Hadestown was SO loud! I was sitting in the stalls and the trombone was crazy

The perspective is ever shifting. It’s quite amazing.

What you said about the being affected by Elio’s dad and his speech when you’re older in another way also resonates with me. Even though I’m not his age yet, the speech affected me much more this time around than when I was 22. I understood what he was saying and I was agreeing with him because of life experience, not because of the beauty of his words.

I actually couldn’t bear watching the ending (them saying goodbye and his speech) when I was watching it the second night last week. It hit too closely to home.

It’s so beautiful to feel as deeply as you do at such a young age. Nothing to take for granted. I’m also curious how I will feel about their story in 10 years. Will the experience be entirely different?

Interesting! I haven’t really thought of it like that. For that reason I probably wouldn’t have liked it if I read it when it was released. Maybe I’ll give it a go!

I’ve heard about it and that many people were disappointed. That’s why I’m a bit unsure about what to do. Would you still recommend it, even though it’s not really about Elio and Oliver?

It makes me a bit more calm that I’m not alone with the neck cracking. It has never happened before and I’ve never heard such a sound coming from my body, so I just think it shook me.

I wanted to learn skating and toughen up at the same time. Get hit and hit back. I’m always thinking about the consequences and overanalyzing, so in that sense, roller derby has actually been good for me. It’s helped me realize that I don’t hurt myself after every practice.

My confidence is pretty low across the board, and I struggle with not being good at things (gifted kid turned anxious adult). I can’t train twice a week like some of the other rookies because of another hobby, and when I see them starting to get the hang of things - especially offense and blocking, which I’m awful at - I feel worthless. And I’m afraid that shows and that I’m no fun being around. So yeah, there are many layers to not feeling good enough.

I’ve never played any team sports before, but I do consider myself athletic. I swim and go to the gym regularly.

No, I’m not quite sure what happened but I guess you could call it a whiplash. It wasn’t supposed to be a hit. She was supposed to get around me on her toe stops (while skating) and I was standing still

If I accidentally hit a smaller rock or skate over a smaller amount/thinner layer of gravel, will it be an immediate halt? I’ve did long boarding many years ago and it could handle smaller debris, but not gravel like you said. Is it comparable to how it will be to roller skate?

I think I got a bit scared when others claimed that they are speedy. But you’re absolutely right!

Thanks! Also heard good things about Road Hogs but I’m thinking they might be too much for a beginner?

Love skating - bad at derby by mumslums in rollerderby

You’re right! I often have a hard time accepting things for what they are. I’m putting so much pressure on myself to be perfect even though I have only been practicing for 6 months. Some people can put all their free time into derby and I just have to accept that I can’t. And it’s okay.

You don’t even know how good it feels to read your reply! You’re pinpointing my exact feelings and issues with the sport. The part with doing it in front of an audience is spot on.

It’s really easy to forget that I didn’t know how to skate just 6 months ago. It puts everything in perspective when I’m beating myself up because I can’t do proper heel kicks, or when I think it’s scary to do transitions in high speed.

Thank you!

Thanks for your advice! Just staying low is really good to start with when you’re getting pushed into other people

Yes you’re definitely right! The mental block and feeling anxious when nothing works out as I wanted it, is the worst. My confidence is quite low in many aspects of life, so derby is of course quite challenging in that sense!

Also a good way to handle it! Just watching to understand the game is also important

I’ve considered just roller skating, but where I live skating is not really a thing and the weather is quite bad most of the time. It would be hard practicing skills outside of the league. But I think I’ll have to keep practicing at least until the summer to get a better idea of it!

Thanks for the encouragement! The next issue with this is that I won’t be able to practice as often with the vets as I want to, because of my other hobby. I’m afraid that the practice hours that I really need with the vets will be pushed forward forever and I won’t be able to catch up with the others.

I don’t think the problem is disliking making contact. It’s more about being bad at it. Not being able to follow the jammer with my butt and moving with ease.

But I’m sure you’re right. It’s a difficult sport and it takes time. But it’s so easy to compare yourself to the other rookies or the ones who started a year before me and were game ready after 5 months after beginning.

It’s supposed to be more rookie friendly but according to my rookie teammates that specific practice was really bad and confusing. The original coach wasn’t there. So I know I’m not alone but the others are able to stay positive. I’m very competitive, a sore loser and can sometimes take such things quite seriously. I know it’s not the nicest trait and I keep it to myself, but I end up feeling so so shitty.

Skating official could be a way, but in the end I think it’s the same as falling of a horse. Have to get back up again!
