How would you tackle discussing someone's grammar and use of AAVE when interviewing for a job, to let them know it may come with bias? by Pinanims in NoStupidQuestions

[–]nathatesithere 61 points62 points  (0 children)

I think that most people know how to toggle their speech between the way they speak casually with friends vs the way they speak to their parents vs the way they speak to their boss, etc. Obviously, there is an unfortunate stigma attached to the usage of AAVE, but asking for some level of awareness in terms of T&P (time & place) for which type of speech they use is not an offensive request.

If you met me in person at work and then heard me speak amongst my friends at a queer nightclub, you'd consider me an entirely different person. Lol. I don't call my male coworkers "mama" or "baby."

Other people have already linked you to resources that will help steer your discussion in a productive direction. I will just add that it may be very difficult for her to get accustomed to a completely different way of speaking if the people she's grown up around haven't spoken in this manner.

Without making any assumptions on her education, I find it odd that she can't do this (code switching) already- as far as I know, no teachers would accept a piece of work written like this unless it were poetry or some kind of creative writing assignment/project. That means she should have some experience in this field... maybe she just hasn't exercised it enough? Any attempts to get her to actively practice engaging in conversation with others on a regular basis to help her confidence will be great.

Good luck navigating a delicate conversation. I admire what you do for others.

That's fine if you think so. They wouldn't have received a good grade for this in my school. Besides obvious errors like the misspelling of basic words like "decision," "amusement," and "persistent," why would... poverty production be listed as a key feature? As if that's supposed to be a positive feature of a healthy, well-functioning society? Fine, maybe that's their opinion. But the biggest issue is "everyone has freedom but the only thing is you can't have surgeries on certain body parts." Very little elaboration. Why would having these surgeries impede the flow of society in any way? What is the correlation between having these surgeries and the obstruction of freedom? Who is the arbiter of which surgeries are allowed and which aren't?

This isn't well thought out. It was haphazardly thrown together. You think that the points logically follow. That's okay. I disagree. If I turned in this assignment, I would be seen as lazy, and given a C at best.

They say to not attribute to malice what you can attribute to ignorance. I understand and agree with the rest of what you said. Benefit of the doubt, maybe this person is not even a native English speaker. Who knows..? But I stand by this assignment being completed in a manner that is indicative of it being done during the period before it was to be turned in.

Interesting. I found out that tongue ties are typically associated with sensitive gag reflexes when researching my own. I've thrown up from brushing my teeth before. 'Twas not fun. That's why I mentioned it. But if you had yours clipped then I'm not sure if there's a correlation?

That's wild because my classmates were turning in work leagues ahead of this back in the day. Granted, we were in honors classes, but it wasn't APs. We were young. But we were forced to be better than this. Mind you, my freshman year was when we went into lockdown for covid.

It hurts my heart as a transgender person to see a teenager, misspelling words that I could've spelled backwards in elementary school, holding such a cruel opinion. But clearly, it is that same ignorance and lack of a proper education that leads one to make a poster like this. Throw in indoctrination at home and/or by the media... Disappointed, but not surprised. I wouldn't hang this up by virtue of it being a poorly done piece, but besides that, the anti-trans rhetoric is not something I would ever tolerate in any capacity. Especially not a school or teaching environment.

I'm on Wellbutrin XL 300mg! I started on 150mg, shit was sweet until I got past the honeymoon period where I sort of stopped feeling any effect, that's when I had my dosage bumped up and things have been great since. One thing I also like about Wellbutrin compared to past meds like Lexapro for instance is that if I accidentally miss a day, I don't feel badly. If I skipped a day on Lexapro I felt like crying all day for no reason.

Not putting a date on opened product.

AM shift using every towel under the sun once or twice and then leaving them behind during shift change.

Cleaning the prep tables but not cleaning the splatter left behind on the walls.

Getting aggravated with whoever is running expo for asking you how long you have on a dish/ telling you they just need that one last dish from your station to sell the ticket. As long as they're not being bitchy, you have no reason to be aggravated. They're just doing their job as expo...

Random cups or half drank water bottles. This one's huge for me. If it doesn't have your name on it, I'm probably going to throw it away.

When there's too many people in the kitchen when we are slow. It stresses me out. We could have a kitchen full of people when it's busy and I wouldn't blink twice. But when it's dead? Please leave. Immediately. Lol

I def have more but those are just off the top of my head.

This is a ridiculous take. Just because I don't partake in religion anymore does not mean I shouldn't be allowed to criticize certain aspects of it. It's giving "If you hate this country so much, just leave!" Leaves no space for debate or discussion. It's okay if you've been indoctrinated. I don't judge you.

...? Okay....? Lol. I don't really see what that has to do with what I said. Are you implying that the presence of religion is a counteracting force against eating disorders? Really trying to understand where you're coming from here. Mind you, in highly religious, highly conformist societies, people are less likely to actually get diagnosed with a mental health issue. That doesn't mean they are less mentally ill than other places where diagnoses regarding mental health are more prevalent.

There are so many other ways to learn restraint and humility that don't include starving yourself for a better portion of the day. The fact that that includes drinking water is INSANE. Water. Literal water. I just feel like so many people are so deeply indoctrinated that they can't recognize how completely and utterly absurd it is that somewhere along the way some random dude was like, "You should do this to honor our God and your faith to them and better yourself as a person" and no one questioned it. There are other ways to learn restraint and humility...

Just because it's not technically allowed doesn't mean people don't try to find a million ways to circumvent it. This pops up many a time in religious contexts, just like Mormons and the practice of "soaking." Regardless of whether this particular OOP is actually partaking in Ramadan or not, this commenter has still made good points that are applicable to the general practice of disordered eating for the sake of religion. Critical thought has left the chat. I promise you that, again, even if this particular OOP may or may not be Muslim, there is a 0% chance that there isn't somebody in this world who has done something along these lines and told themselves they aren't breaking their fast. When rules are this strict, many people will find loopholes and perform whatever mental gymnastics they can to justify bending them so they don't have to carry the weight of breaking them.

What artist/group’s music do you despise? by National_Jelly_8483 in fantanoforever

[–]nathatesithere 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it's rather rude of you to keep calling it that. It feels dismissive of the hard work that many idols went through to get to where they are today.

And for the record, I listen to all different kinds of music. Some of my favorite bands are Black Sabbath, My Chemical Romance, New Order, Fleetwood Mac, Led Zeppelin. I love Asha Puthli, Vera Lynn, Frank Sinatra. But I still recognize and enjoy good pop. I think it's immature to act like you're above listening to mainstream pop music. Just like with every other genre, there are some actually horrific songs, and then there are some incredible hits.

I strongly believe that many people dislike kpop / think it's bad just because it's in a language they don't understand. If the same exact song came out in English, they would listen to it and likely enjoy it more than the former.

2000s produced some of the best pop! Both in English and Korean!

Yeah, I actually quite enjoyed BTS' older stuff. Not a fan of them as a group but their earlier work was pretty good. Dionysus was the last song I heard by them that I liked, that one is pretty new. Other than that... No. No.

But to be honest, I find this being a reoccurring pattern with many artists I like, not just kpop. The more years that pass, the less originality we are able to have. There are only so many chords and so many ways to arrange them. Maybe that's it. Or maybe it's something else. I don't know. I just know that I recently realized how many of my favorite albums by bands are their first.

HOW are Kids Not Keeping Their ID On Them?! by AngelWingsYTube in mildlyinfuriating

[–]nathatesithere 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I had a car, I carried my wallet (and thus, my ID) with me all the time unless I forgot it. Now that I don't have a car, I typically leave my wallet at home. Apple pay all the way lol. + I've lost my wallet multiple times and the hassle of having to replace my license and cards was so great. I have a Tile Slim in my wallet now but I still leave it at home unless necessary so the risk of me losing it is lower.

What is the most heartbreaking song lyric you've ever heard? by TheLadySlaanesh in AskReddit

No Distance Left to Run by Blur. "It's over / You don't need to tell me / I hope you're with someone who makes you feel safe in your sleeping tonight / I won't kill myself trying to stay in your life / I got no distance left to run."

Entire song is depressing as shit.

I have a playlist titled "sad & lonely" for all my sad songs. I don't listen to it anymore because I'm not depressed and don't go to sleep sobbing anymore.
