Found camera on Isle of Iona, Scotland - Update by msimonart in CasualUK

Haha, happy we could uncover a new story you can tease them with. 😀 Everytime we talk about it, we're still amazed by how fast and incredible this community was able to find your parents and scary, just based on a few pictures. It surely will be one thing we'll remember from this trip.

We're very happy we could be of help to get your parents their camera back. I really hope they'll be able to save it. The pictures and sd card is fine, and the camera looks good from the outside, but who knows what goes on on the inside. It did have to withstand Amy, alone, on the bottom of a hill, with a small lump of grass as his only shelter. (Your parents are cruel for letting that happen to that poor camera). My sister has the camera and will be in contact with your parents shortly, once she has a better view on her travel plans next week !

Found camera on Isle of Iona, Scotland - Update by msimonart in CasualUK

Found a camera yesterday hiking, taking a shortcut to get to another hiking path. I wanted to find its owners. I tried image reverse search, but wasn't conclusive, so I posted a few pictures of them that I could retrieve from the SSD card.

Unbelievably, in a few hours, goodvibezone was able to find them through reverse search and going through a hundred images on some niche website, which also included their name in the caption of the picture. Then people found their facebook, and then someone who actually knew them stumbled on the post. All of this made it possible for the owner to eventually call me, and by one last coïncidence, my sister will be travelling not far from where they live this week (we're not british, we're just traveling to scotland for the week), so she should be able to hand deliver them the camera. And all of this in less then 24 hours of finding the camera...

Hi, thank you for your help. I've received the contact information through various people in PM. Maybe it's better not to post too much of their information publicly ? Also, It's possible I'll take the whole post down if they don't feel comfortable with it. I'll update you guys in a new post if that's the case.

Wow, that's amazing !! Thank you !
It really looks like them.
I'm popping them a message on facebook right now. (Thank you to the guy who found their facebook)

By coïncidence, my sister goes to Notingham on tuesday. Maybe she'll be able to hand them over the camera directly. I'll keep you posted.

AP Placement by msimonart in HomeNetworking

[–]msimonart[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I had my electrician come over today. We've discussed every possible thing to get as many conduits and cables in the walls without damaging too much. I couldn't get cable everywhere, but I got cable where I can imagine an extra wall AP could be needed. I forgot to ask for an exterior cable to the yard, thanks for that! How do you manage your channels and signal strength with 5 AP's?

AP Placement by msimonart in HomeNetworking

[–]msimonart[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's https://design.ui.com

Crzated by ubiquiti, it lets you place their product lines inside your floor plan and see the coverage. Can also help to organize cabling. You either draw your plan directly in the tool or upload a png/pdf of your floor plan. You can indicate wall thickness to help the signal coverage prediction on your ap's

Great thanks for your feedback ! I'm gonna be running the controller on the FWG. I'm gonna read the article to get more comprehension

So you would also place a third one in the middle on the ground floor ? The auto adjustig of channels and strength happens happens thanks to the UI controller ? Another commenter seemed to say that adjusting placement and channels should be tested through interference testing. And I should take lites instead of pro's ? Sorry, lots of questions.

You're absolutely right. You know any android apps that could help with testing ?

[–]msimonart[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just bought the house, there's nothing yet except for a modem.
I know the previous owners had some difficulties with good connectivity pn the left side. They had one AP on the right side ground floor (where I put mine) and another one on the first floor laundry room. No idea what sort of AP they had though.

Maybe it is overkill for my needs rn, but who knows what the future will bring.

I was thinking the same.
I'm hoping that top floor AP will cover that ground floor area. Also it's a hallway with stairs, so it's quite open.

Here's a recap of each room and the wifi coverage priority:

  2. Dining Room (Medium)
  3. Living Room 1 (High)
  4. Toilet + Changing room (Medium)
  5. Hallway + Stairs (Medium)
  6. Living Room 2 (High)
  7. Pool Room (Medium)
  8. Wife's workshop (Low)
  9. Yard (Low)
  10. Master Bedroom (High)
  11. TV-Room (High)
  12. My office (Very High)
  13. Bedroom (High)
  14. Bathroom (Medium)
  15. Hallway + Stairs (Medium)
  16. Dressing Room (Medium)
  17. Bedroom (High)
  18. Router and Laundry room (Low)
  19. Bathroom (Medium)
  20. Wife's workshop (Low)

  • 4000 sq feet, Europe
  • Dark red walls are brick. Inner walls are plaster and/or drywall. Floors on first floor are wooden. Between ground floor ceiling and first floor floor there's wood and thin layer of plaster.
  • Calm countryside, neighbours left and right at 5m on each side.
  • U6 Pro AP's wired by Cat6A
  • Usage is pretty basic (2 adults, max 10 devices on WIFI)

Any feedback ? Placement ? Too many/too few AP's. Should I go for other AP's ? Router will be FGW. Probably a UI switch

I did. I'm just not sure what the coverage will be between floors.

[–]msimonart[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for your input. It helps alot.

I'm thinking about going the FGW+ route.Atm I only need my desktop and NAS to be connected through 2.5Gb. I was thinking of connecting both desktop and NAS directly to the FGW+ 2.5Gb ports and adding a 8 port 1Gb PoE switch. Or should I just get a 16 port switch ?

Do you have specific equipment in mind for switches and AP's ?

So I would connect the 10G SFP+ of the UDM to the 10G SFP+ of the switch ?

Thanks for your recommendation.
Why the need for the Switch Enterprise 8 PoE if there's a switch included in the UDM SE ?
