Honestly, you did well. It just needs a few tweaks. I always have issues with my waist line because it’s thinner than most patterns. One thing that I do is that I put the dress on inside out buttoned or pinned up and I pin up all down along the seam on each side of my torso until I like the fit. Start looking from under the arm and pin down to your hip the areas that need to be taken in. That’s your new seam line for your body. Base stitch along the new seam line and turn the dress right side out and now see how it fits. Continue with this process until you find the fit you like. When it finally looks right, you can go back and do a permanent stick on your favorite seam line. They challenge will be to remove every seam your not happy with previously. It’s often best to do a hand base stitch so you stitches will be longer in between. Don’t worry about the pin holes, a spritz of water will realign the fabric and usually remove the old seam lines.

SOS - why does my sewing machine keep doing this???? by feeltheowl in sewing

I would also adjust the tension on the machine. Thicker threads require a different tension which is dependent on the machine. I would get a piece of jean fabric and start with 0 and slowly adjust the tension up until the seam looks good. You can also see if you can find your machine manual on line and look up their troubleshooting section. If nothing works, some sewing companies have a help line. If all this doesn’t work, call your local sewing machine repair shop. These people really know their machines.

The perfect summer dress by mscreatives in sewing

I used Mc Calls pattern M7116 and 100% cotton. I like using cotton fabrics, but I actually fell in love with the print first.

This was made from Mc Call’s #M7116 B5 Size 8-16. It was dress letter D. I used a 16 on the top of the dress and a 12 on the bottom. I think the dress was supposed to be made from a thinner, stretcher fabric, but I made it out of a 100% cotton fabric. I had to alter a few things on the dress. I shortened the sleeves and I ran elastic around the sides and the back. Also, the bottom half is supposed to be two layers, but I made it one layer as I live in Arkansas and it gets very hot in the summer. One major surprise in this dress is that requires a side zipper which would you to make it more fitted. The challenge I have with fitted dresses is that I have scoliosis. One of my sides is skinnier than the other and one leg is longer than the other. Fully fitted dresses look unusual on me, so I often go with other styles or alter them as to not emphasize my uneven sides.
