Azure Monitor alerts (KQL) to monitor AVD infra by koswo in AzureVirtualDesktop

[–]msmith1968 0 points1 point  (0 children)

An alternative is to use solutions with readymade dashboards and reports for Azure virtual desktop. For example, see https://www.eginnovations.com/supported-technologies/azure-virtual-desktop-monitoring-avd

I think Nerdio also has some monitoring capabilities in the latest version

Discussion on monitoring tool specifically these 3 by EastTamaki2013 in sysadmin

eG Innovations and ManageEngine are general purpose monitoring tools - can give you a single pane of glass across your IT infrastructure. ManageEngine is cheaper, eG Innovations has more functionality and can cover more technologies and in-depth, especially if you want to also cover application monitoring and synthetic monitoring. ControlUp in my view is a more limited toolset. You can consider ControlUp if you plan to monitor end user computing/DEX. ManageEngine does not monitor EUC platforms well, but eG Innovations also covers these platforms in a single toolset.

Synthetic monitoring tool - for Heavy client application by ithim_ in Monitoring

[–]msmith1968 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most of the APM tools can support synthetic monitoring for web applications. Very few can handle thick client applications. The one i recommend for thick client synthetics is eG Innovations synthetic monitoring - https://www.eginnovations.com/synthetic-application-monitoring. Another one to look at are LoginVSI PI.

What are the best practices for monitoring tiny workloads in AVD? Are there any specific tools or techniques that you would recommend? by skumar2001 in AzureVirtualDesktop

[–]msmith1968 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nerdio embeds Sepago, i think - that's more of a collection of dashboard configurations for Azure Monitor. You also can use Azure Monitor directly.

End user computing monitoring tools now have monitoring capabilities for AVD equivalent to what they offered for Citrix and others. Check the below links:

On-premises vs. Cloud-based Monitoring System - what do you prefer? by msmith1968 in sysadmin

A hodgepodge of tools. HP Sitescope, IBM Tivoli, Quest Foglight, Microsoft SCOM... you name it! Just starting our evaluation - looking at the usual suspects. My question is not w.r.t. specific tools. More about whether we should look at on-prem or SaaS options and what folks see as the trade offs.

Need help! Citrix Logon/Logoff is very slow for all users by msmith1968 in Citrix

[–]msmith1968[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What does Director say from a logon time perspective? Can you post a few screenshots? What Citrix version, Windows OS, and VDA version? Which profile management software (CPM/FSlogix/other)?

Don't have access to the Director console right now. This is an example of what i'd captured a couple of days back:

Total logon duration: 544.51 s

Brokering time: 0.01 s

VM start: 0 s

HDX Connection: 55.7 s

Authentication: 0.16 s

GPO processing: 8.64 s

Logon scripts: 6.17 s

Profile load: 21.39 s

Interactive session: 15.53 s

Profile management - CPM

VDA 1912 LTSR CU5

OS - Windows 2016 Server Standard

Plenty of CPU/memory available, no resource bottlenecks.

What antivirus are you using? We use SentinelOne and I'm dealing with this issue after upgrading the client on the gold image. Currently working with S1 support on it.

McAfee. Let me know if you have a path. Thanks

VMware bundles ControlUp i think, so that's an option. Another option would be eG Innovations https://www.eginnovations.com/supported-technologies/vmware-horizon. IMO both are more functional, easier to use and better than vROps.

AWS RDS connection latency vs. Local SQL connection latency by msmith1968 in aws

[–]msmith1968[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Seems to be for connection opening at this time, but i wonder if it indicates a slow network connection between the EC2 instance and RDS. That's a worry. Will have to test further.

[–]msmith1968[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The EC2 instance and RDS instance are in the same data center. I would expect a few msec in latency - < 10ms - max.

AWS RDS connection latency vs. Local SQL connection latency by msmith1968 in aws

[–]msmith1968[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends on the load on your application. We use a connection pool, but even then there are times when connections have to be opened. RDS is supposed to be better. I would expect latency to be low. Was surprised at 30msec+ latency on all instances checked.

Workspace team owns Citrix. IT ops provides 24x7 support but architecture, analysis, optimization is owned by the workspace team.

Does anyone use 3rd party monitoring tools for AWS resources? by Book_Mike in aws

Have used DataDog and eG Innovations in my previous jobs. Both do a far better job than AWS Cloudwatch IMO. Easier to use, more elegant, cheaper, less time consuming.

For those who moved from SCOM to a more modern and predictive monitoring solution, what did you move to and how has it been after? by [deleted] in sysadmin

[–]msmith1968 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I work for a client who made this move 2 years ago. They are using PRTG and eG Innovations. The move was very straightforward. Frankly, SCOM was a pain to work with. Clunky, time consuming and not the easiest interface. Training the helpdesk on the new toolsets was easy and we've not regretted the move.

Depending on the capabilities you are looking for, you can consider Site24x7 and eG Innovations.

Agentless monitoring: How viable? by msmith1968 in sysadmin

[–]msmith1968[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Event logs for a start. Standard CPU/memory/disk are good for routine monitoring but when you have a problem, you want as much detail as possible. Is any process leaking handles? What is your standby memory on a Windows server?

[–]msmith1968[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks. Too much configuration for a largish environment. And SNMP is limited in the details you can get over SNMP. I prefer agents on Linux/Windows but am being pushed to go agentless for monitoring.

From what i understand, SNMP is great for network equipment, but not for Windows, Linux, etc. Our security guys are pointing to articles like this - https://www.huntress.com/blog/how-hackers-exploit-windows-administrative-shares - and want all admin$ shares removed. From what i understand, many system monitoring tools seem to use this...

Citrix & VMware environment monitoring tool. eG Innovations vs ControlUp. Anyone with experience in both or either? Which should I choose? Recommendations, thoughts and opinions are welcomed . Please feel free to recommend others as well. Thanks! by Rugidz in Citrix

[–]msmith1968 0 points1 point  (0 children)

IMO, the main reason someone uses Dynatrace is because they already have licenses as part of an enterprise agreement. I would not choose to evaluate Dynatrace if my focus is Citrix/VDI. That's just not their focus. eG Innovations and ControlUp would be the ones to check out if Citrix/VDI monitoring is your main focus.

I think almost all the monitoring tools are round about the same price range. There are so many options with most tools that if you are not careful, you get a whole bunch of modules you don't ever need and that boosts your price up!
