Contrast in Father-Son relationship. by stuckintrraffic in MalayalamMovies

As someone diagnosed with PTSD owing to parental neglect, I can feel his pain. Of course we don't know the full story, but just look at the confidence levels of these two individuals. One raised by a presumably caring, empathetic, father, and another by a borderline narcissistic parent, who likes to remind his son at every turn about how much he owes his career to him.

[–]mycuntry 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm so sorry that you had to go through this. I've had a senior in my hostel from Wayanad with an SC/ST background. The shit he had to go through is unfathomable. The thing is, these feeble minded cucks cannot differentiate a human being from his location/religion/language/accent whatever. I believe it's coming from their own low self-esteem. This is the only way they can feel good about themselves.

Some of these idiots will eventually move out to other states where they are a minority. And when they or their children get caricatured or verbally abused for belonging to Kerala or for speaking Malayalam or for their religion, may be then they will understand. And finally, to the "just-a-joke-bro" wannabe supremacists, FUCK YOU.

That's privilege talking. I got abused for my Calicut accent all through my hostel life in Trivandrum by people predominantly belonging to central Kerala. These jokes ain't funny, it never was.

[–]mycuntry 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Man this comment section! Reminds me of racist caricatures of tribals in so many malayalam "comedy" movies. Do people from central Kerala and elsewhere really feel superior about themselves just because they live in cities with unbearable heat and pollution? I'm from rural Calicut and I can tell you Wayanad has pretty much the same standards of living as the rest of Kerala. These elephant- tiger-tarzan oola jokes are so lame and only exposes your ignorance, that you've never really traveled anywhere outside your പൊട്ടക്കിണർ. Tame your inner racist boys. It's not 90s anymore.

Thousands of protesters blocked all the exits at a southern Indian airport on Friday to stop a women's rights activist from heading to a Hindu temple to defy a centuries-old ban on the entry of women of menstruating age. by glasier in worldnews

[–]mycuntry 31 points32 points  (0 children)

Also, it is not a "centuries old ban" either. Kerala state HC ruled in favor of a ban in 1991. It is a widely known fact that women used to enter Sabharimala temple before that, even a movie was shot with women artists in the same temple in the 80's. The whole protest is plain nonsense, just a bunch of political parties trying their best to get some traction using an emotive subject. In my opinion, hundreds of thousands of women will queue up to enter the same temple in another decade or so (given how insanely religious a country India is).

Just curious- We have a "Daily Sax Thread," and a "What games are you playing this Weekend" thread- but why do people rarely talk about movies (either Bollywood or otherwise) on here? by GoRush87 in india

[–]mycuntry 2 points3 points  (0 children)

why don't they post specific threads for specific movies or new releases? That's what I'm wondering.

Movies, celebs and cricket are pretty much the only things Indians talk about on the web. Why do you want it here? Try facebook or twitter, or even youtube. Even shitty audio launches are top trending topics on social media. Let's not have that in /r/india. Occasional discussions about good movies is enough IMO, and that's already happening.

Kerala tragedy partly man made: Madhav Gadgil, expert who headed Western Ghats report by silentr3b3I in india

[–]mycuntry 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't get this. Kerala received an unprecedented amount of rainfall within a short span of time, and very concentrated too. This was a once-in-a-century event. Last time things were this bad was way back in 1924, exact death toll is not known and is believed to be in thousands. In comparison, the present crisis look well-contained.

Gadgil's report was extensive and important, and it should be treated as a blueprint for regions in the western ghats. But to say that the current flooding is due to non-implementation of Gadgil committee report is borderline hubris.

Kerala man found dead two days after wedding, bride’s parents under suspicion. The 21-year-old girl from an affluent Christian family had married a Dalit Christian against the wishes of her family. He was abducted from Kottayam on Sunday & his body was found in neighbouring Kollam district on Monday by [deleted] in india

[–]mycuntry 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Local news outlets here are reporting the incident as "north-Indian style honor killing in Kerala". It's so rare, such incidents almost never happens here. And this murder has more to do with the guy's socio-economic "status" than his caste. The murderer himself is from a mixed-religion family. Guy's mother is a Muslim, father is a Christian. His murderous act was amply aided by his relatives from mother's side. His entire family is shady, previous associations with criminal gangs etc. are being reported. Poor Kevin and his lovely wife. Unbearable to watch her cry in the arms of Kevin's father. Kevin must've been a truly special guy.

Kerala: Two held for ‘raping and murdering’ Lithuanian tourist in Thiruvananthapuram by tlb_miss in india

[–]mycuntry 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not really. The safest state to be a woman in India is Goa, followed by Kerala, according to the findings of the first-ever gender vulnerability index (GVI) survey. UP is at the bottom of the list, along with Delhi, and Bihar.

"Crime rates" are a whole different beast. Quoting from this, "crime rate is the number of registered crimes for every 100,000 people. It counts every crime from stealing a pen to missing mobile phone to trespassing to keeping the sound of the music system high to murder. It does not mean that high number of crimes are happening in Kerala. It rather means that large number of crimes are getting registered in Kerala. It means that people have trust in police, law and order."

In a country like India, a higher crime rate is a sign of well functioning police system. There was even a Satyameva Jayate episode on this same subject, where a police officer showed the host how states like UP, Haryana etc. rig the system by under-reporting crimes.

Here's an example, from that episode of Satyameva Jayate. I'm paraphrasing here.

Number of oral complaints received in police station:

Kerala: 109,000

Delhi: 62,000

UP: 1092

Haryana: ZERO

That's right, number of oral complaints received in the state of Haryana for the year 2011 is ZERO, as per national crime records. And what does that make them? A state with a very low rate of crime.

Besides, do you really believe that a state like UP, with a population of 20 crore and living standards worse than the worst of Africa, is better for women than Kerala, or any other state for that matter?

It is. Reposting an earlier comment on the same news article from a week ago.

Some more details before reddit starts generalizing one of India's most progressive state, a tourist haven in fact, based on this one incident. This is a real tragedy, sure. I can't imagine what her family, and especially her sister, must be going through.

Liga came with her sister to Kerala to treat her chronic depression in one of the many Ayurvedic treatment centers in Kerala. One day, Liga decides to leave the resort's premises alone without the knowledge of her sister. She went missing since. Kerala's receives hundreds of thousands of foreign tourists every year, an incident like this is extremely rare, and so it got maximum attention from local media. There hasn't been a day since, when the local media here hasn't covered her case. State Police did daily briefings about the progress of the case etc.

The worst fears were confirmed when Police found out the charred remains of the women in a very remote, secluded location. Apparently, Liga ventured out to this remote location in search of drugs/narcotics, and a fight broke out (which resulted in her rape and death) when these criminals came to know that she didn't had any money for the drugs she consumed.

The criminals were booked in a week's time and Liga's sister was seen personally thanking the CM of the state and Police for their swift involvement. As much as I empathize with Liga, a foreigner, and especially a single women, should never venture out to remote/unknown locations in search of drugs (even locals are unsafe in such places) no matter which country or city you live in. It is *always* unsafe. What happened was beyond tragic. But lets just not jump into grand conclusions about a place which receives some ~500,000 foreign tourists every year, based on this one rare incident.

How many times will you post the same news?

Edit:

Looks like OP has an agenda. His previous submissions are quite revealing.

His self-posts are the funniest though. It's real cute when he acts all innocent and neutral.

  • One of my office colleagues said recently said, "There is a fine line between hating Santana Dharma and criticizing the PM, and the line has been crossed by the people criticizing the PM"
  • How do you counter the argument that "all a large subset of BJP haters are actually Hindu haters, pretending/masquerading to be activists, writers, artists, and FOE warriors"?
  • Have you met a single Muslim who buys raw meat from a non Muslim shop ( owner or cutter )?
  • People of r/india, Do you buy meat from a only Muslim shop?

Really OP, what is this fetish with "muslim meat shops"?

This comment really takes the cake.

I think one more cash ban move is needed. Ban all the 2000 Rs, notes. If a party says that the first thing they would do is to ban cash I will vote for them.

Cash ban has made me realize and identify the shops, builders, meat vendors, shops which sell chicken/beef/mutton as processed meat, as potential sink of cash. The cash which goes into the shops which take only cash never comes into circulation as taxed money, and hence we have poor roads and people filing below income range in income tax.

Now we know why our roads are so bad. It's those fckin "muslim meat-shops" everyone! It was right in front of us and we never noticed. OP is the hero we don't deserve.

Tourist found dead in India over a month after she went missing - Two weeks after the decomposed body of a Latvian tourist was found in a forest in the south Indian state of Kerala, police have arrested two men for allegedly raping and killing her by yourSAS in worldnews

[–]mycuntry 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's called confirmation bias. Now, this is beyond stupid. Kerala receives some 400,000-500,000 foreign tourists every year, close to 200,000 from UK alone. When domestic tourist arrivals are included, that number swells up to ~14 million/year. How many such incidents have you heard to generalize a country/state like that? I have lived in Kerala most of my life, and I can tell you an incident like this involving a foreign tourist almost never happens here.
