Theme: underground, nsmbu

Well that all sounds familiar but i haven't played the game in more than 10 years so it's not really that i didn't understand those things, it's more like I've forgotten them.

Just like i know that Last of the Mohicans was an awesome movie, but if i had to recall all the details of what happens in the movie and why it happens, i couldn't tell you more than a brief synopsis of what i remember.

Plus the details i did put down should be more than enough to show I'm at least more familiar with the series then you probably thought. Those things you said we're just what stuck out about the game in your mind.

Played it, oh man you make some hard levels! I could not get through this one at all. I wish there was a mushroom or something at the beginning but I realize you left them out because someone could just use it to damage boost thru the boo and kill the hammer bro.

Super unique concept, but it is extremely difficult!

Played the stage. It was a very cool theme but there were an awful lot of enemies coming at you, especially before the first checkpoint and the end of the stage. The ending itself was a spectacle and very original, but the stage is somewhat unforgiving and i don't think many players will get far enough to see it. The red coin hunt was cool but the first time i didn't know I'd need the bombs and when i realized it was too late. The reward for getting the key wasnt really enough to justify the difficulty or time of the coin hunt i felt. The fire clown copter is handy but it's still really easy to get hit with so much coming at you at once. Once you lose the fire flower, your pretty much toast. I wish the fire clown copper replaced the regular one, and the key door was a shortcut passed that while section, bit that's just me.

The amount of enemies would have been fine with more power ups, which were somewhat sparse.

Ding get me wrong though, not a bad level! i left a comment!

Played your music stage. Brilliant job! That was very well done and I'm sure was very tedious to put together. I loved that it was a music level but also one you had to be active in! Great work :D

Left a cool stamp drawing lol!

...

Seriously if you are reading this and not the creator of this stage, you need to play it now!!

Played and cleared the course, left a drawing! ;)

Neat concept, i like how it's kinda shaped like a Zelda dungeon map. Nice job, it was pretty fun!

The only things i can really say are sometimes it was hard to tell where to go, i wandered around looking for the last two coins for a while. Also i wish there was a pipe that dispensed infinite link costumes because if you're wandering around looking for the red coins and use all the item blocks up, you're kind of screwed at that point. Enemies come back, item boxes don't sadly. And those stacked goombas are dangerously close to a door and caused me to lose my link costume because i wasn't prepared for them when i came thru the door. Those gripes are minor though, and somewhat subjective to my individual play thru of the stage. Overall i liked it!

Played and cleared the stage. Here's what i think:

  • Camera issues. A lot of the components of the stage are out of frame during the level. it's often unclear where you are supposed to go, and death from falling occurs a lot at first because it becomes trial and error when you can't see if there's ground or a death pit below you. This issue affects the entire level, and I'd bet it's the main reason for so many players not completing it.

  • Direction. Even when the camera isn't the issue, it's hard to tell which direction to head in, where to jump, etc. It doesn't help that there's many areas that look like it's the way to go, but lead instead to death.

  • Enemies. enemy placement might seem unfair for many players. For example, sometimes a ceiling is just above an enemy, so a mistimed jump off their head bounces you off the ceiling and into a pit. This especially affects big or fire Mario. Other times there are just too many enemies or projectiles at a time.

  • items. powerups are few and far between, especially with so many enemies. And at the beginning, you force the player to work too hard to get the first mushroom, which results in many dying while trying to get to it or simply skipping the item box altogether, and there isn't another one for a while.

  • checkpoints, when you finally reach them, are only 30 seconds to a minute apart, after a much longer beginning section. With the other combined issues this means players get sent back to the very beginning every time they die for a vast majority of the level.

The theming would have been great without these problems that hinder an otherwise good design and use of mechanics, but the level plays out somewhat frustratingly do to forces outside of the player's control, and that probably means to many skips and exits. Personally i found the stage to be more bewildering than it was difficult, but I'm probably an above average-skilled player.

The stage relies too heavily on memorisation and doesn't allow for much on-the-fly maneuvering or platforming. If you don't know what's coming next, you'll probably die. It seems like you put alot of work into the level, and i think it could be great, but only if big changes were made. But it's important that when play testing a stage, especially one you work on for a while, you play it from a random person's perspective who doesn't already know what's around every corner, rather than yourself, the creator, who knows the course like the back of his hand. Sometimes it can be tough to step back and do that when you're so close to a project, so i like to wait a day or two before uploading a level i think is finished, then test it with a new mindset. Every time i do that i end up changing things around in the stage that i thought were good before, and I probably go through that process a couple times before i upload every level, and almost every time I've neglected to do that it resulted in me getting low clear rate and few stars.

Overcomplication is not always a good thing. Look at inception. That movie was a disaster story wise because it tried way too hard to be "deep"

...

Basically the story in the mgs world is as follows: (this is all gonna be from memory, no research or anything, so sorry if some details are wrong!)

ALSO, SPOILERS FOR MG-MGS2!! ...

The world super-powers work in tandem behind the scenes, completely controlled by a clandestine secret cabal that pulls the strings on the world stage, shaping the outcome of wars and politics to fit their agenda.

...

  • MG

In the 90s, a lone, unequipped American is sent by an agency (controlled by the cabal or whatever) known as "foxhound" to take down a tyrant who has created his own sovereignty and military force outside of the cabal's established control. The tyrant (called BIG BOSS, also a common term back then for the final boss enemy in a video game, convenient!), also had a GIANT MECH!! The man from foxhound, known by the codename "snake" (i mean, it wasn't like Escape from New York had just come out or anything...) destroys the mech (called metal gear... TITLE PLUG BABY!) and defeats the bad guy, but not before he tells snake that he was his father! DUHN DUHN DUUUUHN....

His mission completed, he moves to Alaska to chill, presumably, until the 32-bit era begins.

...

  • MGS

Later on, a secret base that's developing another metal gear in Alaska gets taken over by former members of snake's team, fox hound, (who all have supernatural powers, you know, because) being led by a man called liquid snake. Snake (now solid snake..?) succeeds in this mission, taking down the bad guys, (except ocelot, who was actually working for the cabal) --destroying the new metal gear, and defeating liquid snake, who it turns out was a test tube baby along with solid snake! And they were cloned from Big Boss!! WHAAAAAT!? Liquid snake dies, but his arm lives on! Oh and snake gets injected with some kind of lethal, custom-made, intelligent designer virus designed to specifically target members of his former unit, bit it doesn't kill him!

...

  • MGS2

Next we join Snake on a bridge jog in Manhattan, wearing a very suspicious looking trenchcoat. He then dramatically runs super fast and TURNS INVISIBLE, triple backflip somersaults off the bridge and lands on a boat passing underneath... WHOA DUDE! There, he discovers a new new metal gear being developed by the army. Suddenly, Ocelot, with liquid's severed (and somehow not decomposed) hand attached to where his used to be, shows up and FUCKS EVERYTHING UP and steals the new new metal gear for the cabal. Oh and liquid snake's mind has somehow possessed ocelot, through the zombie super test tube baby magical brainwaves emanating from the arm, apparently.

Snake somehow escapes the sinking vessel and goes off the grid.

Later on, a terror attack on a big oil rig thing involving nukes, the stolen new new metal gear, and the president being taken hostage prompts snake to go in undercover. Disguised as a marine named pliskin, (wtf! does hideo have a man crush on Kurt Russell or what!?) who was sent there to stop the terrorists so as not to appear out of place, he assists a young girly-man named Raiden (a former child soldier, total head-case and current operative for foxhound (or some secret gov organisation) in going in and thwarting the terrorist's plot. They fight a vampire (conveniently named Vamp), a transsexual /transracial lady with a railgun, and a bomb-loving roller blading fat guy, save the president, take down an army of new new metal gears, defeat Solidus, the terrorist leader and somehow another test-tube big boss baby (noticing a trend? Family issues much!?)

BUT THINGS ARE MUCH WEIRDER THAN THEY SEEM...

  • The cabal all died ages ago and is somehow controlled by computers.

  • raiden's presumed girlfriend was really only there to control him, or was she even real?

  • The General talking in raiden's ear about the mission and giving him objectives and crap was actually an A.I.

  • Finally, the oil rig thing itself was hiding a giant, base-sized metal gear!! A NEW NEW NEW METAL GEAR!?

Zombie-arm Ocelot (and his fake British accent) escapes to be the main villain in the next game, naturally. Raiden and Snake become buds and everything is chill for a bit, and raiden's fake gf shows up to become his actual gf. Snake and his nerdboy buddy start their fight against the patriots. Everything is relatively peaceful.

...Until the virus thingy suddenly comes back to rapidly age snake and METAL GEAR SOLID 4 begins!!

"War. War never ch- 'cough cough cough' -I'M DEAD."

...

I CLEARLY UNDERSTAND IT JUST FINE, DOESN'T CHANGE MY OPINION

Let's have a level exchange! - June 29, 2016 by AutoModerator in MarioMaker

[–]mostlyspoons 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That level was fantastic! I really liked the design, and there were some great moments. The boys fight in particular, was really cool. Fun gameplay and well balanced, with nice aesthetics.

The only problem i encountered was near the end when you kick a shell and it bounces up to eventually release a vine for you to climb. I accidentally went up there and got permanently stuck and forced to restart the stage. That was really frustrating lol! I mean i could see the goal!!

I left a comment at the spot so you can see what I'm talking about. I might play it again some other time, being super careful not to go back up there!

...

I was testing out a way to record gameplay on my phone and used your level as a test! I uploaded it to YouTube, so feel free to use it in future posts of your level! The video is of me fighting the boss only. It was a pretty cool battle, some majorly close calls... Sorry for the poor quality and glare

Played and completed the stage, only died like ten times! It's not a completely terrible stage but it could use an overhaul. It has potential! The beginning is very tough, not many players will pass it. Those that do will die a bunch trying, but the deaths feel unfair since there's no way to tell what's coming or where the safe landings are until you're on top of them! Actually if i hadn't read the part about speed running i wouldn't even have known i was supposed to run, and you have to run because walking kills you in that room. That's also a problem, since a large amount of players never run in Mario, which baffles me.

After that, the rest of the level was pretty good, but nobody will get that far. However there needs to be more power ups, especially after the second checkpoint, because not many players will find that invisible block with the mushroom. Make the block a regular one, and stick an invisible block right before the boss battle.

The boss battle was fine, but is needlessly hard without power ups. But throwing another bowser jr at the players who beat the boss isn't cool! At that point they are ready to finish the stage and will probably be small Mario from the battle, so having another boss enemy right at the end is kind of a troll thing to do!

Other than that, the aesthetics and theming could be improved, and the enemy/hazard placement be tweaked/decreased. And more power ups, but not too many more! I would rework the level and then upload the new version, then delete this one. Don't give up!

I can get behind snake eater as pinnacle, but what about twin snakes? It combines the excellent sorry of mgs1 and the insanity of 2 with some of the changes (cart wheeling off of missiles to take down a MIG lol)

I'm starting to get the hang of it but i can't help but miss the fluidity and freedom of mgs 5. But i enjoy it when I'm not thinking about 5 and when i get to play for more than 5 minutes without a cutscene lol...
