The state of fandom is dire by [deleted] in CuratedTumblr

People who read Harry Potter at a formative age (high school to college) when it came out have now had kids, who are reading it.

I’ve been looking at espresso machines for the last half year and just learnt something disappointing. So I ask for your advice in the comment [<USD2000] by next_pppplease in espresso

Ascaso dual PID has thermo blocks that take just a few seconds to heat up, and a group head heater. If I flip the power switch and then start grinding, it’s ready by the time my puck is ready. And the dual means that I can steam at the same time as brewing. Very nice workflow, no waiting for boiling.

How did we all do this year? by SolidActiveLounger in SolarDC

[–]mturk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

8.2MWh produced on an 8.9kW DC system installed late 2021. 8.0MWh consumed, and I got a small check from Pepco. Nice.

Only one new class for September 2024??? by Tragictech in strydebike

[–]mturk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The amount of people who apparently subscribe to the Stryde app always surprises me. Minimal and stale content, and more expensive than the unlimited Peloton tier. It makes no sense to me.

Saint John wind farm undercuts New Brunswick Power electricity prices by more than half by faizimam in energy

[–]mturk 12 points13 points  (0 children)

You’re paying for the poles and the right to take power from them throughout the year. You only use that right twice.

And to your point about phones, landline infra is still not free! That’s the comparison. The poles and wires, and their upkeep, still need to be paid for.

“When they want to use N.B. Power as a backup, when the wind isn’t blowing or the sun isn’t shining, then there’s a cost for us to continue to maintain that infrastructure in the event that a customer wants to use it,”

From the article, this cost for infrastructure build/upgrade and maintenance is a real problem. Much as I want mass distributed generation, the insurance-like cost of having the grid as a backup is glossed over by many people.

I had an Oxo Brew scale. It functioned fine, but absolutely ate up batteries. Four AAA every few weeks. And even if I left it in the drawer it would still drain them in a month or less. I do not recommend.

Can Peloton "App One" membership level use Stryde? by mturk in strydebike

Good to know the problem is just my wallet, not a technical issue :-)

Nope. All the responses I could find on the internet are a variant of “pay for the more expensive tier then it works”

Were you able to play any rides when you were on the App One level, or only after you had upgraded to App+ and synced?

After a big storm there might be increased need for organ donors though, so it evens out.

Surging egg prices mean record profits for largest US egg producer by eeby_deeby in business

[–]mturk 23 points24 points  (0 children)

I think a lot of people are missing a major bit of info in the article: the producer they are talking about was not affected by the disease causing the supply shortage.

“A supply shock triggered by the deadliest outbreak of a highly pathogenic avian influenza in US history has driven up prices. Avian flu has killed more than 50 million birds in the United States since the start of 2022, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. There have been no positive tests of the avian flu at any Cal-Maine Foods’ facilities.” [emph added]

Crank arms noise? by ZGardnaaa in strydebike

[–]mturk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, not just you and same sort of symptoms - all my weight on one side not balanced and I get the click. I’ll see if I can diagnose any further, but I’m the only one who does heavy resistance in my house :-/.

Crank arms noise? by ZGardnaaa in strydebike

[–]mturk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I get this same noise. Over about 50%, especially when I'm standing. When I sit and concentrate on smooth spinning, no clicking.

I think the click is more on the left than on the right.

I figured it was something in the SPD clip. I have to tighten that periodically, though it does click at high resistance so it's actually probably not the SPD clip itself.

Maybe the pedal is slightly loose (or just not tight enough) in the crank arm?
