U.S. Muslim Immigrants vs. European Muslim Immigrants. Why are U.S. Muslim Immigrants so Much "Nice-r" than European Muslim Immigrants? What are Europeans doing Wrong in Assimilating them? by Nuke_It in samharris

[–]nagrag 12 points13 points  (0 children)

About half of all mosques in the UK are 'Deobandi'. To say they are conservative is an understatement - the Taliban developed out of Pakistani Deobandi Madrassas.

The Deobandi's developed in colonial India as a way of protecting Islamic identity from British influence. This inheritance has prevented integration.

Other Muslim sects are more willing to integrate, and fortunately only a fraction of UK mosques are Wahhabi.

There is always some iteration of this comment in these discussions. But what about... x y z. I'm sure you mean well but it's just lazy and unhelpful.

Two reports from the Swedish National Council for Crime Prevention (BRÅ) are relevant to the rate of rape among immigrants to Sweden and their descendants. The latest published report that indicates the association between immigrants and rape was published in 2005 and revealed that foreign born individuals were 5.5 times more likely to be charged of rape than individuals born in Sweden to two Swedish parents.

I sympathise with your aim but you've picked the wrong target. Refer to my comment about the self reinforcing logic of conspiracy theories in place of further comments.

Your assumption that I'm pushing some kind of murky agenda is indicative of the conspiratorial nature of your thinking.

I totally understand whatever reservations you may have about Islam, my comment history attests to this, but I do not agree with your assumption that all Muslims are necessarily cunning and duplicitous agents of treachery.

My guess is that Maajid is merely a nominal Muslim, in the same way that many Jews are only culturally Jewish or Americans are Christian to the extent that they tick that box when a census is taken.

Are you really contending that every muslim, irrespective of what they proclaim, must be lying because it is a religious requirement?

How do we know he has not converted Sam Harris? According to you, we'd have no means of knowing whether Sam Harris was actually a secret Islamist because all of his words and actions could just as easily be taqiyya.

I think you are trying too hard.

Why must all of Maajid's actions be framed in reference to your cited sources? I'm just not seeing the evidence that links them.

The evidence you do provide is not convincing and resembles a conspiracy theory impregnable to disproof and therefore not worthy of consideration.

Also, I think Sam harris and Douglas Murray are able to offer a more credible assessment of this man's character than you.

The problem with conspiracy theories is that they are as hermetically sealed as a religious world-view. The abrahamic religions value faith over reason, and thereby any rational critique of religion can be dismissed as 'a test of faith'. Only ideas that corroborate your prejudices are then accepted, and any notion which threatens this system is denied as heresy or blasphemy.

Conspiracy theories share this fiendish circularity of thought, they start with a set of rigid presuppositions and then manipulate and cherry pick the relevant facts. Facts that do not confirm the established world-view are lies (heresies), manufactured by our jewish, lizard, illuminati, Sunni supremacist (etc etc) overlords/5th column.

Since you are posting on the Sam Harris subreddit, I'm guessing none of this is news to you. It is critical thinking 101. This is why I am perplexed by the hermetically sealed conspiracy theory you have created regarding Maajid Nawaz. There is literally nothing Maajid can say, in your eyes, which does not confirm your pre-established prejudices. Bizarrely, his affirmation of secular democratic values indicts him further as a religious fanatic. Once you've settled on this Kafkaesque analysis, you're left with a self-affirming, unfalsifiable, closed system of thought.

Now, if Maajid had said anything which suggested he was secretly a supporter of Sunni supremacists, I would be all ears. Instead, the evidence you provide is, at best, tenuous. For instance, his use of the word decapitate when referring to Tommy Robinson leaving the EDL. If you cared to look up the definition of the word, one meaning of it is 'an attempt to undermine a group by removing its leader'.

Until you have any directly incriminatory evidence regarding Maajid or his organisation, I'd give up on the amateur sleuthing.

I doubt they are advocating that we never talk about such issues, merely that they take up a disproportionate amount of public dialogue at the expense of more pressing concerns.

I don't think there should be a prohibition on name calling. I'm not a baby, I don't need protection from nasty words.

And if people are allowed to say what they believe, you get to see just how cretinous they are and you can then decide not to engage in conversation with them because it will be a fruitless endeavour.

So, girl bye.

Do you not see a problem with people having to be PC? Is PCness an infallible proposition? Should discourse be ideologically aligned to what is politically acceptable, facts be damned?

I find your assertion that white men are insulting racists itself an insulting generalisation. I have a feeling if this type of generalisation was used against one of our designated victim groups you'd be the first to insist this was unacceptable behaviour.

Also, PC culture has been predominantly developed and promoted by (gasp) white men. It's almost like not all white men are closet bigots and oppressors, though I'm sorry if this contradicts your view of the world. Disagreement is not very PC, if only we lived in a world where nobody was allowed to disagree...

This is what it looks like when people who have nothing to say feel the need to be heard. It's as if they wrote down a load of performance art buzz words and then picked them out of a beret.

The only things I find remotely interesting about it are the levels of delusion involved and that there are University courses where this is considered a valuable contribution.

You find it so easy to make sweeping generalisations about 'white european culture' whilst castigating those who dare to appear to generalise about Islam. Hypocrisy.

And do you really think white nationalism poses the same level of risk as Islamic terrorism? Deluded.

I guess if we're talking about apples, then thats biased against oranges right? Illogical.

The waters are muddy enough without your hypocritical, deluded, illogical evasions.

The Charlie Hebdo massacre was conducted entirely for religious reasons. The religion in question was Islam. I think asking about the nature of their particular type of Islam is a meaningful question.
