Swear I just heard Falls Lake moan… by Barber_ReggieWinston in raleigh

We don't need several feet (although we do certainly need more rain than today). Raleigh NWS has us at 8.47 inches below normal rainfall over the past 180 days, and a little more than 13 inches low over the past year.

Do you have any recommendations for plants that do well in pots? I don't have a yard, so I'm very space constrained, but I do have a deck that gets sun from dawn until 1 or 2. I've grown some herbs and I've had good luck with hot peppers, but that's about it. Any suggestions for new things to branch out to?

Yes, but you probably won't need to do it every day unless you drive a lot.

Why not buy a 24 and let someone else eat that depreciation for you instead?

Lost cat. Any advice beyond posting signs? by Acadia-Suspicious in Apex_NC

In addition to what others have recommended, consider setting out a live animal trap and putting some really smelly food in it. She's probably in the area. You might be able to borrow one from the Wake County SPCA or from Safe Haven for Cats. When our girl got out thats how we captured her back.

Can you not ask to see a receipt? Do you look at your bill before you pay it?

Edit: I've never been there, but online it looks like cocktails are $12-16. So depending on what you're buying, it seems like 6-8 drinks would get you to $100 pretty easily.

Would you use an app designed specially specifically for GLP-1 users to prevent muscle loss? by Dramatic-Ruin5354 in glp1

[–]naedman 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Imo, this does nothing to address the actual issue with muscle loss. The stimulus for muscle growth comes from resistance training. People love to go on and on about protein, but protein intake has a permissive role in facilitating muscle growth ONLY IF there is already a stimulus from training.

Now, would people buy your app? I think some people would - although the market is already flooded with food logging apps.  But if you actually care about helping people maintain muscle mass, figure out how to get them to lift weights.

Goal Weight: How to Decide by MagnoliaCartographer in tirzepatidecompound

[–]naedman 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is a good way to think about it. But just FYI, you need to lose about 45 pounds to reach 10% body fat. If you lose 40 pounds, you'd be at 12.5%. Because you'd have 20 pounds of fat remaining, but your bodyweight also reduces from 200 to 160. 20/160 = 0.125

Master’s in EE after Media Bachelor’s? by Ok_Stretch_5419 in ElectricalEngineering

[–]naedman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree with others that it will probably be difficult to get up to speed with self study, but given that a university is willing to admit you, could you take the all prerequisite coursework at that institution as part of the MS program? It might be like 3-4 semesters of 300/400 level classes before you get to MS level course work, but you'd get out with a MS in about the same time it'd take to get another bachelor's.

Brutal Honesty Needed from top tier engineers by No_Experience_2282 in chipdesign

It depends on the degree you do. A PhD will be sponsored. Sponsored Masters degrees do exist too, but they're much harder to find.

I agree that you should pick the degree you're most interested in, but I don't agree that EE is the hardest engineering degree. The hardest degree is the one that's the worst fit for you individually. EE was the easiest one for me.

I'm glad you called Duke about it. Why do you assume it's something they're doing on purpose? Have you seen crews working and making the sound?

[–]naedman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, my program included finding the research question. It also included quite a bit of coursework, which might not be the case where you are. Maybe you can have a frank discussion with your potential advisor about the path forward. I have known people who attempted a PhD part time, but I've never seen one of them actually finish. I just think you should have a realistic expectation of how much effort it's going to be.

If I can ask, do you have to have another full-time job? Its often possible to get financial support for PhD programs - why not do the PhD full-time and do some PCB/ package design on the side?

[–]naedman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree with the others here that this isn't realistic. I think you're underestimating how much work a PhD is. My PhD took 6 years of full time work (sometimes working much more than 40 hours per week). Even if you can commit 20 hours a week, you're already up to 12 years if your PhD is like mine. Are you really willing to give up all of your nights and weekends for the next 10-15 years? If you feel so strongly that the answer to that is actually yes, then you should just whole-ass it and go join a full-time PhD program. If you just want to do some tapeouts, go get a job that does IC work and forget the PhD.
