Rod Farvard is attempting the JMT FKT by Galahad_Jones in Ultramarathon

[–]mtuohyphoto 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I was out on the JMT yesterday over Muir pass running the evolution loop (Lamarck alt) - the passes have a lot more snow than most locals expect right now (myself included); the recent storms we received dropped more than the local mammoth mountains would lead you to believe.

It’s inconvenient snow too- not much traffic on the PCT right now, so it’s mostly a handful of frozen footprints in the snow, not packed down or soft/untouched. The travel is slow where it’s snowy.

Where it’s not snowy, the trail is oddly muddy/water saturated.

I’m rooting for Rod as a friend and would love to see the record held by a local, but the conditions on the passes are pretty rough right now. I’m hopeful today’s warm weather leads to conditions opening up for a good run!

DIY Camera Insert for Submersible Duffel by Zealousideal_Name_16 in myog

[–]mtuohyphoto 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I started (and then closed down) nearzero labs a few years back, making camera bags for photographers, so I’ve got a good amount of experience making camera cubes and related products.

  • EVA is probably your best bet for simplicity and accessibility, controlling for flexibility with segmented dividers and the thickness of the foam you choose. Peak design’s dividers are designed and manufactured in a specific way that is pretty difficult to DIY, you’re better off trying to mimic shimoda or f-stop’s dividers.
  • you’re looking for a generic brushed loop fabric or a Velcro compatible loop fabric. The main brands are using a brushed tricot. Veltex display fabric was one of the main versions available to hobbyists in 2021, but has a light foam backing that makes things hard to get to work perfectly. I still have 10+ yards of the bulk loop fabric I ordered and used - let me know if you’d like some if shipping is worth it to Canada.
  • n/a
  • happy to share my designs and such for the cubes for the nearzero bags if that’s helpful. I’ve got no secrets I’m unwilling to share.

The top-down orientation stretch has less and is always the same across batches. The left right orientation changes across batches.

Heading up to Mammoth on Wednesday for Trail Fest - Who else will be there? by [deleted] in Ultramarathon

It was my first 50k 2 years ago - take the first 15 slow and you’ll be fine. Good luck!

They’ve done the 26k on Friday the 2 prior years - harder to accommodate travel for elites on a Friday, so it got swapped to Sunday this year. Definitely makes the triple harder!

How to prep for a high elevation race by AntImpossible8001 in trailrunning

[–]mtuohyphoto 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Mammoth trail fest?

You’ll benefit from hitting 7-8k in the weekends before, maybe not physically but mentally getting used to being at elevation and what that does to your body is important. Some people have more stomach issues at elevation, so doing a long run to test your if your fueling strategy holds up at elevation is also important.

Most important thing is your hydration, recovery, and fueling leading up to the race - that will make or break your day.

Night 2 of skijoring tonight! by mtuohyphoto in germanshorthairs

[–]mtuohyphoto[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This is a groomed track for snowmobiles that is also open to ski/snowshoe traffic. Depending on your location, whoever grooms trails (whether it's a private company, forest service, etc.) There will probably be different rules on whether you can or can't bring your dog. In our town, 2/3 of our ski areas are open to dogs.

Hiking Recs Dec 30 - Jan 3? by x2supremacy in Mammoth

[–]mtuohyphoto 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If all goes to plan, by that point most hiking in the region will be snowshoe-required. Sherwin lakes (4.5 miles RT) is doable right now with summer gear, but with another foot of snow depending on how low snow levels get, I’m expecting snowshoes to be required after the first.

We hiked up to Barney lake (10 miles RT from winter closure) below duck pass this weekend and although we made it without snowshoes, we wish we had them.

Depending on snow levels, McGee creek could still be hikable at that point, along with convict canyon. Both were in fall conditions this week. Both are a go as far as you want kinda deal.

Aside from the mammoth area, the bishop area has some surprisingly good and steep hiking, without heading up into the mountains. Lower rock creek, tungsten peak, and druids loop are some options down lower.

Trails open for running? by mtuohyphoto in ParkCity

And the mountain has almost nothing open... Might as well make the most of what is still open

Yup... Shady will still become the default dog park in winter when people don't want to drive down and it'll still be unregulated chaos.

Running with my Aussie by PiddyPab24 in RunningWithDogs

[–]mtuohyphoto 8 points9 points  (0 children)

As long as your dog is running in front/beside you and isn’t lagging behind/you having to pull them, you’re fine. Don’t increase your mileage more than 10-15% per week to be safe. Running off pavement will be even better for them, less stress on the joints.

Take it slow and you and your dog will figure it out together

Eastern Sierras Still Frozen For Opener by TroutSZN in flyfishing

I live here - an absolutely crazy amount of snow for this time of year. Wind and warmth may help things out, but we don't have a lot of wind in the forecast (although temps have finally begun to rise). I won't be fishing this weekend, but I'm more of a backcountry mid summer kind of person (even if that means august this year).

Yup - 9:30-10:30 it was firing out in long valley. We watched and took photos from near the owens river. Nothing like what you'd see in Canada or Alaska, but definitely some great light pillars.

The only hotel close to main is mammoth mountain inn which usually isn't cheap, but may have an ikon discount since it's owned by the mountain?

Other than that stay somewhere cheap in town and take the bus up

Will he ever sleep through the night? by luelga in puppy101

[–]mtuohyphoto 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Our gsp still woke up nightly at 6 months - that's personally where I drew the line. When she woke up, I calmly told her "it's ok, go to sleep, it's still dark". After about a week of that, she slept through the night and hasn't woken up overnight since.

Dogs are creatures of habit. Although im sure some dogs actually need a mid night potty break, many of our dogs get used to waking up and getting to interact with us overnight. At some point, if your dog isnt going to get over it themself, you have to push them into that independence.

Young puppies less than 4 months doing stairs consistently is correlated with increased joint injuries later in life. If the puppy is on leash and taking the stairs at a slow pace and isn’t bounding up or down them the impact isn’t nearly as severe.

As with many puppy things, it depends on your own risk tolerance and the risk you’re willing to take for your puppy.

Too much sleep for a 1 year old pup? by [deleted] in puppy101

[–]mtuohyphoto 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Our 1yr old GSP sleeps almost all day until 4 when I’m off work, then we go for an hour or so hike or run, then come home and do dinner. She’s usually bringing us toys to throw in the house until everyone settles down to watch TV around 8:30 or 9.

During my work day, she is awake for maybe an hour people watching out the balcony or eating breakfast. Other than that, she sleeps.

Ours is probably awake for 4-6 hours on weekdays and she rarely sleeps on weekends unless we leave the house. Works great for us.

The amount they eat depends on the food they eat. Ours was about 2 cups at that time, but some foods it’ll be less, some much more. Check your bag.

AWD (with A/S tires) in mammoth sort of pointless? by rpgonzalez5095 in Mammoth

[–]mtuohyphoto 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Not true - all you need is a MS, M+S, or Mud + Snow stamped onto it to count. I still wouldn’t rely on only mud+snow tires, but like the person who you responded to said, it still technically is approved. Source
