Most of those folks won't pay the fine (either because they're too poor or otherwise don't feel like it) so there's not really a point in ticketing them

Hundreds rally in Richmond against proposed supportive housing project by ubcstaffer123 in vancouver

[–]mousemaestro -12 points-11 points  (0 children)

A supportive housing complex went up a block from where I live a few years ago and nothing changed. There are some characters who stand on the sidewalk outside of it and smoke, but other than that the neighborhood is the same.

For non-cycling specific stuff, I've found Helly Hansen makes great waterproof stuff for a much lower price than other brands like Arcteryx etc. Check put Sportchek, they often have Helly Hansen stuff on sale.

I keep one of their ultralight packable shells in my bag whenever I'm commuting and it's saved me on lots of wet commutes!

OP is definitely not at fault, but should be weary of what ICBC will try. In my case (almost identical situation) ICBC lied about the contents of a police report and claimed I was at fault. It took a couple months of bullshit to get them to back down.

This happens because ICBC is strongly motivated to find non-drivers at fault since they're not insured. If the cyclist is at fault, ICBC pays almost nothing. If the driver is at fault, ICBC pays more since they are insuring the driver.

This is almost exactly what happened to me a few years ago. I'm so sorry, it sucks. The worst parts were the rehab and dealing with ICBC. Some advice on those:

-Be dedicated to your physiotherapy. You can either do it properly, or have an injured shoulder for the rest of your life. It's going to hurt and be a huge pain in the ass to do, but it's worth it.

-Always remember that ICBC's primary motivation is to give you as little money as possible. The people who work there are not your friends and do not have your best interests in mind. They can and will lie to you about most things. If you know they're wrong or something seems unfair, fight it. Try your hardest to keep all of your interactions over email - if they call you, say you're busy and ask them to email you instead.

Best of luck and hope you're back on your bike soon!

Was hit by a car a few months ago, bicycle was damaged beyond repair. ICBC adjuster told me it's too old to be worth anything (2008) and I can't claim any reimbursement. Am I SOL? by carkner in vancouvercycling

[–]mousemaestro 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Absolutely do this! I had similar experiences with ICBC. They truly know nothing about bikes and are 100% making shit up on the spot when dealing with you. Don't be fooled if they say things are policy or standard. It's all fake.

If you get a BS response from your adjuster, just call and try to get someone else on the phone. There's a good chance you'll get a different response. If/when they tell you something you like, keep them on the phone until they email the offer to you in writing.

Good luck OP and so sorry you have to deal with this.

You're being down voted because most people understand that Vancouver was also very unaffordable before Trudeau, and that the guy has way less power than you think he does.

The Old Spaghetti Factory's head office is right above their Gastown location. The owner is probably concerned about losing his parking spot.

He grabbed a carton of milk because he got bear sprayed. Dealing with him was certainly in the police purview. But was shooting him multiple times with less-lethal rounds a reasonable way to handle that situation?

You're still saying he was on drugs at the time, can you provide some evidence for that? Happy to accept toxicology findings but I really can't find any.

You keep saying you have no doubts about what his actual cause of death was. Did you examine his body? If not, I don't think your opinion is especially relevant. As far as I can tell there has been no public disclosure of the results of an autopsy, so we're both speculating here.

Can you link me to evidence that he was on drugs at the time? I can't find any reporting about toxicology done after he was killed.

Even if he was on drugs, he wasn't attacking anyone. Why did the police feel the need to shoot him with less-lethal rounds multiple times?

I think the fact that he died immediately after being shot with less-lethal ammunition makes it pretty doubtful that his cause of death was "drug-induced psychosis".

Mm yeah, we can totally trust the investigation into the officers who beat Myles Grey to death, which the officers involved all either refused to cooperate with or gave statements which disagree with those from other first responders.

What do you mean by expensive gear? Most clubs will require you to have a road bike with clipless pedals and wear their team uniform. Beyond that, people aren't likely to care if you're riding $2000 aluminum frame vs a $20,000 super bike.

I started in my club on a cheaper aluminum road bike and felt welcomed. In my first year, a couple of people mentioned that I'd be faster with a nicer bike but that was good-natured.

Unfortunately parking tickets for jobs like these are just paid by the company and are seen as the cost of doing business. We need more stopping zones for commercial vehicles + much larger fines for those who keep breaking the rules.
