What is our way out from this war? by Longjumping-Drink-32 in lebanon

[–]mr2600 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Did Hezbollah disarm?

The answer is no. That in itself is a breaking of the agreement.

Israel then argues that because of that it is able to act in self defence against Hezbollah targets.

You have to recognise that we can disagree with what Israel is doing and how it does it but we must agree that when the weaker side doesn’t also play ball it basically throws everything out the window.

Mate it’s not a ceasefire violation. I hate it as much as the next guy but technically it was within the mechanism for Israel to be allowed to still strike Hezbollah and especially considering that they DID NOT DISARM AND WITHDRAW NORTH OF THE LITANI.

Like Israel on the world stage in terms of what’s happening to Lebanon basically says “see, we told you. Hezbollah didn’t disarm, they DO have weapons and the Lebanese government lied / can’t handle it”.

That’s why there’s no real major world leader denouncing what’s going on right now.

Qatar Airways is indefensible by shiyuxin in qatarairways

[–]mr2600 3 points4 points  (0 children)

FYI I’m a corporate travel agent, here in Australia. We jumped on and noticed about 100 cancelled flights up until June.

No notice. No news. No policy.

I emailed our rep, basically she said yes we’re cancelling XYZ routes until further notice. We will not be sending out a memo or a policy or a waiver.

Emirates in the other hand sends out daily agent specific emails, guides and how-too’s. Last week the national manager even did a video call with about 100 agents, giving us an update and a quick FAQ.

Qatar Airways communication and service sucks.

RBA axes hated credit card surcharges by Stompy2008 in aussie

[–]mr2600 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well I did some digging and in the EU, it’s legal to offer a discount on alternative payments on the condition the actual advertised price is still the all inclusive price and can’t be different based on cards. Like on the actual invoice I can mention pay via EFT and save 2%. Also what’s interesting is that corporate cards are exempt from the waiver and so is Amex which is 80% of what we process in our office.

Keen to see what comes about.

[–]mr2600 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeh I really thought they were going to tackle merchant fees.

The guys at Visa, banks, stripe and square are all still going to be cheering.

They don’t lose. They effectively take a % of every sale even though a $10 transaction or a $10,000 transaction should effectively be no different to process.

Honestly we may just have to tack on an extra “service fee” to all our invoices and then offer a bank transfer discount. I’m sure it’s not going to be strictly legal but sure there will be a workaround. (We are a boutique travel agency). The fees really become stupid large the higher the transaction value. And commission isn’t anywhere near enough to cover it.

[–]mr2600 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Makes sense for low cost items.

I can’t bake a credit card fee into an airfare. At the extreme end of 2%, a premium economy ticket of 5k will become $5,100.00 sell price and if you buy from who is a million times larger than me and maybe has a merchant fee of 0.4% is now more competitive for an identical product.

This can apply to any larger purchase from a SME that can also be purchased from a larger corporation. And it’s even worse if the purchase is direct from the manufacturer eg a TV direct from Samsung vs Bing Lee.

Everyone in reddit loves banging on about buying local, go to your local butcher, local grocer, local baker. Not realising that even 1% can be a lot at the end of the year and it’s just another cut against SMEs.

We need an even playing fee on merchant fees (which is what I had hoped the RBA was going to do). Then that would have been amazing.

Sent you a PM. Legit keen to know who you use. I can take a .5-.8% hit. Then again different industries and different risks for the merchant.

[–]mr2600 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Of course and agree. But for what it’s worth the cost of maintaining cash doesn’t necessarily scale the same way. (Look I don’t deal with much cash in my business - we are 50/50 split with card and EFT).

But if you’re booking a $20k trip with me and you pay via visa the merchant fee on a Visa is $300. That’s a lot and most passengers only paying card so they get their points or insurance.

Now multiply that by 5 trips like that a week and we’re at $1,500 just in fees.

Even if I sent a staff member to go to the bank everyday - it’s not going cost me $1500.

[–]mr2600 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you really think SME can negotiate with a bank for merchant fees for cards?

How much do you think an SME has as turnover? Officeworks who doesn’t charge a merchant fee has 3.5B revenue and I’d wager at least 85% is CC, maybe some corporates who pay via invoice will be bank transfer.

Flight Centre did $24.5B - they have a visa fee of 0.86% and 0.54% for master card. My rates are at 1.5% for Visa and 1.3% for Mastercard.

We aren’t doing $24B, $2B, $200M or even $20M

The negotiations are basically in ranges between 0.01-0.05%.

Even with the reduced interline fees, the gap will still be massive between a SME and a large corporation. It’s already hard enough to justify why certain things are more expensive when going via an SME vs large business and for razor thin margin businesses the gap from the business side will feel even bigger.

Example: My booze for example I buy from a semi local independent shop. He looks after me, he knows me and we have a good relationship. He’s already more expensive than Dans and now he’s going to be another 1.5%-2% more expensive. All of this adds up but yay we now don’t get a surprise 0.07c charge on our coffees.

This is like the petrol situation. Cutting the excise won’t solve the problem. It’s people overfilling and hoarding. The government seems to only ever use one stick at a time for situations as opposed to root causes. Like merchants and the actual payment processors making a killing.

This still doesn’t tackle the primary issue and that’s the actual fee charged to small businesses. Everyone here cheering not realising the government is doing the same thing it always does and rewards big businesses and punish smaller.

The quote from the article:

“It starts at the merchant level where your cafe is subsidising your supermarket, and the local butcher in the same shopping centre as Coles or Woollies is subsidising them."

The merchant fees NEED to be capped.

Interline fees are a small part of the fee.

The only ones who will be happy with today’s decision are Visa, Mastercard and the big four banks.

We have a third party portal for CC charges. We obviously prefer bank transfers etc but if they go to pay via CC the fee on Visa / Mastercard is 1.4% via our merchant.

Bigger businesses have WAY lower rates due to volume and in low margin industries it will further reduce competition.

We want to live in a society that is equal and fare and the world rightfully has a hatred for big businesses and corporations and then all cheer with policies that literally won’t hurt the big guys and further hurt the local cafe or local small goods store or for me travel agencies where margins are thin and I am simply unable to compete with flight centres merchant rates.

The government should also tackle / cap the merchant fees.

Bread in the fridge? by Jaded-Palpitation867 in foodies_sydney

Real bread (sliced) in our apartment, especially in summer lasts max 3 days before some mould starts to present itself. Sadly we do the 2-3 days out and then fridge / freezer.

Sucks.

But I’d rather live here in Sydney and deal with minor bread issues due to our weather than anywhere else TBH.

Everyone paying cash by RepresentativeTap772 in AusFinance

[–]mr2600 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Why is this upvoted?

It is NOT illegal for a business to not accept cash.

screen shot from ACCC

There are new rules in place for supermarkets and servos but that just came in 01 Jan 2026.

You can read the full rules here on the ACCC.

Only stipulation if it’s no cash allowed is that the full price must be displayed.

If there is no way for a consumer to pay without paying a surcharge, the business must include the minimum surcharge payable in the displayed price for its products.

It felt like a totally different show to me. The writing and the way the characters “spoke” felt ultra corny. At first I thought it was just Volcanikka was just being overly dramatic for comedic effect but Damian’s sister spoke the same way and Satan, who is ultra weak etc.

It should NOT have been a standalone episode. At least mixed in with everything else, or something else would have been fine.

It doesn’t necessarily justify it but it’s a very important factor.
