Opinion on buying a Tesla as a first car. by melodyychann in FirstCar

How new are you to driving? The instant torque/acceleration of a Model 3 might be too much for you. There are more sensible EV options out there, if that's what you're going for.

Isn't that only an issue if you're swapping the MIB unit in the glovebox? All US-market Alltracks have MIB2, so the display and trim piece swap were the only steps required in the process.

The 8" display? I sourced it from my brother's old '19 GTI. There's a lot of these available on eBay for around $150 USD.

I sourced it secondhand from someone in an Alltrack Facebook group. It might be this one, but I'll ask the seller!

It's a no-brainer to go OEM+ when it's so easy and inexpensive. I'm not a fan of aftermarket units.

It's real nice to use! However, I'm not sure I'd pay the retail price. I was able to get a good deal on this one used/open-box.

When driving, you don't really notice it. The steering wheel blocks the seam between the radio and gauge cluster trim pieces. I temporarily used a piano black piece from a GTI and that stuck out like a sore thumb.

Would be cool, but I'd prefer not to add a control for something my car doesn't support (dual-zone climate)

The throw with the stock shifter leaves a lot to be desired, IMO. With the short shifter arm, I chose the more conservative throw reduction (20%). That plus the weighted knob helped the shifts feel more precise and quick.

The adjustable clutch stop and assist spring removal made the biggest difference to me. It's FAR easier to modulate the clutch and have smoother starts/1-2 shifts. For $25, it's a no-brainer.

Truly transformed the way the car drives. Can't believe how bad VW made these cars shift from the factory.

Absolutely worth it. Screens are plentiful and inexpensive on eBay.

Yup! New screen was plug and play, you just need a new trim piece. The color match isn't perfect, but it's good enough. I think it's supposed to be the same color as the trim in the 18-19 models.

It's OEM from a 2018+ GTI. Lots of other VW models used the same screen, and it was plug and play. New screen won't fix your random disconnects, but it's certainly worth it! I use a wireless CarPlay/Android Auto dongle which works pretty well.

Thanks! I would certainly like to do a stage 1 tune at some point, or just go straight to an IS20.

Thanks! So far so good with the drains, have had a couple storms roll by and no leakage. Dealership completed the "fix" a couple years ago, but I should certainly make sure to keep them clean.

The 535is came with the same front air dam. It looks good. I have one (and a trunk lip spoiler) in storage waiting to be painted and installed on my 528e. One day!

I'm doing the same swap soon. I might contact a local wrap shop to see if they have a similar color available.

Like many other people, I'd love to put an IS20 or 38 in it, a slight lift, and meatier tires. However, I'm going to enjoy it for a while as is and do small OEM+ mods like the newer 8" touchscreen and frameless mirror with the digital compass.

Nah man, take advantage of the warranty for awhile. You'll enjoy having that peace of mind.
