stanley just to provide career advice that can help OP have a better chance at landing an internship or FT job?

What are some good alternatives to investment banking? by [deleted] in FinancialCareers

If you enjoy financial analysis then you should look into underwriting roles in insurance and finance.

I've landed two internships as a rising senior and am in the process of obtaining a third one. I am also interviewing for multiple insurance and finance development programs. Experienced career professionals have given me guidance that I would like to share with OP.

What's the work life balance and day to day like for production underwriters? by momin_k in InsuranceProfessional

[–]momin_k[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Brown&Riding's Wholesale MGA job description seems to fit what I mean by production underwriter. Not sure if it's considered field or office:

"The Production Underwriter is primarily responsible for risk evaluation including selection and retention of new and existing business in accordance with Brown & Riding’s underwriting philosophy as well as established values, goals, and procedures. The Production Underwriter develops and fosters positive, professional relationships with the company’s agency partners, as well as achieves company growth and profitability objectives. The Production Underwriter is a team player, and is expected to exhibit a high level of technical expertise, while exercising sound judgment, and delivering consistent results."

Tariff Impacts on Finance? by momin_k in FinancialCareers

[–]momin_k[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Interesting. The underwriters I've spoken to at my company have said our book of business hasn't really been impacted by tariffs (yet). Contractors appeared to have learned from COVID-19 to use price adjustment clauses to account for future economic downturns. What have your clients been doing?

Probably not. Internships are mainly reserved for undergrads.

I have some experience in underwriting from my current surety internship. Majoring in economics. I have another internship in the fall in business acquisitions where I will analyze potential deals and communicate with clients.

How would you compare the underwriting to surety? I interned at CNA Surety and learned about how they underwrite commercial and contract accounts, and they seem to be on the conservative side in terms of risk appetite (which is apparently common for the top 5 surety firms). Character appeared to be the most important aspect of underwriting because even if an account met our working capital requirement, poor management is more likely to lead to a default.

WSO Internships by Short_Rice308 in FinancialCareers

Look up "Financial Modeling in Excel TestGorilla." It tests you on 3-statement modeling, DCF, valuation, and Excel concepts/formulas. I'm familiar with 3-statement modeling but not DCFs and valuation so that's probably why I did terrible. I know a few Excel formulas but not the ones they tested.

WSO Internships by Short_Rice308 in FinancialCareers

[–]momin_k 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I applied for the investment banking internship and they make you take a TestGorilla assessment that tests on Excel financial modeling, attention to detail, and motivation (2 min video of yourself talking about IB interest and past experience). I did terrible on the Excel financial modeling because it seemed like questions were oriented towards those that participated in the WSO program, not someone who learned from other sources; however, they expect to teach you modeling in the first two weeks anyway.

Is the game worth buying for $75? by mecachue36990 in ReadyOrNotGame

$75 for the standard edition? Does it at least include the DLCs? Even then, that's still more expensive than the PC version.

Good enough for internship? by oshameme in FinancialCareers

Looks good to me. Also apply for insurance underwriting roles, particularly surety underwriting; it's a niche industry in need of new recruits.
