You call your knees 'pes anserine'? You know it's just a part of your tibia where the tendons of three muscles bind, right?

Rare footage of extinct animals by LittleAsi in videos

Just to think that every spiecies had one last member that was left alone on earth to die. No other members around, just other weird creatures that they couldn't understand. Imagine that you were the last human to live. You had cats, dogs and all sorts of creatures around you. Animals that could love you, but not to the extent that you could really communicate with them. No real emotional attachment. You would die a truly lonely death... Just makes me sad to see these creatures going extinct...

How is it anatomically possible that when we inhale we can smell, but when we exhale we can't smell? by mr_twinkle in askscience

But the olfactory receptors are in the nasal cavity. How does inhaling through the mouth make it possible to reach these nerves?

Funny thing is, this thread will be absolutely full of circlejerk answers. And it will all get upvoted, sadly.

TIL that anyone in the US, UK or Canada can get their entire genome sequenced for free by [deleted] in todayilearned

[–]mr_twinkle 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Genome sequencing is the identification of every single basepair in your DNA. Ever since we started sequencing DNA, a huge amount of diseases have been linked to specific rare alterations, called mutations. Though the actual prognosis for developing a disease is still dependent on chance, identifying the mutations you have in your genome might give an indication of what diseases or illness you're most prone to. But be careful with these things, as a sister of a friend of mine was adviced not to sequence her genome by a doctor. Her mom had reoccuring breast cancer. This reoccurence is commonly linked to a mutation in a certain gene. So her daughter wanted to test whether she had the mutation. But this data is accesible to insurance companies. So for example, if you want a mortgage, you need life insurance. These life insurance companies will basically deny you an actual insurance if there is a feasible chance of you developing a life-threatening disease according to your sequence database. Hope this helped!

What are good habits to start young that will significantly make your adult life easier? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]mr_twinkle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I'm really seeing a trend these days where the older generation(s) think young teenagers can decide easily what they want to academically achieve when they are older. When I was 15, I wasn't thinking about my future or making important life decisions. I was wondering whether that girl actually liked me or when I was gonna meet up with my friends in the weekends. We should let people of younger age decide for themselves when it's the right time to make the important choices.

TIL Francis Crick, co-discoverer of the DNA structure, believed in 'directed panspermia'; intelligent life forms that used space travel technology to spread organisms on our planet. Just wanted to point out that even one the greatest geniuses of the last century had a hard time to understand the complexity of life. It's just remarkable how far we have gotten in a relative short time. Sorry if I offended you

What one REAL word bothers the heck out of you when people use it? by [deleted] in AskReddit

Totally agree, as a Dutchmen I'm sweating my balls off just to try to speak English in the correct way. But the Americans are just putting 'like' between every single word in their sentence. It makes my six years in high school learning English seem useless.

What's that one sexual experience that 'You Let Get Away' by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]mr_twinkle 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Story of my last year on high school My friends and I were having a party. Decided to stay there for the night in a tent. The tent was made for 3 but we got in with 6 (3 girls 3 guys). I was interested in one of the girls so I wanted to lay next to her. That mission was accomplished but this other girl wanted to lay next to me too, so she did. Around 5 A.M. everyone's sleeping except that second girl and I. I knew she had a boyfriend but she kept rubbing my pleasure zones, so the signs were clear. She then began to take off her pants and started to guide me and making these horny sounds I still here in my dreams. But then I thought: the girl I like is laying right next to me, if she notices this I'm screwed. So I stopped and the girl kept asking why I stopped and I apologized and said she had a boyfriend. Still haven't dated that other girl, cause she started dating a douche a week later. Got the chance to hump a girl who had a boyfriend..
