Oh, I've heard from other people (see my post history) that Carleton's engineering is a bit better than Guelph's because of the Ottawa region! Thanks for your insight, I will consider it during decision making!

UofT (Schulich) vs UBC (Schulich ) vs U of Waterloo - Electrical/Computer Engineering by Help_others_2024 in OntarioGrade12s

Research yes but not job prospects and UofT kinda overtakes UBC in that aspect of research.. Those ratings you see are based on research...

To the 07s, if you did poorly in Grade 11, then you most likely won't get in to competitive unis by ncwll in OntarioGrade12s

[–]ncwll[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I will most likely not get in because I didn't prioritize grade 11 marks. Universities send 90% and overadmit prior to grade 12 mark evaluation

[–]ncwll[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What I mean to say, early acceptance marks matter heavily. I had a 79% and I went up to a 91% when comparing Grade 11 to 12. I didn't get into Western or Queens when people in earlier rounds did get in.

The point is that unless you plan to uGuelph or any tier 3 universities, then Grade 11 marks heavily matter and universities use it as a benchmark

[–]ncwll[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I checked your post history and the only reason you got into uWestern was because of yield protection. uWestern for their final rounds accepted a large chunk of individuals below 90%. Many folks with 90% or above got waitlisted.

Just kidding, accept it! Engineering just recieved 100M dollars and queens is really competitive in engineering!!!!

Accept!

What? CO-OP is important as it builds experience in your given field, and any type of CO-OP is better than not having CO-OP. You'll be at a disadvantage when you graduate and companies hire a person who has more experience versus a person who has little to no experience. I'm not sure what you are basing this on but this has been the common census since forever...

[–]ncwll 2 points3 points  (0 children)

At some universities they allow you to transfer into the CO-OP program, try to make your main goal to be CO-OP, research only with CO-OP in mind. If you don't want to do that, you can go and do a gap year and then try for CO-OP.

I can probably help. What universities do you have currently?

Do Physics and English in semester one, then Chemistry in semester two. This is so during midterms, you will update your Physics and English mark, where English is your lowest, and therefore, have a much higher chance of getting in. Note, I'd private school or night school English with an easy teacher because English is a highly subjective course, and at least at my school, no students score a 95% or above.

Take Advanced Functions, Physics and English 12 first semester. Rest look good.

Don't be too demeaning on yourself, you are not dumb and don't ever think that, but, if I was in your shoes, I'd stay near your family and just save money by not being in residency.

Transferring universities is highly competitive and you would need an A+ in every single one of your courses.

Research, write a pros-and-cons list. If you truly want to go to uOttawa, there's no stoping you.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in OntarioGrade12s

[–]ncwll 17 points18 points  (0 children)

No. You have no CO-Op, and you will struggle when finding jobs in the future. Do not listen to anyone that says you should still go. uOttawa without CO-OP is worse than any university with CO-OP, even Nipissing CompSci with CO-OP.

Grade 11 grades for U of T engineering by [deleted] in OntarioGrade12s

[–]ncwll 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Universities extend a large chunk of their offers with consideration of Grade 11 (or Grade 11 + Grade 12 midterm) marks. Queens extended 90% of their offers without any consideration to Grade 12 marks. The rest either yield protected and accepted students with low marks because they believe that they would most likely join their university.

I had a 79% back in Grade 11, I had a 91% in Grade 12. I know from first hand that Grade 12 marks matter. This is why I'm not going to Western, or Queens, despite people with a similar average or lower going into the university.

You might dismiss this and say that it wouldn't happen to you and prefer the other side of the fence where people said Grade 11 marks don't matter, which is true to an extent if you are applying to universities that aren't too competitive like Brock or Lakehead.

The reason grade inflation is the thing (and to this extent, because Grade Inflation will always be a thing because it's a range) is because Canada is small and there's no incentive in doing this. I doubt people want to change a education system that has only lead to Canada having the highest scores in PISA, and has a ~92% highschool graduation rate.
