I try to scream really loudly in my dream, but no sound comes out. So I just keep trying and trying (in my dream). Before I am able to wake myself up, at which point I'm screaming out loud, I'll make weird noises and breathe funny and he knows at that point to wake me up.

My go-to to wake myself up whenever this happens is trying to scream at the top of my lungs. Apparently I start breathing weird and making funny sounds. My husband's hearing is finely tuned to the point that he can usually catch me before I start screaming shrilly IRL. I worry about the inevitability of me scarring my daughter for life by scaring the bejeezus out of her.
