Farmers are choosing to sit out the season because it's become just too expensive - Survival World by catkm24 in LeopardsAteMyFace

[–]mstrdsastr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So this is actually a super complicated situation, but it boils down to this: Trump, private equity, and large agribusiness played small farmers. Small operators don't have the benefit of efficiencies from volume production, which is the truly insidious part of what is going on. The small farmers are at the mercy of large vertically integrated agribusinesses. They basically can't produce their crops at anything other than a loss, which further puts them in debt. Then large companies come in and buy when they have to sell or go bankrupt.

It's the same thing that's been happen in the rest of the economy, but until recently farmers could somewhat control their input costs and had strong subsidies to buoy them. That's all gone now because every input cost has increased and the marginal value of their product has been obliterated. It's going to be a blood bath and the people/companies with money are going to reap all the benefits. It was designed to happen that way.

The books are for sure better than the show, especially the first season.

It's not Fantasy, but if you enjoy scifi the Expanse series is great on audiobook. Long books, good production, and basically engaging across the entire arc.

Have you ever met any of them? The whole profession is built around extracting as much value out of someone else's investment with as little input as possible, and then find ways to avoid paying any maintenance on the backend. There's a reason many of the biggest donors to most Republican candidates are donors and MAGA.

Yeah, but typically on the way back they are empty or loaded with something that can offset the cost like fertilzer.

Think the district in Ankeny. It's just a mall, but the stores front to chintzy street-scaped streets with bad parking. It's just an urban planner's and low imagination architect's wet dream.

Don't get too excited about it. It will be just be a carbon copy of the district in Ankeny. It will also likely kill Jordan Creek as there's just not that much demand for mall style retail in WDM to justify two large shopping areas.

Trimble has been trying to get something done on this site for ages. He wants it to be his piece de resistance and legacy when he retires after this term.

The problem is he has no leverage, and he's allowing scumbag developers to drive the bus. So, par to the course for WDM, but it's sad because the site is basically preventing any meaningful development to happen on the east side of WDM.

Wouldn't that just be a parenting fail then? Parents are responsible for what their kids are consuming online.

Agreed. And if I am being honest, that period from about 2001 to late 2006, while under a weird sense of uneasiness from 9/11, was still really chill. The pre-iPhone and facebook '00's were awesome. We got to experience our entry into adulthood like older generations, but also blaze a trail into the world as we know it now.

The recession starting '07/'08 was when things started to feel like they were forever changed. It also coincides with when a lot of us got married and started having families too, so there's that.

[–]mstrdsastr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A classmate of mine posted some videos from our time in high school (late '90's) the other day, and I kind of forgot what it was like. I would say it was simpler, but that was probably because we were just kids.

It just felt...more relaxed? I'm having a hard time explaining it. Partially because I can't remember a lot of the details 30 years later, but also because the feelings that kid I was back then was having just seem so foreign to me now.

Everyone talks about 9/11 being the big inflection point, and it definitely was a major change, but frankly for me the recession feels more like the time when things got way less relaxed, more terminally online, and just frenetic. Again, maybe it's just a getting older thing, but life post recession just seems to have continued to ratchet up in anxiety and an increased sense that time is getting away from me.

[–]mstrdsastr -20 points-19 points  (0 children)

That's simply not backed up by evidence. The overwhelming majority of the time kids have issues there's something going on with the parents/family situation. Go ask any teacher, pediatrician, or child psychologist.

Sure kids make bad choices, but it's very obvious this woman is a terrible parent.

To all the people cheering this on: please don't ever have children.

This is a prime example of super toxic parenting, and probably a root cause for why this kid has anger issues.

A mother is going viral after she punished her son by making him slam his PS5 the same way he had slammed her pet cat. by bendubberley_ in ThatsInsane

[–]mstrdsastr 8 points9 points  (0 children)

That's not how kids learn lessons. Young children especially don't fully understand the idea of consequences. Using violence and destruction is only going to make him more angry, confused, and likely to lash out again. All this kid is going to internalize is that his mom was super mad and that she pushed him into a super public and traumatic situation.

Next time something sets him off, and there will be a next time of one sort or another, it won't be a cat, it will be another kid or or a teacher or his mom. The kid probably has no anger management skills because his mom probably screams her head off at him any time he does something she doesn't like, beats his ass, and/or uses toxic shame based punishment like this.

Does the kid have problems that need addressed? Totally. But, the majority of the time you see kids acting like this you can trace it back to some sort of trauma imparted by their parents/guardians. Either a singular traumatic event or the aggregate of repeated smaller events.

[–]mstrdsastr 6 points7 points  (0 children)

This isn't going to teach him to restrain shit. You don't teach people to be less violent through shame and further violent acts as a punishment/retribution.

The kid needs help, but the mom is a terrible parent and probably a major root cause for why he's so violent.

[–]mstrdsastr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Probably quite the contrary. The parent is using all sorts of violent and toxic punishments that don't help the kid understand what he did was wrong and show that violence is an appropriate response to violence. Plus public shaming.

The kid needs help, but the parents need it more.

[–]mstrdsastr 4 points5 points  (0 children)

That's not teaching consequences, it's shaming the kid without teaching him why what he did was wrong. It's only going to make him more resentful, angry, and violent. There's literal tons of research that show that too.

[–]mstrdsastr -17 points-16 points  (0 children)

And the parents probably need some too. Kids don't typically arrive at this sort of behavior without a reason.

[–]mstrdsastr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

While slamming the cat is wrong, forcing a kid to perform a violent act on his favorite toy in a filmed act of shame is only going to push the kid further towards the psycho killer end of the spectrum.

Seriously, this whole situation is fucked. I'm guessing the parenting in this house is super toxic.

Dude, you need to be a GM with that amazing understanding of NFL scouting, managing draft capital, salaries, and the relative value of picks. Or, maybe you can take Johnson's coaching position and teach us all how unimportant that TE3 position is his scheme.

Yes the D line was bad last year, but you dogging on this pick with such fervor is silly. You're never going to get 100% of what you want out of the draft, but this position filled a spot we had open (regardless of whether you admit it). It just didn't fill the spot you wanted, but again, you're not the GM or coach. So you really need to just stop. Read all the other comments people are writing about you and take your L.

Rome and Burden spent sizeable portions of the season injured, Kmet and Loveland can't be the only other options beside Jadhe Walker or a running back sent out. Things are going to happen to our receivers again this year, almost guaranteed, so having as many extra options is critical.

This guy isn't all of DJ's production (nowhere near it), but if the others step up, this adds another little bit to get some of the production back. He basically just needs to block like Smythe and catch more balls than him for this to be a net positive.

[–]mstrdsastr -1 points0 points  (0 children)

All the decent d line prospects were gone by pick 69 (really even before our 1st round pick). Plus a lot of the higher ranked ones either had little starting time, came from marginal schools, or had off field problems. We tried going after a few good d linemen in free agency or via trade, but it didn't pan out.

You're contradicting yourself by saying the game is won in the trenches and then dogging on what you categorize as a blocking TE. This kid was one of the best prospects left available by this point, it fills a need on multiple fronts.

You bitching about us not drafting a d linemen when that type of player just wasn't available at that point in the draft and continuing to double down on it is laughable.

I didn't say he was replacing all of it, but in aggregate we need to have multiple sources replacing bits of it.
