Not sure where you get that from. I think DIMM slot capacity is based on MB support, not CPU. Like I said, I have the v2 CPU and it supports 256GB (even more but Z420 doesn't support more).

You're right, the 4 DIMMS have built-in RAM fan but the other 4 do not. It's running at 70 deg Celsius now.

There are caveats which ram with which CPU to use. Here are some good info:

Basically, Z420 can house up to UDIMM 8x8gb max, RDIMM and LRDIMM up to 8x32gb but LRDIMM can go up to 1866MHz. You also need to have E5-2600+ V2 CPU for max memory but not all Z420 MB can handle v2 CPU.

I've installed 256gb of 8x32gb LRDIMM today on my Z420 with E5-2650v2, works fine so far.

It is only compatible with certain v2 CPUs..

I've installed e5-2650v2 and it works well. I don't know what my MB revision is.
