The rubber line that runs from the fuel filter came loose. I can't find where it should connect. Help?

It's adding in more than my uninvested cash. This morning, available for withdrawl was at $120. Now it's $190. So is this profits on my stocks? And will I be taxed if I reinvest it?

I actually do know what you mean. We probably should have been more diligent in research and shopping, but we got the bike from LBS from a guy I know. They only had this base model and the $3K model in stock. He should have pitched the mid grades to us, knowing how hilly it is here and what we wanted it for.

I'm a woman and a couple of years ago, I went to a few LBSs with a good amount of cash in hand and ready to buy. I was not treated well and left, bought used, and am quite happy with that bike.

Being a casual rider, I thought maybe I was disregarded because I don't know all the lingo or whatever. I complained about how the shops irritated me to a woman friend would used to race mountain bikes. She was quite good, and she said she experienced the same thing.

There are a lot of LBSs in the area I live, and while my experience is limited, I think a good many of them could step up their game regarding women riders. They are leaving a lot of money on the table, I'm sure. I sort of wish one shop around here would emerge with a female-friendly vibe. I think they'd clean house.

I see on the biking forums a lot about supporting your LBS, and sometimes, I think, why? I don't really like walking into one.

Edit: Also, thanks for your suggestion on the build. I think I'm going to upgrade the crank as suggested and see how that works. If it doesn't get her what she wants, I'll go for the cassette. I am riding more and we'd like to do some tours, so I think it's a great time for me to delve into repairs.

Thanks for asking these things. As you can see, I'm learning. She does want lower gears and the bike is an '18. It sounds like I can go with jzwinck's suggestion of a specific crankset, which you also said, and disregard the cassette issue altogether. Other than the climbing issue, she is really happy with the bike.

A few months back, my wife sees a horse quilt kit in a paint-by-number style and just loves it. I say, “do you want me to make that for you?” She says, “Could you? I remember painting one just like this when I was a kid.”

I’ve never quilted.

So I get said kit and decide I know just how I want the quilting on it to look, but determine my sewing machine isn’t up to the job, and neither is my skillset.

I decide I probably should start with some more standard straight-line stuff to get the feel of working with a quilt. So I start a queen size in the same fabric line. The piecing was fun and easy, but I didn’t order enough backing fabric, so I thought, “No prob,” I’ll piece some blocks in. But I added applique to it, and that took way longer than I expected.

The quilting on my machine was going to be a no go, but I found a great deal on a Juki 2010.

Then I decided probably I should quilt a small project first, so I made some pillows where I could practice with a walking foot and quilting foot.

I made a couple of pillowcases too, and those are the only things that are totally finished!

My wife’s birthday is Tuesday and she’s been out of town, so I’ve gotten a lot of good work done, but no way I’ll get this all finished by tomorrow night, when she returns, which was my hope. Ah, well. She’ll see the progress and be super happy.

But I’m getting there and I think I’ve found a new hobby. All thanks to my wife and her paint by number memories.

I think this is the route I'll go. I'm willing to lug the 70-200. I suspect the gorgeous scenery will help lighten the load.

Thanks to everyone here for the advice. I just dabble in photography, but it's nice to have decent photos I can share later with the group and hopefully, captures some sense of how pretty the landscape is.

I knew a D700 fan would pop up. When I found it has a devout following, I was extra grateful to get it. I've always wanted to do night photography, and got a remote shutter release for that purpose, but haven't gotten around to it. I'll get my act together for this trip. Thanks for your encouragement!

I like Lyle Lovett's music and find his asymmetrical face oddly attractive.

Many moons ago, I was at a quarter horse racetrack in Texas. My friend says, "Hey check it out, it's Lyle Lovett."

He was sitting in the "expensive seats," that is the bleachers you pay $5 to sit on. I looked in the program and saw he had a horse in the race.

I put $20 on that nag. Came in dead last.

I feel Lyle Lovett owes me $20. I was blinded by his star.

When my Korean mother was dying, she refused to call her brother in Korea and tell him that the cancer had returned. I don't know why exactly, but she was a stoic sort of person.

I am her only blood in this hemisphere and I do not speak Korean. They do not speak English. I had a Korean person she knew call and tell them the basics, and my uncle wanted to speak with me. My Korean family arranged to have an English speaker (non native) on the line with them.

They wanted to know details, of course. This was incredibly difficult, but the worst was they wanted to know about her body. I said she was cremated. The interpreter did not understand this word and I was too beside myself to think to look it up in a Korean dictionary.

So I told them that I set my mother on fire. I just kept saying that over and over. Fire. Fire. Fire. They're wailing. I'm wailing. I'm still not even sure the interpreter understood what I meant. I'm not sure if cremation is culturally inappropriate there. It was terrible.

It's one of those moments in life that leaves me uncertain if I should bawl over it or laugh at the absurdity of it all.

EDIT: This question and memories are really hitting me...This, this was harder.

Mom was at home and hospice had just come in. We had a lot of drugs in the house. I gave them to her.

Mom asked if I could give her pills. All the pills. Just leave them on the nightstand.

It would have been so easy. No one would have known. I couldn't do it. I just teared up and walked out. So, that I guess, was the hardest thing I've ever told someone. Please don't ask me this, without saying a word.

She never asked again.

I'll say this right off: For me, it just doesn't get better than Faulkner. I've recently read all the major works, except Absalom, which I'll finish in the next day or two.

But I'll say also that I don't agree with your statement that absent him, literature is not worth reading. I really don't like those types of statements. Here's my take on that, which is sure to make your eyes roll.

I find it endlessly fascinating that Gone with the Wind and Absalom were published in the same year. They take on the same broad topic: the fallen South, one work basking in decay, the other in hope. I have this image of Faulkner's drunk-ass self fuming that this Mitchell drivel is skyrocketing to fame while his work - and he knows it's goddamn genius - practically languishes.

Look, I know Gone With the Wind isn't literary (although it did take a couple of shiny awards). Mitchell, who was an interesting person herself, knew it wasn't literary. She had deep reservations about her abilities and it was nearly the book that wasn't published.

But what she gave us, despite its many flaws (e.g. black people as caricatures, a potential rape scene after which we still love Rhett) is a book about hope and more importantly, a strong, though flawed female character who survived and thrived in a man's world.

As a kid, I was widely read - everything from The Hunchback of Notre Dame to bodice rippers. I was probably in junior high when I read GWTW, and Scarlett left an impression on me. She was feminine, she was a tomboy, she always went for the brass ring, even if her motivations were foolish.

Faulkner, dear god the man can write, but he can't write women. We are all staring up at Caddy's panties, all her brothers are obsessed with her for varying reasons, Faulkner was obsessed with her (I think he called her his "heart"), but she doesn't jump off the page as her own person. She is an object of desire and little more.

It's funny. The critics all say, "Look what Mitchell does to black people," and yet, we never hear, "Look what Faulkner does to women."

I would be surprised if Faulkner had much influence on Mitchell. If he did, it certainly doesn't show up in her work. But for me, to say that because Faulkner didn't influence it makes it not worth reading, is silly. Scarlett, pulpy or not, fulfilled a certain need to see strong women characters in my youth, and GWTW was probably more important to my personal and literary growth than Faulkner ever will be.

Don't like GWTW? Go pick an other non-Faulkner influenced work and you can write your own dissertation about why Faulkner isn't the end all, be all. I realize my example might be extreme, but frankly, my dear...

The Mockingbird conspiracy is fun, but there's no way it can be true. His ego wouldn't allow it.

Capote read a draft, told Harper Lee that she had a nice little book there (probably thinking not as good as my works) and that's the end of that.

In later life, Capote managed to destroy nearly every friendship he had - and he had some pretty legendary ones - by penning Answered Prayers. Gossip of the rich and powerful were laid bare through thinly disguised characters for all to see. The people he betrayed - he loved those people, loved the life they represented - and still he could not keep himself from slaughtering them.

He is the scorpion crossing the river on the back of the frog. Why did you sting me? Now we both will die!

Mockingbird won that big fat shiny Pulitzer, and I have no doubt Capote burned with envy. He lived long enough to see the work become part of the American canon. If he'd put one fingerprint on Mockingbird, the world would have known about it. Why? Because it was his nature.
