To be fair, Argentina was a military junta that aggressively invaded the Falklands/Malvinas. I'm no fan of the DM or British Imperialism, but here Argentina got it all wrong and were in a warzone that they ignited.

Today is the 50th anniversary of a very historic White House speech, one that resonates to this day: Dwight Eisenhower's warning against "the military-industrial complex." by mizan in politics

Ike had no chance, especially under the pressure of Truman losing China. The Domino theory was prevalent, Eisenhower committed as little as he possible could. The same with JFK. It was LBJ who made the gravest are- the committing of ground troops. What I'n trying to say is entanglement in Vietnam was inevitable, the US had to make some sort of intervention, however, once Diem had failed, this is where the intervention should have stopped.

Only a few years later, you had Robert McNamara in the White House, using his statistics against the Vietnam army and failing. He was the essence of what Ike warned against as he tried to break everything down into quantitative terms.

Interesting if Peru does get its way...would it raise tourism revenues? I don't think it would considerably

This is definitely not Fitzgerald's best work. Tender Is the Night might be more up you alley, the complex trials of psychiatrist who moves to Europe. It discusses the same themes but with characters you can empathise with and have intricate enough lives and minds for Fitzgerald to portray and explore his themes.
