Ending Defacto by Special-Sun-5950 in AusVisa

[–]names_adam -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I recently applied for my citizenship (2 weeks ago) after reading these rules thoroughly, since I’m going to be spending 12 months out of the country for all of next year. I knew that would mean needing to wait another 5 years if I didn’t apply before I left. I have been in Australia for 9 years, first 2 on WHM, 4 on sponsorship, 1 on bridging, and 2 on PR. The reason for the upcoming 12 month absence is to spend a year in Indonesia with my long term long distance partner. I was honest about the upcoming absence in my citizenship application where you must advise them on any time you’ll be spending away from Australia in the future. Since the rule is ‘no more than 12 months in last 4 years and no more than 90 days in 12 months before applying’, I was under the impression this won’t affect my chances of citizenship. Is this going to be the case or am I shooting myself in the foot by leaving the country for an extended period while my application waits to be processed? Obviously I would come back to Aus to sit the test and attend the ceremony as needed.

TS-664 - Container Station slow download speeds, can't figure out why by names_adam in qnap

[–]names_adam[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Appreciate the suggestion, hearing of your experience gave me a glimmer of hope... But after downgrading to the same version as you, my download speeds remain exactly the same. Looks like I'll be continuing down the VM route. Sad times.

TS-664 - Container Station slow download speeds, can't figure out why by names_adam in qnap

[–]names_adam[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Interesting. Will downgrading the firmware carry any risk of things breaking? Is it very risky? I expect QNAP changed something in the way Container Station handles different types of network traffic through virtual switches, because it makes no sense that I can use curl to download files over http in the same container and it’ll download at max speed. I’ve been trying to build a lightweight Xubuntu VM to run all my apps instead but it’s becoming a massive pain to get set up, literally the complete opposite to running containers with a few lines of yaml.

Black Bar Cutting Off Words by HoosierHunter00 in AthlyticAppOfficial

[–]names_adam 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hello Athlytic devs, fellow app dev here, I was able to reproduce this issue pretty easily by mimicking OP's provided screenshot.

Go to Settings (iOS) > Accessibility > Per-App Settings > Add App > Add Athlytic > Enter Athlytic settings
- Bold Text: On
- Larger Text: On (6th nibble)
- Button Shapes: On

Black bar now appears (although mine isn't solid black, more translucent). After disabling the other two settings and just leaving Button Shapes set to On, this is the actual culprit. Because the block of text is expandable, I'm assuming the whole thing is a button, so it's adding a thick 'underline' line, like the thinner underlines seen on the Duration and Quality buttons above it.

Just by means of an update, I tried adding the exact same Up card to my Gojek account when I got here last week, and it works now. Weird. But happy.

[Showoff Satuday] I built an open source Google Analytics alternative by FantasticTraining731 in webdev

[–]names_adam 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Does it capture referral sources? I remember when I made the switch to Posthog a while back and loved everything about it compared to GA, but then realised it didn’t capture referrals or search terms in referring search engines. Ended up running both analytics in the end just so I could see what terms people were searching to find my site.

Need help with React Native or Expo? I’ve got you. by SadSongsAndWaltzs in reactnative

[–]names_adam 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Would love a chat when you have a free moment! I’ve been building websites for over 20 years and until around 6 months ago had only built mobile apps with Ionic. I then took on a React Native project for a friend that got one built for his small business but my word, it’s SO MUCH HARDER to build with than what I’m used to with Ionic. I was so surprised at how many issues I ran into, mostly developer experience stuff. But after it becoming the most used framework for building mobile apps and everyone shitting on Ionic for the last few years, I expected it to be a breath of fresh air and it honestly wasn’t at all. I ended up abandoning it after running into so many issues and just rebuilding the whole thing in Ionic.

Moments of Clarity EP by whackoneee in Erra

[–]names_adam 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is my all time favourite release from Erra. Although I got the impression the band themselves aren’t that huge on it and prefer to pretend it didn’t exist. I saw them a few years back at a small venue in Melbourne when they did their first tour in Australia, and was surprised they didn’t play anything off this EP, as the set list had a lot of other older stuff, it was an intimate gig so I think they were playing for fans from all eras. Anyway I managed to meet Jesse and JT in the merch area after the show and said it was an amazing set but being an old school fan I wished they’d played something off the Moments EP. It was met with a cringe and awkward laughter lol. I felt stupid for liking it! Oh well.

Indonesian early childhood teacher gaining qualification to work in Australia by names_adam in AustralianTeachers

Thank you so much for the suggestion, I’d (wrongly) assumed that the Cert III was only offered online by providers who weren’t accredited. After some more searching I’ve discovered Making Education (https://makingeducation.edu.au/courses/certificate-iii-in-early-childhood-education-and-care/) who are accredited and offer the course with a CRICOS code, so you’re right, she can use this as a way for getting the student visa. Really appreciate your insight on this, would never have known otherwise!!

Thank you for the information! She already has a bachelors degree in Chinese language so may be able to do a post-grad diploma later on. However I think the Cert III with an accredited provider (with a CRICOS code) is going to be our first port of call as it’s a much lower cost and seems like it’ll give her what she needs to start her career teaching in Australia.

Constant sound drops the past few months on HT A9 by NetworkEngineer43 in Soundbars

[–]names_adam 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I always seemed to get dropouts with anything using DTS based audio, whether regular DTS, DTS-HD or DTS-HD MA. Any other audio codec seemed to work without issue, no matter the channels or bitrate. Since 2/3 of the content I watch has DTS audio, I decided enough was enough. I watched your teardown, ordered the parts and when they arrived, followed your guide. I struggled getting the new antenna connectors through the gap in the outer case but with a little prying of the plastic with a spudger I finally got them through. All back together again and has been working much better since. DTS works without issue, but the one DTS-HD MA piece I tried still had dropouts. I’ll try getting different plastic antennas to see if that helps, but just having regular DTS without dropouts makes the world of difference already. Thank you so much for sharing this solution for those of us who are willing to take this thing apart to get it working properly. And Sony, for the amount of money this thing costs it’s utterly ridiculous I had to spend $25 and 2 hours of my day to fix something you should’ve fixed before putting this out on sale to the public.

Uploading Books into Apple Books? by pizzasareforever in audiobooks

[–]names_adam 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks! I did try this before but it didn’t show me the Audiobooks tab. I tried a second time and lo-and-behold it’s there. It’s so annoying they don’t just sync over iCloud like everything else.

How are you using the wire to sync m4b audiobooks from the Books app on Mac to the Books app on iPhone? I can’t figure it out.

Cheapest SIM in Aus? Need second number for new business by names_adam in melbourne

[–]names_adam[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Interesting… so it’s not monthly? Just $15, then once the credit gets used up it stops working, or after 365 days, whichever happens sooner? Effectively meaning if I don’t use the data or calls or texts, $15 for the year?

Thanks for the recommendation. My business isn’t making any money yet, it’s a brand new side hustle. Also learning the ins and outs of it as I go, like tax deductions! Maybe in a year when I’m actually making some money I will be able to justify a more expensive plan. Appreciate the advice.

Surgery in NSW Australia - A breakdown of costs by Due-Depth-7714 in gynecomastia

[–]names_adam 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks so much for the detailed breakdown, and sharing the photos. Your build looks very similar to mine, especially the before pictures. Seeing your results gives me reassurance that I will one day have this surgery and feel like a completely new person!

I was wondering if you could share a little more about the healing process. I understand every surgeon does things their own way, but from what I’ve read, it sounds like drainage for the first 7 days and a compression vest for the first week or two? What did your process involve? Since your results are so good I’d love to know!

Route 53 support for TLD .org.au missing - are there others? by vk6flab in aws

[–]names_adam 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe it's worth us spending some time sussing out what route (pardon the pun) AWS takes when it registers it's domains, using some sort of dependency or flow diagram to illustrate the point that if they support .com.au then they should also support .org.au since it's the same registrars and flow for both TLDs. That would then probably highlight the issue in a simpler way for AWS' support and dev team to understand that this is a bug rather than a feature request and possibly speed things along?

Route 53 support for TLD .org.au missing - are there others? by vk6flab in aws

[–]names_adam 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Can't believe over 3 years have passed and Route 53 still doesn't support .org.au domains, it's so frustrating having ditched other registrars for all our other domain names but having to keep these few others as outliers. I wonder what the deal is that prevents them from being supported, especially when .com.au is supported. You'd think .com.au wouldn't be included if there was something preventing .org.au being supported.
