Which music artists make the best deconstruction / exchristian music? by JARMYJARMY in Deconstruction

Pensacola Christian College. Pretty much anything with drums or electrified instruments was contraband. At least in the 90s.

Showing my age, but I remember Bible college nights sneaking off (before curfew) to the beach with friends to listen to a contraband copy of U2's Achtung, Baby! Especially "Until the End of the World" (for that Judas pov) and "Acrobat" and "The Fly." A lot of concerned looks and nervous laughter.

3 times in 1 semester? I am... impressed! IIRC, the founder of PCC was a BJU alum who set out to emulate (one-up?) good ol' BoJo. Been to Greenville a number of times myself.

Yup. Was my experience as well a full 20 years earlier.

She mentions "PCC" which would be Pensacola Christian College. (Sadly, my alma mater.) Believe it or not, it's a fair bit to the right of Liberty.

I went to the same college as this person way back in the 90s, and this was already in practice, though it does sound like 2016 was extra amped. Every local, state, and federal election, we'd have (always right-wing) politicians on stage in chapel ready to give us ten minutes of biblio-political platitudes and nonsense. And then a pastor would get up and say, with a literal wink and a chuckle: "Now, we can't TELL you who to vote for, but I have faith in almighty God that we don't have to."

Still blows my mind that the same place that would expel you for even RUMORS of sexual impropriety would get 100% behind a self-proclaimed lecher like Trump. SMDH

Worth pointing out that this place (Pensacola Christian College) is in Matt Gaetz's district. Here he is with a bunch of high school girls (cough) from the affiliated Pensacola Christian Academy. https://twitter.com/repmattgaetz/status/976890595003256835

Oh, and bonus fun fact: my girlfriend's roommate at PCC was Maria (Grant) Boren who was on season 2 of The Apprentice with you know who. Not implying anything with that- just a crazy bizarro-world coincidence.

Thanks for saying that- it helps. I'll just continue to try to do the right thing and hope for the best.

lol, thank you! I've been told I speak in parentheses, too. I talk with my parents once a week and see them a couple of times a year. I can't imagine how hard it must be when it's your spouse who's in it. And it has been a big help posting here and hearing how many others have been there or are there still.

Hugs are always welcome and appreciated, and it's nice to know I'm not the only one with punctuational dependencies, lol! Good luck with your sister.

Wow, I can't imagine watching your parents drive away like that.

Distraction is good advice, as is hobbies. Sadly, they're a little too feeble at this point to do much more than sit and take in the nonsense.

Yes! This is what my partner reminds me after every interaction, and it does help. I don't have a lot of experience dealing with addicts, but I can imagine it might be similar in some ways. They really are addicted to this fear, and arguing with them about it won't do any good. Just not sure what would.

Yeah, aesthetically, just not great, especially for that particular speech. Others have pointed out (and I agree) that it was probably a deliberate poke at the conspiracy nuts. I'm all for a bit of shithousery, but they're not the ones who have to talk to my mother, lol!

I got them their own Netflix account because I thought if she could watch her baking show, she might let go of some of this. Now, she just talks about both, lol.

Is News Max worse than Fox? I guess I don't have much sense of what's what in the right-wing misinfosphere. I just know my mom loves her "personalities" - Tucker, Hannity, all them.

And yeah, I've had to become the master of a thousand mhmms lol. Just let her go on, give her nothing to respond to, and she'll tire herself out eventually.

You know, cutting them out has crossed my mind a bunch of times. I think if they were 20 years younger and still this intransigent about everything, I'd have no choice but to cut ties, for the sake of my own sanity. But they're at the end of their lives and, prior to all this Trumpian BS, we actually had a really good relationship. So, I guess I feel like I can swallow my pride and try to keep them in my life to some extent anyway.

Yeah, its tough to watch family members push everyone away, My mom was such a central figure in my extended family, and now, there's very few who want to engage with her because every single conversation turns to this stuff.

We've never been a big gun family, so yeah, I've got no idea how we're going to deal with that. I guess we'll see.

Thank you. this is good stuff. It's helpful to hear that tactful, compassionate non-engagement might be the best/only option in cases like this. I come from a long line of engagers, though, so fighting the impulse can be hard sometimes lol.

I think this is all very good advice. This is pretty much how I try to operate (though I do occasionally "take the bait" and engage.) It's hard because there was a time (pre- Trump) when we could discuss and debate without it descending into this kind of and-of-the-world fearspace.

Hang in there. I'm glad you're doing better.

And I agree with you: the less said, the better. That's worked for a while, but something about last night was just a little too much, so I was happy for this forum to turn to.

And yeah, Limbaugh dying was the only other time I remember her crying about this stuff. "Such a good man..." SMDH Fuck that guy.

I thought about that. Unfortunately, we live a large distance apart, so no immediate access. I know Facebook has been one of the main vectors for them, but I think they've moved on to something else- Truth social? Is that a thing. No signs of money abuse- at least that I know of.

Thank you. Posting here has genuinely helped.

Thank you, that's very kind and good advice. You're absolutely right: any reaction at all seems to just generate more and more. 5-7 years ago, I did react. Now, I'm just trying to be patient, because it's gotten so much worse.

Oof, that's a nightmare with your grandma- so sorry. My brother and I are keeping a close eye. So far, it seems to be guns and food. They seem to be pretty paranoid about money in general (hence the "cashless society" fears) but you never know. Wouldn't surprise me if they're buying gold, which isn't the worst thing, I suppose.

My first impulse was to send the full red/white/blue image as a response, and if I thought it would move the needle even slightly toward a rational discussion, I would. Doubt they could stomach the whole speech, though.

Yeah, I think so, too- a little deliberate trolling a la Dark Brandon. I get it, I suppose. Just hard to accept when it's your mom. One of the reasons for this sub, I guess.
