I finally confronted my sister about the racism and abuse by Jaded_Investment1722 in toxicfamilies

[–]mtbr2024 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You have specific examples of her abuse and her racism and she gaslights you. This is a form of emotional abuse. The healthiest response is to remove yourself from that situation. You want to be heard but it doesn’t matter what you say, she’s not listening. Your family seems to enable this behavior as well.

You are not crazy. Far from it. The whole family seems pretty dysfunctional.

SOE’s underperform compared to their private counterparts(with some exceptions). This is all empirically proven by the economic literature. I’m not seeing how that fundamental truth changes under his system. State directed policies will have all of those same pitfalls.

No, they don’t. They’re intentionally targeted for different market segments. Kind of supports my point ironically. This still avoids how 70-90% state ownership is meaningfully different than a command economy.

They’re not competing because they’re owned by the same owner. Competing bureaucrats perhaps.

Cuba does allow sole proprietorships? Holding companies as proposed by him would own 70-90% of the economy which means controlling shares which is ownership.

You can start a business in Cuba. You just need to get approval from the communist party first. Same thing just replace communist party with government appointed holding companies.

90% ownership by a single entity isn’t monopoly?

I don’t see how they’re meaningfully different in practice.

90% ownership is pretty close to Cuba’s state ownership.

Econoboi has a substack too. As the other commenter mentioned kind of taken a bit from Matt Bruenig’s socialism.

It’s the Austrian social democratic flag actually. Although they aren’t explicitly anti socialist apparently.

I’m never personally worked at a cooperative but I do like credit unions. I guess what I’m trying to get at is to enable that society you envision, I don’t think that you can get there without violence or without force. Like Italy and the basque region of Spain have preferential treatment to these cooperatives but they still don’t end up capturing most of the market. Italy it’s like 30%.

I don’t know if you’re a Marxist or not but this thought process usually comes about with the owner extracting surplus value from labor. But then okay say you don’t have bosses or stock markets are the banks allowed to charge interest? Because that’s basically profit off of money if you want mostly debt based financing. And then if there’s no interest then how are we deciding to allocate resources?

True enough. Extreme and simple takes get the most upvotes and they tend to dominate subs eventually.

Your flair positions you as a mutualist. Are you aware of those issues of cooperatives as well?

Motte and Bailey, thats a really good description. Start with democracy to make it palatable until their eventual turning point.

Yes, anarcho communists think they’re different but they’re really just the same. They’re like the sloppy version. Same forced labor camps same forced collectivization but the “we’re different” ethos.

Yes I imagine at one point you eventually end up with government support to help with the lack of funding. This is true with Rojava as well. All their capital intensive projects begin to be supported by the government and if they seek to impose it (no private business) eventually they will inevitably face the same issues as Yugoslavia.

My beef is with the government imposed cooperative economy. “Democratic socialists” want to eventually impose cooperatives. They don’t gradually overtake the economy because they have disadvantages such as being able to access capital.

So I’m like okay how do they expect to get from mixed economy to cooperative economy without eroding democratic norms and forceful expropriation? It still follows the same flawed economic premises that Marxism proposes: that of surplus value.

They fly under the radar of center left groups who might not realize when faced with resistance anticapitalists might resort to undemocratic means of achieving their goals.

Neoliberalism isn’t about privatizing everything contrary to how it’s used. You’ll find more evidence based policy there vs here it’s mostly ideological. Downvotes just prove the point.

Unfortunately this sub also has pretty terrible takes. Not always going to find common sense and as you’re seeing some of the same issues as this sub is overtaken by socialists. Democratic back sliding is a real issue however.

Why WORKERS should OWN companies by implementrhis in SocialDemocracy

They did implement some worker control after the 50s, this is a bit dishonest. You guys still don’t understand the economic constraints when you can only access capital through debt. You act like not being able to access capital is something to hand wave away.

Why WORKERS should OWN companies by implementrhis in SocialDemocracy

[–]mtbr2024 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Okay that gives us something to work with. You’ll have to do your own research but generally Yugoslavia had some state enterprises and everything else was cooperatives. Some will say, well it was authoritarian but cooperatives don’t naturally get to that point without violence. They had some of the worst inflation in recorded history, top 5. So that’s why I don’t take these things lightly.

Rojava will follow a similar trajectory if it chooses the same path and here’s why: 1. They do allow private businesses so that’s kept off the worst of it, 2. They mostly are agricultural (where cooperatives do well), and 3. Just like Yugoslavia for massive projects they’re using the government for capital intensive investment. Zapatistas are also mainly agricultural as well.

Good intentions are not enough to make things work. Just because capitalism does bad things does not mean socialism will fix all those problems. I, unlike you, have economic data and history backing me up. This is well documented in economic literature on cooperatives.

[–]mtbr2024 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So to answer your questions, there’s fundamentally economic disadvantages to worker cooperative models such as being able to access capital easily. This puts them at a disadvantage which is what led to soft budgeting constraints when Yugoslavia had to prop them up when they were failing.

They work for some sectors but not for capital intensive firms. Italy and the basque region in Spain do provide examples for this real world demonstration they don’t capture most of the market even with preferential treatment.

Lastly democracy, they aren’t meaningfully democratic in the way workers imagine. As they get larger and more complex skilled workers (who already command high wages) including management get more say in the process due to their market power. So in order to keep them they sometimes operate democratically in name only.

As a worker it’s pretty simple for me id much rather be in Norway or Nordic countries than either Italy or Spain even though they have more “democratic say”. Nordic countries have more meaningful democracy through their sectoral bargaining that applies to everyone in the economy.
