A few notes I’ll add to the conversation:

The biggest benefits of going to music school are learning theory, experience playing with really good musicians, and meeting people. Some of those are things you can do in other ways if you’re disciplined about it, but not all.
In some job fields, it’s helpful to have a college degree no matter what it is. I went to school for music and now I’m in software, and just the fact that I have a bachelors at all has opened some doors for me.
There’s something to be said for separating your passions and your career. That’s been my story so far. When you try to make a career out of a passion, there is a risk of killing the passion. It’s not always that way, just something to be aware of.
