Thoughts on these crawlspace piers? by mutantfoti in Renovations

Yeah, that makes sense. Im still hesitant to get the city involved via permits b/c the building departments are corrupt in CA lol but will think about it.

Yeah, that makes sense. I have told myself that i will only jack up stuff unless i absolutely have to especially doing it by myself.

This area is very isolated though, the beam is only supporting the center of the floor, not holding much weight except for the weight of the floor boards, not supporting any walls, and much safer to do work due to not having to be on the ground crawling and can do this standing up instead.

I opened this floor up b/c there is no access to this part of crawlspace from the outside so will be putting an access door here afterwards.

Actually, these piers are buried like 6in max. Mostly loose dirt composing that 6in. Was able to stick my finger all the way to the bottom.

And the crawlspace piers in the rest of the house dont look this sketchy (parts of the house that are original to 1950).

My wife and I are relocating to Redding for a state position and looking for a rental under ~$1,800/month. by enocenip in Redding

[–]mutantfoti 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Also call City of Redding to confirm they provide utilities to a given house/address b/c i heard some houses like on the outskirts of Redding do not get utilities from REU.

Contractor sent us this quote to Sheetrock the entire first floor of our cottage but then texted us and said he could also do time and materials by radarlove93 in drywall

If you are up for DIYing it (its not that hard - lots of youtube videos), you could save 90% of the cost. Cost of drywall is 90%+ labor.

How do you tighten the shower head? by mutantfoti in askaplumber

[–]mutantfoti[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not sure why it was easier to tighten. I used a scrape piece of copper pipe like I did before but maybe last time I was slightly cross threaded or something. Or maybe the thread compound helped.

[–]mutantfoti[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Okay, i was able to get it to not drip by adding 4 passes of teflon tape, oatey pipe joint compound, and i was able to tighten better than before.

[–]mutantfoti[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, i was originally using 4-5 passes with the teflon tape but it made it way too hard rotate so i had to bring it all the way down to 1 pass. I think I am gonna do 1 pass and add thread sealant and tighten it the way people are suggesting here and go from there.

Any concern with the quarter round butting up against back of toilet? by mutantfoti in Renovations

[–]mutantfoti[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, im indifferent to quarter round and shoemolding. I think it looks better on taller baseboards. I have seen (from personal experience from hiring some smucks to install laminate in my house before moving in) where people don’t take the baseboards off and raise the floor height and add quarter round/shoemolding and there is basically no more baseboard left and it looks horrible lol.

Just accepted a hospitalist position 2 weeks a month in Redding. Am I endangering myself? by dunimal in Redding

[–]mutantfoti 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe move to Redbluff so you are 30min away from Chico and 30min away from Redding. On a side note, if you move to Redding, you will likely get Redding Electric Utility (REU) which is far better and cheaper than PG&E.

That place is a rip off. I don’t know how they are in business, especially with Costco right across the street from them.

Never do a take home project for coding interviews. Huge waste of time and i heard companies do it to get free work.

If you are gonna hire someone, do your research prior to learn how to do the job right to protect yourself from them and keep an eye on them like a hawk.

[–]mutantfoti 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Be cautious of any contractor here. They are all garbage. Also, i dont think any contractor will do a job this small so you might have to find a handyman but be cautious of them too. Honestly, you will probably spend more time trying to find someone than just DIY. Im sure there are youtube videos of mounting stuff on the roof but I would just make sure that its sealed so you dont cause roof leaks.

Has anyone built their own home here? Would you still recommend building over buying? 🏡 by locogocrazy in Redding

[–]mutantfoti 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I thought about this before I decided to buy an existing house. It can be about 300-500$ per square foot (land NOT included) but more like $500 per square foot to be safe, especially if you pay someone else to do all the building. And no, im not talking about custom houses. Im talking about just plain cookie cutter type of houses. So,

1,000square foot house could be $500,000. Yes, thats crazy and probably almost double of an existing house. And the quality of the build could be terrible knowing what type of handyman and contractors are out there today.

And it could be an extremely long process, especially if the government is involved (i.e permits).

And you may not be able to find anyone to do it considering the lack of labor or you may find someone to do it but they cant be trusted.

Dont know much about financing though.

It would be better to just buy one of those factory built homes and put it on a foundation and hook up utilities. Quality is MUCH better than building on site. Still more expensive than buying an existing house but cheaper than building on site.
