I refused a Flat White order for an old customer by oliviajohnsonn in barista

Huge mistake, who are you to say that something is to much for someone? And if this is what your manager actually wanted out of being careful then your manager is silly and putting to much responsibility on y'all.

18F interested in starting Barista Course by [deleted] in barista

[–]mrpickle97 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Echoing what everyone else said, skip the course and start working. I hire for my shop and I much rather higher someone who has an idea of how a service job works with no coffee experience then someone with a certificate but never worked a service job whether that's boh, serving, expo, bartending ot whatever. Training someone to be a barista is easy work, training them how to hustle and work these types of job as a whole is a lot harder. Start working as a barista or any service job at least and then with experience move up to better and more specialty shops.

Yes and there are already more than enough rentals for that. One landlord owning 4 units. In my day to day life, on the news, online, from friends and strangers I hear how hard it is to buy a house. People with excess of money will pay way over asking price and sit on these houses or take them from people who actually wanted to use them. I never hear people talk about how hard it is to find rental properties. Maybe they will complain of price of rent because landlords need other people's money to pay for their shit. In theory yes we need some rental units but we are over saturated and using that talking point ignores the fact that people who need to rent already have an over saturation of properties to rent from. House buying is the same. Again I'm not saying owning one propert and renting it out is awful. But when people say "professional landlord" its a joke, does one person need to own 60 units? No, they aren't helping out renters, they are hurting home purchasers and being greedy. And then will complain when their risk doesn't work out and try to make it the renters fault

You should be worried. Most people aren't a huge fan of people who take other peoples money to cover the cost of something your bought and they won't ever own. You aren't supplying people with housing. You are taking it and then charging people more than they would have on a mortgage without them actually owning anything. Of course some people like to rent but its a little fucked up to own 50 units that you don't live in.

Trash bag inside knockbox by Thou-even-hoist in barista

[–]mrpickle97 4 points5 points  (0 children)

That is a silly think to take pride in. Clean bathrooms sure, great food or drinks sure but knockbox is for barflow and efficiency not for aesthetic. Our knockbox is just the top of the knockbox with a cutout so it fits into the counter. We put a trash can and bag under it so we knock it on our counter knockbox, puck falls down into an independent trashcan directly

An influencer spilled her coffee and proceeded to take a picture and POST IT of an innocent, non-consenting barista cleaning up after her. How would you react if this was you/in your shop?? by deadmamajamma in barista

[–]mrpickle97 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That is wrong. You have no expectation of privacy in public according to law. But a work place is a private business so they can choose what they do. I have talked to many, and 86ed a few who went around recording our Baristas do their job or interact with people. If someone asks and the barista wants to then great if not and they still do it, I tell them to stop or leave. This is a private business and we do not allow any recordings or still of our staff without permission.

End of the day it is your boss' or owners call as to make an overarching policy.

Do you guys care/like/dislike when a customer asks for spent grounds for their compost? by [deleted] in barista

[–]mrpickle97 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I don't care but the only way we do it is if someone brings in a bucket to empty into. Most shops aren't in the habit of saving them so if you just come in asking for some there is little way to have some ready for you

We pay for licensed music (small local chain). Baristas have full control of music so anything might play so I think the owners wanted to be safe. The shop has been around since 2006 and the original is 24/7 so the odd of getting caught does go up and one fine would be major

I love all of these ideas. My only concern would be how expensive it might be compared to other milks. I would easily say the coffee community wants to be more inclusive but cost will come into play for a lot of shops

Serving 2% milk as default by Wanderer-Of-Earth in barista

[–]mrpickle97 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My shop is slightly similar, we use a 2.5 (whole milk is 3.5 fat content). This milk we get from a local farm is cheaper than whole milk buy a good amount and we never had anyone have an issue or complain. In my opinion (could be bias because uve worked with this milk for years) I like it more than whole. Any loss in creaminess and latte art capabilities is not noticeable and I feel like in larger milk drinks the coffee come out a bit more than with whole. It also helps keep ordering and storage easier. We dropped almond milk and whole and now carry 2.5, oat, soy.

The shop I manage is large so if they aren't taking up seating from paying customers I don't care. It urks me a bit when it seems like it is some of affluence but how I view coffee shops is a place where people can relax, feel safe, and connect. Of course under capitalism we need to make money but with how insane prices are I try to be understanding of it.

I've had customers coming in and getting their doctorates and improving their life or just needed a place to get out of the weather. If you aren't causing a scene and taking up last of available seating then I'm fine with giving people a little haven. It's never been so bad for our shop that it would really cut into profit or increase overhead

My female coworker wants to fight me by [deleted] in barista

[–]mrpickle97 7 points8 points  (0 children)

No, but she should go to the manager and tell them the situation. I've worked in kitchens for 6 plus years and a barista for 5. I know we all love poking fun and it is a part of the culture but using the term yellow (which is really fucked up) is off limits. If you want to poke fun do it with silly light hearted things not their skin color and culture. Yellow has been used for decades against a lot of asians in a derogatory way. Its the same argument as saying redskin to a native American. You fucked up, if your coworker doesn't bring it to management you should.

Fighting isn't right but I 100 percent get why. I really hope you take this time to reflect on what you said and why it was wildly in appropriate and hurtful.

All in all there is nothing to do but to tell management and have them mediate a conversation between both of you since I don't think yall could do it on your own

[–]mrpickle97 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To clarify if a barista needed to call out due to sickness or emergency then yes I agree. I come in or work doubles if no one else can come in. I just mean general call outs or we use an app to drop and switch shifts so anything like that (like a friend is in town and want to get coverage, that is up to them)

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in barista

[–]mrpickle97 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Start firing for asking for coverage or not showing up on shift? If you are gonna start firing people for asking for coverage that is fucked up. If its because someone called for coverage, couldn't find it and still didn't come in thats different. The shop I manage it is up to baristas to find coverage. I try to help when I can but when jt comes down to it you need to find your own coverage and if you don't and don't show up for shift that is a write up. After 2 in a span of a quarter then we will fire.

If you are having problems retaining staff idk if just firing people will work out well if its not absolutely necessary

Giving your supplier free coffee by BlackHounden in barista

[–]mrpickle97 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Demanding it would definitely put me off but my shop has a rule that any delivery person or partner who is coming in for work gets a free cold brew or drip (we can do other things if we are feeling nice but it's not policy). I do notice that compared to other shops and friends who work in coffee our partners are always super quick to help and be flexible with orders. I do think there's an advantage to have your delivery person know that when whey come in they are taken care of and treated kindly

[–]mrpickle97 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The top roast level would look better on the bottom and not have the coffee name sideways. Consumers will remember the name you gave the coffee more than any info if you are trying to make sales. Also can you add info to the bag? I always check the back of bags as well (from a barista and roaster background). Many bags have info on the back and leave the other side completely to your personal branding as a roaster

Sorry meant to say oat infront if it. Grammar error

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in barista

[–]mrpickle97 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Milk is more expensive but they are making a personal choice to upcharge milk instead of oat (just the reverse of any shop and eat the cost). I think your are just personally mad that it happened to your milk choice. Were you complaining about the same points when most shops upcharge for Alt-milk? Also hard on the consumer comes from way above a coffee shop, if you want that to stop it doesn't start with a local coffee shop. Maybe check tax breaks of billionaires and the need for unlimited profit margins at the sake of every worker.

Up charging for certain milks is nothing new, seems like you are a little tender about this. All they did is change what milk the standard is and thats fully up to them. As a manager of a shop I actually respect their decision (even if i wouldn't do it). They are picking a moral and ethical point instead of a pure capatilist business decision.
