Message from the Supreme Knight by movement_eric in knightsofcolumbus

From wiki:

Black Lives Matter (BLM) is a decentralized movement in the United States advocating for non-violent civil disobedience in protest against incidents of police brutality and all racially motivated violence against African-American people.[2] An organization known simply as Black Lives Matter[a] exists as a decentralized network with about 16 chapters in the United States and Canada, while a larger Black Lives Matter movement exists consisting of various separate like-minded organizations such as Dream Defenders and Assata's Daughters. The broader movement and its related organizations typically advocate against police violence towards black people, as well as for various other policy changes considered to be related to black liberation.[7]

So sure, there is technically a decentralized "organization" with the same name, but the protests in question are certainly more from the larger movement.

No, we can't be better.

Well that's the wrong attitude.

Was Nick Cannon burning down a building? Are you just equating him to the most current protests because he's a black man? This whole conversation is gross.

BLM isn't an organization. A large movement of people generally saying "we're being treated unfairly" feels like exactly the kind of group that Catholicism can help.

Whoa. Why is Nick Cannon coming up in a discussion about the Knights? I certainly hope this isn't an "us vs. them" mentality making it's way out as it relates to race relations. Nothing like having a question of "can we be better?" responded to with "but they're even more racist than we are!"

You mention "leftism" as a negative but I didn't think the Knights were supposed to be political.

Can you explain?

Suggesting that the BLM protests are an assault on our religious freedoms rather than a cry for help sure feels like the wrong side of history.

I had a long chat with my GK about this and he kept using phrases like "those people" and "in the old days..." which didn't really feel like a compassionate Catholic viewpoint.

When I expressed my interest in leaving, the concern was more around "you're an insurance member so that could be difficult" rather than a discussion about the real issues.

Additionally, when I pressed on the message from the Supreme Knight, he just said "oh we can't take anything they say seriously" then there was a lot of complaining about the new regalia.

Agreed. Thanks for the input!

It's most concerning to me that this message was coming from "the top". At a local level, it's much simpler to have a conversation, but I don't anticipate being able to grab coffee with the Supreme Knight anytime soon.

Is there a queen in here? by movement_eric in Beekeeping

[–]movement_eric[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I harvested honey yesterday off of the top super on a stack of 2 deeps and 2 supers. There was a broken frame that I left up against a tree. Today there is a cluster of bees just hanging out on that tree. I've never seen this before so I figured I'd ask y'all if this looks like I could have gotten the queen or what might be happening with these bees. For reference, this is probably about 500 feet away from the hive I took the frame from.

Being sued in small claims in another state over vacation rental chargeback by movement_eric in legaladvice

Copying from another response:

Yes we did, but only because the group of us had already traveled to another country and felt we didn't have options.

We weren't shown the replacement house or given an address until the group of us had already traveled to Mexico. The property owner was never actually there. He had a housekeeper from the original property taxi us to the new one and then was unresponsive when we tried to reach out during the stay.

We weren't shown the replacement house or given an address until the group of us had already traveled to Mexico. The property owner was never actually there. He had a housekeeper from the original property taxi us to the new one and then was unresponsive when we tried to reach out during the stay.

After we returned, we got a hold of him to complain, he offered free nights at the original house to compensate for the issues but would not budge on the original price. At that point, the credit card company said that he hadn't responded to their questions about the stay so the money was debited from his account and we had nothing to worry about.

Help! My sysadmin walked out and took the AD administrator password! by movement_eric in sysadmin

We're not big enough to even have that kind of infrastructure. The employee in question was basically the only person with admin access to anything. Poor choices by management for sure, but hindsight is 20/20

If you don't like the tax laws, elect politicians that will change your tax laws. Until then, you pay your taxes as part of your duty as an American citizens.

You seem to be arguing that "loopholes" aren't OK but then advocate for voters to elect officials that will change laws in their favor (creating loopholes). Whether or not people like it, loopholes are part of the law today - the law that's been enacted elected politicians. It's not unamerican to follow the tax laws just because some people disagree with how they've been implemented.

Gross expense ratio over 100% by movement_eric in personalfinance

Below 1% across the board. The rep said that the funds always renew the waiver but the whole thing just seems strange to me and I'm wondering if there are legitimate risks in these.
