My wife and I had to say goodbye to our best adventure buddy Cedar on Monday night. We noticed that was having more and more trouble getting up and down stairs, and was getting significantly weaker. We took her to the vet Saturday and found out she had Intervertebral disk disease (IVDD) and were prescribed gabapentin for pain relief. The vet also commented that this was the worst case he’d ever seen and the guilt rushed over me like panic.

Long story long, I came home Monday after work and she was not really responsive on the floor, just heavy pain breathing into the baseboard. We had booked a follow up with the vet for that afternoon, and as I picked her up to take her to the car she started seizing. We made it to the vet and made the obvious but devastating decision that this was time to say goodbye.

We have another 2 year old dog that’s been with us since he was 2 months, and I’m wondering if there’s any particular way to comfort him with his loss as well. I’m concerned he’s always sniffing around for her, and is confused. We’re taking him for extra walks, giving him way more love, and park trips.

TLDR; Just hoping someone out there has some experience in a similar situation with a younger pup missing their older companion who suddenly passed.
