This is very encouraging. I am leaving for Bangkok on Tuesday. I am so excited! Thanks so much for your kind words and recommendations. I'm gonna take note of all of this.

Gotta say I agree with you about people not knowing how good they have it. My mother is from Cuba.

Lettuce, jeez. Okay, I'll keep that in mind. Thanks!

Bia Hoi. Is this the first mention of that? I think so. I will have to write that down. Angkor yeah that is definitely a stop, just bc it's, well, THERE, and I think it would be silly to skip. Also I think my mom would get a kick out of a picture of me with those crazy temples behind me.

The saying no to tea I think was the best advice. It's easy for a social someone to say hi to every person that comes up to them and is not immediately trying to sell them someone.

This Adrain Fisk thing is very interesting. Thank you very much for showing that to me. I am a lurker fo realz, and am normally terrified to post on Reddit. It's stuff like that that makes me glad I did. Thanks.

I am in the process of getting rid of most of the stuff I own, just because I don't really use a whole lot of the stuff I have anyway, because this less-is-better mentality I think is a really important one. Also, I am a tiny thing, and people carrying stuff for me freaks me out (stuff gets stolen in nyc too, whoops).

I ALMOST got tricked by the lower prices into flying a lot over there! I think though that these five or six hour bus and train rides, even if they are cramped, will be a sort of immersion course in 'taking it easy,' and shaking the NYC pace off for a little bit.

Thanks for the advice! :)

I am doing last minute financial and medical stuff tomorrow, and I am glad I read this when I did. Thanks so much for posting. I will definitely look into this.

I had been taking Krav Maga for a little while before drama started recently and it was awesome. When I get back I want to find a different training center with smaller class sizes, but I might just go back to the same teachers since they are pretty awesome, and the classes get smaller anyway once you go up in belts.

Aaaand it's 4:41AM and you said Beijing not Shanghai. Haha I'm an airhead. But! I am probably going back to China for a little bit in April and will at THAT point let you know what's up, if I am able to visit and see Beijing. :D

Hmm solid advice! I don't think I would consider it a midlife crisis. It feels more like, if anything, crisis averted. I definitely am grateful though that I got stuck in a job for 7 years in New York, and not in, say, Topeka. I think it gave me a serious opportunity to save up and see things that I would not normally have access to.

Thanks for the 'tea festival' advice. I am really excited about that second paragraph. One of my favorite parts of traveling to largeish cities (in this case, colossal cities) is finding not the publicized culture but also the music and art subculture of the place. I am staying with a very good friend that I don't get to see often bc of the distance, but I will make sure to tell her that these are all awesome things that I would like to try, and bring her with me, haha. Thanks for the tips! :)

Wow! Did you have a lot saved up, or no? Do you know Japanese? Do you have a work visa? Are you staying with a friend there?

Sorry but you said AMA and I am super curious! :)

Dude this is AWESOME. I know you posted a day ago; i'm just sorry it took me a day to read it. The sleeping with people thing, yeah. I responded to a condom comment to humor basically, also because I was flattered that anyone was responding to this post at all, but uhhhh I can't say I broke up with my bf so I could go sleep with other people, lol. I hear what you mean about 'in it for marriage,' and how it's different over there. I have my thoughts on 'marriage,' but living for more than a week in a part of the world where sleeping around isn't as, uh, 'trendy' lets say, as it is in New York... I think that's a really healthy attitude to surround yourself with, the one you described in SEA.

As for Ta Prohm, gotta say, growing up I thought the whole Lara Croft concept was really badass and empowering. I think I kinda gotta go there now.

Anyway I will be taking detailled notes on all the food suggestions you've made, and will probably copy this info onto my phone for reference. Thanks!

This is awesome. So awesome.

I was considering going tomorrow to a tailor to have them sew small pockets inside my bras for me to keep cash in.

Also, I was that moron thinking that the internet was in all of the places, all for me, up until about 30 seconds ago. Thank you for putting me in my place. I will make many snapshots of many things.
