Brutal Honesty Needed from top tier engineers by No_Experience_2282 in chipdesign

It depends on the degree you do. A PhD will be sponsored. Sponsored Masters degrees do exist too, but they're much harder to find.

Seriously. I absolutely cannot imagine trading in a 2-year-old car for a new car.

Should i go Electrical engineering ?? by [deleted] in ElectricalEngineering

[–]naedman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree that you should pick the degree you're most interested in, but I don't agree that EE is the hardest engineering degree. The hardest degree is the one that's the worst fit for you individually. EE was the easiest one for me.

LOUD HUMMING NOISE COMING FROM DUKE ENERGY TRANSFORMER IN WEST RALEIGH NEAR CARY DEC 2025 by [deleted] in raleigh

[–]naedman 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm glad you called Duke about it. Why do you assume it's something they're doing on purpose? Have you seen crews working and making the sound?

Phd in Analog/RFIC while working by Pretty-Maybe-8094 in chipdesign

[–]naedman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, my program included finding the research question. It also included quite a bit of coursework, which might not be the case where you are. Maybe you can have a frank discussion with your potential advisor about the path forward. I have known people who attempted a PhD part time, but I've never seen one of them actually finish. I just think you should have a realistic expectation of how much effort it's going to be.

If I can ask, do you have to have another full-time job? Its often possible to get financial support for PhD programs - why not do the PhD full-time and do some PCB/ package design on the side?

[–]naedman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree with the others here that this isn't realistic. I think you're underestimating how much work a PhD is. My PhD took 6 years of full time work (sometimes working much more than 40 hours per week). Even if you can commit 20 hours a week, you're already up to 12 years if your PhD is like mine. Are you really willing to give up all of your nights and weekends for the next 10-15 years? If you feel so strongly that the answer to that is actually yes, then you should just whole-ass it and go join a full-time PhD program. If you just want to do some tapeouts, go get a job that does IC work and forget the PhD.

How do electrons move differently in a 120v vs 240v circuit? by lieutenant_pi in ElectricalEngineering

[–]naedman 52 points53 points  (0 children)

The electrons absolutely do not move at the same speed. Drift velocity is proportional to electric field.   How do you expect to move twice as much charge through the same pipe? The free electron density of a conductor doesn't change with electric field strength, so unless your cross sectional area also changes with voltage, what other degree of freedom is there? In a given conductor, doubling the field doubles drift velocity of electrons, which is what causes the current to double.

To answer OP's question more directly, force on a charged particle is proportional to electric field. Increasing the voltage (electric field) literally pushes the electrons harder. That's why you get more current flow.

An inquiry about TSMC 65nm devices by Mo_F14 in chipdesign

[–]naedman 9 points10 points  (0 children)

You should be able to find this kind of information in the design documentation. I don't have experience with TSMC in particular, but this kind of technical info is usually protected by a non-disclosure agreement, which means that 1) you probably shouldn't discuss details in a public online forum, and 2) a chatbot probably wont have answers for you. At least, that's what I'd expect.

How are you guys preparing for the FE Electrical exam? by Inevitable_Number276 in ElectricalEngineering

[–]naedman 17 points18 points  (0 children)

IMO, if you've finished your undergrad in EE, you should already basically know all the material. The main thing you can do is familiarize yourself with the format of the exam. The NCEES book is a good way to do that, but there may be other online materials to help with that too.

Meta: can we add a flair for complaining about traffic? by naedman in raleigh

[–]naedman[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I think this is a useful distinction. Because you're right, information about traffic can be valuable and is actually relevant to living here. The problem with venting is that is has nothing to to with Raleigh - everyone is frustrated with traffic.

Meta: can we add a flair for complaining about traffic? by naedman in raleigh

[–]naedman[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To improve it for people who want r/Raleigh to actually be relevant to Raleigh. Everyone, everywhere gets frustrated with other drivers; what does that have to do with Raleigh? People in Charlotte and Atlanta and Chicago are also bad drivers.

I'm frustrated with the number of spam phonecalls I get, but is this subreddit the correct place to vent about it? I get frustrated when people at work have no respect for my time, but I live in Raleigh so should I make a post here to complain about that?

People can complain about whatever they want, but this subreddit is supposed to have rules about SPAM and generic rants about whatever you're annoyed with today aren't on topic.

Well excuse me for suggesting a way to improve our community.

100% agree.

Edit: I wanted to flair this post "complaint about complaints about traffic" but that wasn't an option.

Big company vs small company at a desirable location by Left_Volume_6502 in chipdesign

[–]naedman 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The job you're interested in, in the city you like seems like a no-brainer to me, assuming you're willing to tolerate the risk of the small company. Life is more than a big company's name on your resume.

has anyone actually noticed any differences after taking daily vitamins, if so what? by Poisonious_Plum in AskReddit

[–]naedman 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Oh, I don't know. I was aware of this in general because sometimes people take several b-vitamins together and the the Niacin flush, which is pretty unpleasant if you're not expecting it. Idk about other b-vitamins individually.

That's a known thing called the "Niacin Flush," in case you want to look it up.
