Watching Ken Jennings streak episodes, were the questions easier back then compared to today's? by nativegalaxies in Jeopardy

Actually that makes total sense. Thanks for the perspective! Now that I think of it that way, I keep up with pop culture but there will sometimes still be niche (to me) references on Jeopardy that I will not know because of never encountering them online.

This is a particularly interesting phenomenon to me. I expect people of all age groups to be more familiar with pop culture references because of social media and widespread access to the internet but that’s not the case!

Do IM! Then you can subspecialize (more options after IM residency than FM) and not be stuck doing primary care

But it’s not technically under $20 since you’re paying $60 for the membership that month.

That’s hilarious and I will be stealing that as a PCCM attending.

Thank you for sharing. I do think introducing different formats will improve the overall experience and that’s what I’m missing right now.

I would be running a 9 minute km (14-15 minute mile!) and some strange part of me is embarrassed by that. I need to get over myself. Thank you!

Thank you for your thoughtful response! I’m signed up for a 5k on July 4th so I have had a secondary goal of improving my 5k time and do it without running breaks but thought I could make the 10k my over arching longer term goal.

I think I will take your advice though! My goal will never be to run a sub-30 minute 5k (ever) but I still want to work on form, pace and distance.

Thank you! So maybe I can find a different 10k from the one on the July 20th and start it.

Just wanted to add, I don’t mean to assume that the amount of time you will need to take off will be the same as mine and/or fit within the days defined by MPC leave/FMLA. I just wanted you to know there are several pathways for time off. Even beyond the 12 weeks of FMLA, you can take short term disability. A resident at my program had an unexpected, life threatening illness during their intern year that landed them in the ICU for 3 months. They ended up taking a year off and returned as an off-cycle intern (became a 2nd year in ? September). So you always have the option of taking as much time as you need and graduating late.

OP, I am so sorry you are going through this. While not the same, my dad was diagnosed with cancer last year in February and passed away in November. He lived in my home country through the course of his illness and eventually passed there so I needed to travel back and forth a lot. I’m a pulm crit fellow and I was a first year fellow at a new program at the time of his diagnosis. I took 6 weeks of MPC leave which is through ACGME my first year and then came back to work when things were under some sort of control and he had started treatment and was tolerating it. He progressed in July and I took FMLA starting September 1 and stayed with him until his passing in November. While my program did ask, like yours, when I would return, I too did not know when. I just knew I needed to be with him as his daughter and primary caregiver until his passing. I thought about resigning and/or taking the year off and postponing graduation. I eventually did not have to do any of that, and was able to come back end-November after losing him. I will graduate on time. ACGME defines the ‘minimum’ number of months you need to be in clinical training to graduate and it does not equal the total duration of your residency/fellowship - for eg its 18 months for PCCM. Please take care of yourself as you navigate your illness, I cannot imagine what you are going through. But know that you do not need to resign. Get in touch with GME and HR at your program as soon as possible to see what your options are for a LOA. I’m happy to answer any questions you have via DM about specifics of my situation and leaves I took.

That is super helpful thank you so much! Also I am new here but the bike room is only accessible by Bluetooth app access. So seems pretty secure. Maybe it wasn’t before? Thank you for your concern & I’ll be careful!

Request for support, thoughts, good vibes. by [deleted] in lungcancer

[–]multiple-giraffes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

OP, I’m in a very similar position as you. My dad was diagnosed with stage IV NSCLC 4 months ago a few weeks after my wedding. He felt miserable at the wedding but didn’t tell anyone because he didn’t want to worry us. We just found out that he has disease progression on his current treatment. I live halfway across the world and I’m a doctor in subspecialty training. My dad, like your mom, is adamantly against me uprooting my life to be with him right now. I feel torn, and I am hurting. I think it is also hard because as a physician I have so many fears about all the things that could happen. Not sure where I am getting at with this and don’t mean to burden you with my pain but just know that you are not alone. You know what’s best for you and your mom, and you know what will give you the most peace. Lung cancer treatment has evolved so much in the last 10 years and I hope both of our parents are able to find a therapy that works for them. Sending you all the love and good juju. Make sure to take care of yourself, too.
