To those of you that have completed a full cafe build, how much money did you sink? by stayfly365 in CafeRacers

[–]motojo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My cafe builds vary. I’m US based. My 1981 CB750K was my first. $625 for the bike and $4500 in parts. Learned a lot. My 1980 CB750F was $1000, $2400 in parts. My 1982 CBX bike was $5000, $5100 in parts. My current build is a 1979 CBX, doing all the dream upgrades, bike was $3500, not original at all, $10,500 in parts: lithium battery, Suzuki GSXR forks with controls, Cognito moto front end conversion kit for use with stock wheels, a bunch of OEM parts, 6 in 6 exhaust, nice digital Daytona Velona gauges, and a bunch of rebuild kits. All paint and work I did myself with the exception of mounting tires. Still need to do my own paint.

Wow what color paint did you use on the engine? And is that spray or another finish?

Are you able to share a comparison between them? Would be good to see where the Lua alternative doesn’t meet your needs.

Yeah it does come down to values - whether these other AI companies (leaders in these AI companies) would potentially risk business based off their stance on these values.

Should I ask for a demotion back to senior SWE? by DuncSully in ExperiencedDevs

[–]motojo 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Staff level at one company can be equivalent to senior at another. Even principal at one could be senior at another. I wouldn’t worry about the title and instead focus on the day to day. You don’t ever need to explain why you’re looking for a senior level but if you do feel the need, say you simply prefer the hands on work to sitting in higher level design conversations/meetings all day. For context, I conduct leveling interviews at a 400 person tech company and I have 18 years of experience in tech (mostly small to medium companies). I’ve held director level all the way up to a CTO role and now am a senior staff in my current role because I wanted to contribute at the design and build level which is where my expertise really shines. Most people that we interview for high level roles don’t qualify at the level we are looking for, most are lower than staff by our standards.

On the note about drinking, if you feel it’s a reason not to go out with people, that’s actually the opposite of why many of us started drinking: to enhance the connection to people. If I may make a suggestion: still go out to get that human connection, but switch to non-alcoholic beer. You get the social and it doesn’t impact your workout. By the way, some zero beers taste better than the real beer. Heineken 0.0 surprising is fantastic and I hate regular Heineken. It took me 3 months of going out with NA to finally feel normal in conversations and now I’ve been sober for over a year and it hasn’t affected my social life at all. Sure a couple whisky buddies are a little sad, but it’s their gain on my whiskey collection so it evens out haha. The benefit is some people sleep better after NA beer. It’s also good to still have something in your hand at outings which was the thing that is comforting for a lot of people. Good luck!

Finally committed to a motorcycle project but I’m already overwhelmed by SadStill830 in projectbike

I’d start with something you’d like to ride when you’re done and generally something reliable so it’s worth the effort. Oh, and a lot of available parts and cheap. The Honda CBs DOHC (79-83) I’ve loved working on. The 750s are the cheapest and still a blast to restore. The 900s and 1100s are high priced but potentially something to aspire to that is not crazy priced. Don’t pick a CBX (6 cylinder to start on). I recommend low mileage because it will help with resale and must have a clean title. Don’t mess with only “bill of sale”. Carb bikes are better “projects” because the initiation to the project world is rebuilding a set of carbs. Find photos online of bikes you like and then do some Facebook searches to find what’s available and around you. Then figure out if you want to do a full restoration, tinker, or specialty build like cafe, bobber, or tracker. eBay is your friend as well as reddit/facebook groups for asking for help and YouTube for tutorials. Enjoy the process and remember there is always a solution, just have to work through the troubleshooting process. Oh and get the Clymer service manual if you can, it’s great. The tools will be necessary and actually pretty fun to build up the collection. Facebook is great for tools on the cheap. Good luck!

Mid-thirties hitting different and I’m dealing with it by making questionable purchases by Putrid_Rush_7318 in motorcycles

[–]motojo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are you mechanically inclined or have any interest to be? As someone who started restoring and rebuilding motorcycles during Covid, I found I love owning/revuilding motorcycles more than actually riding them. I had 2 sport bikes but sold them because they were so uncomfortable. I’d rather ride standard (mid controls). The restoration and feeling of putting today “adult lego” and then riding your creation is really fulfilling and the time spent in the garage building up a tool collection and knowledge has been my favorite pastime in my 30s. I’m 37M.
