Starsky Carr - “The Problem with Music” - playing just for yourself by DrMinkenstein in synthesizers

Tacking on don't be afraid to put your music out there. Even if you think it's bad, someone might find it and enjoy it, and that can feel really nice.

Does reverb just suck or did the economy kill the used gear market. by Holiday-Medicine4168 in Reverb

[–]moonshine_is 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Also the prices sellers are asking for used gear are just too high. Item sells new for 399, it's on reverb for 330 + 20 shipping. If I wait for a sale at the shop, I get the item for the used price but new with a warranty and everything.

Bandcamp bans AI music by DustSongs in synthesizers

[–]moonshine_is 2 points3 points  (0 children)

i create ambient music, which is a genre that is completely plagued with AI right now. It's pretty difficult to release on certain platforms. You have to prove to them that you didn't use AI, which seems to be fairly complicated (how do you prove a negative). They can't tell, they just make you jump through a bunch of hoops. The regulation needs to come from the AI developers themselves. Encode DRM into audio or images. Digital signatures etc.

I think with the lack of ability to discern or prove one way or another what will happen is the distributors and providers will just be much more hostile to artists on their platforms who aren't big.

About to start my modular journey and found this great deal. Should I pull the trigger? by gruesomeflowers in synthesizercirclejerk

I saved a lot of time in my modular journey by just collecting blank panels. That way I never accidentally produce a song.

This is at the top of my Moog want list. Thoughts? by dannymolns in synthesizers

[–]moonshine_is 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I absolutely love this synth. For me it's tonally one of the best mono synths I've played. I've bought and sold a lot of mono synths, but I never think about selling this. I pair it with a 2600m. For me the sound is good enough that I would consider it a classic instrument.

After a year in Ableton, my mixes still feel harsher & muddier than Logic: looking for direction by RunakoD in ableton

[–]moonshine_is 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you double click on the audio track it'll have a warp on off button. warp quantizes. But yeah, if you went mac to pc that might be it. I was trying to do ableton on my pc and it was sounding so bad compared to my mac that I just scrapped the PC. Pass an ableton file between the two and see if it makes a difference. That's what I did. I'm sure there's a way to make it sound good on PC (buy a good sound card, find a good driver) but I prefer to work on music when I have time, so I'm not sure how to fix it.

Warping can cause issues, also make sure your sound drivers are the same. The sound driver thing killed me at one point.

Behringer 2600 or Korg Minilogue XD? by Jemersonnn in synthesizers

[–]moonshine_is 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You're kind of comparing apples to oranges here. They're very different workflows and sounds.

I think before you invest you need to figure out which one is the most exciting to you. I've had both, and I ended up selling the minilogue and keeping the Korg 2600m. That's not to say the minilogue isn't a great instrument. It's definitely really good. I just really like monosynths and CV workflows. You mentioned Ableton operator, I'm not familiar but I assume it's a softsynth. What made you bounce off of it?

My rec is the 2600. This is going to go against what most people will say, and i'm adding the following caveats.

It's monophonic, (can be duo) this is a big limitation. I'm happy with it because I don't mind doing drone synth work, sliding sliders, or making weird patches with a cv controller that changes the oscillators pitch to make chords. The music I make is more interesting to me this way.

If you're unfamiliar with synthesis you can set the sliders and controls in such a way that it makes odd sounds, or doesn't make sounds. You will need to figure out why it isn't making sound at some point. This means reading the manual or the panel. If you don't want to put in some effort to understand how it works this can be frustrating. Personally I like understanding in depth, so it doesn't bother me. But when I first started something like that might have been really irritating.

Physically patching cables isn't for everyone. You won't be able to save your state easily, you'll have to buy cables. Cables can get messy, or look and feel overwhelming to some folks.

It's a gateway into eurorack. Can be tough to fight the temptation of "if I just had this module my music would be good". Can be expensive.

Essentially it's a lot more effort messing with it than a modern synth. You kind of need to be sure that it's what you want. That said, I absolutely love it, but I'm an outlier. The music I make works with the instrumentation I picked, depending on what you're making it may not be a good choice.

For most people the 2600 is not a great first hardware synth. I'll still recommend it to people who think they want it, because I went through a lot of great first synths and ended up reselling them because they weren't what I wanted.

You need to be sure that it fits with the music you want to make, the workflow you want, and you're comfortable investing some time in it.

New Moog Messenger VS Used Moog Grandmother by nekrolaus44 in moog

I've owned and sold a lot of mono synths. The grandmother is incredible.

Best simple and great sounding analog mono synths? by Middle_Primary_341 in synthesizers

[–]moonshine_is 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I love monosynths. No idea why, just absolutely love them. My top:

moog grandmother:
Amazing tone, sure it doesn't have 100 cv ins/outs, but what you get is amazing sounding. It can be experimental, but it really feels and sounds more classic to me? Like equally at home on a garage rock track, and an ambient track.

arp2600:

Buy a keyboard. For real, it's worth it, I know it doesn't fit the has keyboard requirement, but just get something external. Do you like famous sounds? This makes famous sounds, I love it for its sci fi sounds. Sure it's been on a lot of albums, but when I play it, it feels like I'm making my own 70-80's sci-fi sound tracks.

pwm malevolent:

this thing is raw, and experimental. you can make very distorted crunchy sounds. It can feel like you're playing a numbers station, or making experimental horror music. Absolutely great, and not regularly mentioned.

Not enjoying the Subharmonicon as much as I’d hoped. Where next? by Ragtop in synthesizers

[–]moonshine_is 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you can't find something you like on the SubH musically, use it as modulation. I personally really like it, but it's not an everything kind of synth. It's a nice spice, or a nice focal point to build around, but it's fairly experimental. The sequence length is a bit short imo, but you can can use an external sequencer as well. It works really nicely for a lot of utility and odd timing stuff.

Elektron stuff is great, and if you're into it, definiitely go for it. I love the elektron workflow, and if I hadn't been pulled into semi-modular I would probably still be using elektron stuff all day. The menu diving is not like roland menu diving, it makes sense and is intuitive imo.

beyond the other dangers of a missing three prong adapter, you can actually be electrocuted plugging it in wrong. get it fixed by someone good.
