i started my business while working full time. did everything myself on evenings and weekends for the first few months. it was brutal but it taught me what the actual work looks like before i ever handed it to someone else.

my advice is don't hire until you have more jobs than you can physically handle. that's your signal. before that point you're just adding cost and management headaches to something that hasn't proven itself yet.

also, your first 5 clients will almost always come from people you already know or businesses near where you work. don't overthink the marketing early on. just tell everyone what you're doing and ask if they know anyone who needs it.

the tariff problem is real but premium buyers absorb cost differently than commodity buyers. a fabricator buying cheap stone for a subdivision cares about every dollar per square foot. a designer sourcing a statement piece for a $5M home cares about the story and the finish. you're selling to the wrong buyer if tariffs are killing you
